As we're having a beer in the little town of Werfen (staying overnight to do the Ice Caves in the morning) the street was closed off around us and then the band came in.... everything except a drum kit - they'd forgot it!

After about half an hour they we're ready (and glad they waited for the drummer - he took the show away). This 6 piece played a fantastic and boogie worthy mix of German/Austrian Jazz and English tunes. Many a white beers were had and a great time was had by all. Thanks Austria!

It’s always incredibly fun looking back over the whole year in music and piecing together the best parts like a jigsaw. This is the sixth instalment in my year end “Best Songs of 20XX” DJ mixes and it was incredibly hard to pick the songs that would fit into just one hour. That’s why there’s 52 of them, and it goes from 120 beats per minute all the way up to a blistering 174bpm.

There was a huge return of 90s influences in 2023, epitomised by Calvin Harris’ “Miracle” replete with echoing piano runs and soaring, pitched up vocals. Rave and Drum & Bass also had strong resurgences, ratcheting up the bpms and breaking through into pop with tunes like Charlotte Haining and goddard.’s “High Hopes”.

For me personally, I got to have a lot of fun DJing at some of the biggest events of my life, from the back of a float in the World Pride Mardi Gras in Sydney (a combined audience of 100,000!), to a basement in London, the middle of the Tasmanian bush, and Canva celebrations in Manila and Austin. It’s always the biggest thrill playing both new and unexpectedly retro tunes to crowds who are up for a good time, and you were all great crowds 🥳

So take a listen to the mix, and I hope it serves as a great hallmark of the year that was 2023 and all the good memories you’ve had wherever you went.

The Best Of 2023 Mix

In Japanese there is a word 幸 (sachi) which translates as good fortune, and happy accidents.

One Friday (early) morning after a night of celebrations with my muse & partner, I decided to press record and have a mix in my lounge. Many DJs will understand what it is to get 'lost in the mix'... everything else disappears; nothing exists apart from that moment you're in and the music that's playing. This was one of those moments for me - there was no real thought as far as what tunes I would play, certainly no planning, and I just got completely sucked into the music. This was the result... 

A real eclectic bunch of tunes in here, from big bass lines with broken beats, to groovy minimal rollers, and everything in between... 

Recorded using 3x XDJ1000s, X:ONE 92 mixer & a Strymon Volante pedal.
