In 1999, archaeologists excavating the temple of Tlatelolco discovered the skeleton of a 20-year-old sacrificial victim who was clutching two skull-shaped figurines. Historians initially thought the clay sculptures were mere toys and they were catalogued and stored in a museum warehouse. It was not until years later that someone decided to blow into the clay device. The haunting, screaming sound that emerged from the whistle has redefined our understanding of pre-Hispanic instruments and rituals.

Some scholars believe that the skull-shaped whistles found in Tlatelolco were used to recreate the screech of howling wind, because they were found in a temple dedicated to the wind god Ehecatl. The instruments are known as “whistles of death” because historians believe they were used to help guide sacrificial victims on their journey to the afterlife.

My Favourite Friends Podcast #31 Pazkal

A small collection of music produced by or in association with Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples. Lew and myself put this mix together in mid 2015 for our radio show on the community broadcaster 3RRR 102.7fm. 

We're hardly in a position to make commentary on the vastly diverse musical cultures that exist across the cities, towns and communities in Australia, but this seemed like a simple way to provide an alternative to the JJJ countdown. We encourage you to have a look and listen for yourself - you'll fine everything from desert reggae to 90s house, and stomping rock. 

Thanks and gratitude to all the musicians involved in these projects, both living and deceased; to C.A.A.M.A. for releasing almost half the songs on this mix, Incite Youth Arts (http://redsandculture.com/) for their excellent compilations, and resources like IndigiTube (http://www.indigitube.com.au/) for a chance to hear these fantastic artists. Thanks to Peter Mumme for providing a deeper understanding of the Waak Waak Jungi project (for which there is a reissue in development). 

The refusal to celebrate Australia Day is part of an ongoing fight for the recognition of first nations people's rights. If nothing else, we hope this mix can serves as an alternative soundtrack for a weekend that otherwise resounds with a the cannons, fireworks and bells of Australia's colonial history. If you are able bodied and free, I encourage you to attend one of the many rallys that will be taking place on the 26th January.

What a crazy year 2020 has been. We took for granted our right to move and dance without restrictions and this year has been a reminder of how everything in the universe is so fragile. We've decided to start the new year with a special set and share a fresh wind of hope with a strong scent of freedom in order to remind us all, how our life should look like and how we should live on planet Earth. FunKamel are Moti Landesman & Neria Orbach. The two mix a wide selection of ethnic music flavours, with a strong middle-eastern influence, often layered over electronic music styles. FunKamel was formed in the underground scenes of Tel-Aviv, and later have also stepped out to perform in many of the freshest clubs and festivals that Israel and the world has to offer.

Rising from the land of muses, Anatolia; Mousikē started as a Soundcloud page & private parties in Istanbul. Now it turned into a series of musical gatherings all around the world, which ended up as a vibrant community with a great variety of colours and tastes.
