Tyler Bain is a Narrm-based filmmaker and sound designer focused on telling stories that are equal parts silly and serious, primarily through the manipulation of archival footage and field recordings. His screen and sound works have been exhibited across Australia and internationally, including
at New York’s Stony Brook Film Festival and Sydney Film Festival. He does basically whatever.

Primarily recorded at Fitzroy’s Expresso Car Wash, ‘Deluxe Wash’ is an attempt to explore the seemingly mundane. It is structured around an automatic car wash cycle and the subsequent emotional and nostalgic response that the cycle elicits. Through narration and the manipulation of field recordings and samples, the car wash is utilised as a vessel through which I investigate my relationship with sound, as well as my personal
experience living with obsessive compulsive disorder - in particular my daily compulsive hand washing. Additionally, the piece attempts to subvert the traditionally dour world of sound art with a slightly comedic approach.
An ode to the transportive effects of listening, ‘Deluxe Wash’ is best experienced in the dark.

We are crushed by the terrible news of Sean's passing. The Melbourne (and all over) experimental / improvised / noise scene took a huge blow just a few days before the start of the confinement, with the passing of legendary drummer, noise artist, curator, DIY stalwart, lover and enthusiast for all things strange, fukkd and brutal Sean Baxter.
I made a radio show of his music, with a few anecdotes, stories and quotes thrown in. If anyone is involved in radio, online or otherwise, and wants to get it aired please feel free to download to get the files.

I am a sound recordist/artist/designer currently producing audio-montages and compositions that explore the intersection of architecture, psychoacoustics, social-dynamics and place. My works are constructed primarily from un-mixed and un-edited environmental sound recordings, which I capture using a mixture of straight, extended and oblique recording techniques – probing the various unheard material realities, angles and perspectives of a given sound event, as well as providing a tactile space that has surface, texture and reflection, whereby the listener is sensitised to hearing as if it were touch. Through employing a technologically limited (recording focused) work methodology, I am driven to find inventive recording techniques that re-contextualise my surroundings as well as inspire fresh and idiosyncratic compositional approaches pertinent to the places, situations and events I encounter.
