Rarely does an artist pay homage to the classics like Dimitri From Paris. The Grammy nominated producer, remixer, composer and DJ has made every one of his repertoire of reworks sound effortless; no mean feat when the original tracks are by the likes of Disco’s greatest musicians. He has a long history of remixing classic records, starting in the late 80s and culminating in this achievement of a lifetime, ‘Dimitri From Paris presents Le CHIC Remix’.

This 20-track album features three brand new remixes alongside the much-loved essentials all brilliantly remastered for 2018, tracks that have resonated with artists from Frankie Knuckles to Disclosure, Gilles Peterson to Mark Ronson. Alongside the remixes are instrumentals of each (four of which are previously unreleased), for the ultimate bumper pack. For this project Dimitri was entrusted to use the original studio masters from circa 1978 - 1980 that feature all of the individually recorded musical and vocal elements. The songs have been respectfully remastered, unveiling never-before-heard performances, turning the spotlight on the beautiful orchestrations of one the most unique and highly-revered production duos of the Disco era and beyond; Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards, along with their CHIC Organization of musicians.

Kicking off with the unmistakeable CHIC staple ‘Le Freak’, Dimitri’s timeless remix making the exquisite instrumental harmonies shine like only Dimitri can, the album delves next into ‘Lost In Music’ and CHIC’s classic ‘I Want Your Love’. Norma Jean Wright’s life-affirming ‘Saturday’, written by CHIC along with Robert L Cotter in 1978, has been remixed by Dimitri to cinematic proportions, the climax of many of his DJ sets. Sister Sledge’s ‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’ is given the Dimitri treatment with a new extended mix, drawing out the string motifs, showcasing unheard sections from the original master tapes, sounding better than ever. Further exclusives include ‘My Forbidden Lover’ and another Sister Sledge masterpiece, ‘Got To Love Somebody’ with cowbell and horns resplendent. More highlights include a new remaster of Sister Sledge’s evergreen ‘Thinking Of You’ and the final track, an underdog from French chanson singer turned one-time Disco act, Sheila & B. Devotion ‘Your Love Is Good’, a euphoric high to close on and another track using elements from never-heard-before recorded outtakes.

Through Disco grooves and meticulously reverent production, ‘Dimitri From Paris presents Le CHIC Remix’ gets to the heart of why CHIC’s music remains so universally relevant, underlining the enduring cultural significance of dance music in its most unabashed form. This album is a demonstration of how captivating the sound of a full orchestra of musicians can be, compared to today’s largely computer generated offerings, celebrating the eternally endearing qualities of some of CHIC’s best-selling productions, not to mention, for over 40 years, the unquestionable power of a great Disco record.

The release last autumn of Reel People’s first full studio album in 10 years was, it’s fair to say, a moment. Retroflection stylishly recreated soul, disco and boogie classics behind the collective’s formation nearly 20 years ago and exposed its rarefied DNA like never before. Now band leader Oli Lazarus widens the collective, inviting the world’s finest producers and remixers to add their funky splices to the Retroflection blueprint. Retroflection Remixed, featuring Mousse T., Osunlade, DJ Spinna, John Morales, Atjazz, Terry Hunter, Sebb Junior, Scott Diaz, Da Brownie, Tall Black Guy, Matt Cooper’s OUTSIDE, BusCrates and Art Of Tones, is a majestic rebooting of the soulful flow that swept us away in 2018.
	
Art Of Tones get’s his sparkly mitts on Don’t Stop The Music, swaggering synth ‘n’ bass riffs further underlining Angie Stone’s classy strut through Yarbrough & People’s 1980 hit, whilst Buscrates – true to the name of his remix – pumps irresistible funk bounce into I’m In Love, a truly lowdown re-skinning of Reel People’s Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King tribute where Navasha Daya’s vocal sounds sassier than ever.

Osunlade eases us in with an elegant re-interpretation of Reel People’s Pleasure cover Joyous, deep throbs of electronica and rippling percussion carrying loops of the vocal and that iconic sax solo to stunning new heights – or depths. Similarly, Atjazz dims the lights and intensifies the mood for his take on Twilight. Where Reel People played impressively close to Maze’s original, Atjazz treads to shuffling jazz drums, double-bass and piano. The build of parts is spine-tingling stuff. Matt Cooper and his outstanding OUTSIDE project also take on the mantle of Joyous, and serve us a full fat disco jazz funk odyssey.

There are a number of uptempo treats too. Take Sebb Junior’s snappy piano-house routine for the Mica Paris-fronted I Want To Thank You – a sparkling turbo-charge to Alicia Myers’ early Eighties gospel-R&B vibe – or NYC mix legend John Morales’ ecstatic nine-minute mirrorball twirl of Geraldine Hunt-anthem Can’t Fake The Feeling complete with epic drum and vocal (Daya once again) breakdowns. Respected UK house DJ-producer Scott Diaz gives the Sharlene Hector-led cover of Side Effect’s Always There greater guitar-licked urgency but without compromise to the song’s soulful poise and power, and revered Chicago veteran Terry Hunter is a match made in heaven for Tony Momrelle, who soars through the former’s soulfully-charged remix of Buttercup (Carl Anderson’s mid-Eighties, Stevie Wonder-penned gem) with all of its funky drums, b-line twists and warm musical arrangements. German maestro Mousse T. hands us a nostalgic rework of Teena Marie’s I Need Your Lovin’  featuring the female powerhouses Vulu Malinga, LaDonna Harley-Peters and Sharlene Hector.

Elsewhere, South African talent Da Brownie dresses Reel People’s peppy, Omar-fronted update of Skipworth & Turner treasure Thinking About Your Love in sharp, finely-detailed deep dance threads, and Detroit star Tall Black Guy (TBG) sprinkles considerable amounts of summer samba magic over Momrelle’s other Retroflection outing Can We Pretend - a stunning re-awakening of the Bill Withers and Jose Feliciano collabo for the second time in mere months. There’s room yet for DJ Spinna to expand the reaches of Keep It Up (Anthony David’s luscious rendition of Milton Wright’s deep-soul bomb) with another of his transcendental space-funk remixes. Mind-blowing.

After his last release on Dirt Crew in 2017 we are more than delighted to bring back the talented Harry Wolfman. With impressive records on labels like Phonica, Omena, Outplay and Toy Tonics in the last years he has drawn up a fine new selection of music that spans across many genres and moods. This is also the first release for us in the new year after a lil break and it continues to explore the more eclectic approach we are following for a while now since the outings of artists like Dampé, S3A and Dan Only.

Harry presents an exciting opener for his new EP, together with vocalist Christian Crow he has made the blissful and breaks laden “poppy” good feel tune “A Way You Come Home to Me” that shines a bright light in these darker months. Followed by the deeper club tune “Step by Step”, building around yet another vocal recording. This time it’s Harry sampling his own voice and looping it into a repetitive piece of good feel House music.

We are getting deeper on the B side with “Speaking Raman”, one of these signature Harry tunes, a playful dusty lo-fi piece of music build around a piano theme and embedded in deep bass and driving beats, his sound trademark on all of these more floor orientated tracks on the EP. To close out the record we added two of his cinematic, ambient electronica works that we personally love so much. The haunting “Always 3” is a deep sphere that sucks you in a meditational and soothing womb of sounds. Ending with the electroid cut “Green Trees”, it’s broken and fragile and gives this indie-tronica track a warm and gentle touch.

We hope you enjoy these tunes and that they may be your soundtrack to the upcoming warmer months.
