At just 21 years of age, Icelandic singer-songwriter Ásgeir is a sensation in his domestic music scene with almost 10% of the Icelandic population now owning his debut album, Dyrd í dauðathogn – the biggest and fastest-selling debut by a home grown artist.

May 2013 saw Ásgeir’s first exposure to UK audiences in support to John Grant - who was also responsible for the English translations of In The Silence and was followed by extensive European dates with fellow countrymen Of Monsters & Men, including a mesmerising appearance at London’s Somerset House. 
 
With his deft combination of electronic & organic instrumentation, Ásgeir’s vibrant, airy songs - inset with his distinctive melancholic voice have widespread appeal.

At the start of 2013 the success of Dyrd í dauðathogn was recognised with no less than four Iceland Music Awards and a nomination for the prestigious Nordic Music Prize. Ásgeir appeared at Sonar Reykjavik and by:Larm festivals early in the year before making his US debut in March, including two SXSW shows.

In the years following World War Two, Japan developed one of the most insatiable, dynamic and diverse markets for jazz. For a crucial period of little over a decade – from the late 1960s to the early 1980s – Japanese jazz culture progressed at an astonishing rate, producing an extraordinary array of artists, recordings and record labels that created some of the most forward thinking and impressive jazz to be committed to tape. This amazing journey is explored on ‘J Jazz’.
This compilation from BBE uncovers some of the most sought after and rare material from this period and pulls together key artists who shaped the post-war modern jazz scene in Japan.

‘J Jazz’ includes obscure and sought after rarities like the bass-driven power jazz of Koichi Matsukaze’s ‘Earth Mother’, the holy grail rarity of Aizawa Tohru Quartet’s ‘Dead Letter’ and the loping majesty of Takeo Moriyama’s ‘North Wind’. This collection takes the listener into deep spiritual jazz, post-modal impressionism and fierce dance-floor fusion with material from artists and composers whose names are generally only known to committed collectors of Japanese jazz. Fumio Karashima, Mitsuaki Katayama, Takeo Moriyama and Kiyoshi Sugimoto are among the names featured on an album aiming to shed a little light on the shadowy world of Japanese jazz clubs, tucked away in the neon backstreets. This music demands a wider audience and BBE are excited to deliver a landmark compilation, lifting the veil on this wonderful and mysterious area of the global jazz catalogue.

None of the tracks featured on ‘J Jazz’ have ever received an official release outside Japan before. The albums the tracks are taken from are extremely hard to find and often fetch huge sums on the collector’s circuit. Originally pressed in small numbers on independent and private labels such as Union, Johnny’s Disk, Whynot, ALM and VAP, these tracks are now available for everyone to enjoy.

Compiled by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, both long-time collectors of Japanese jazz, ’J Jazz’ brings together the very best in modern jazz from Japan, recorded during a critical period of musical and cultural transition that saw composers and musicians not only assert a new artistic identity but also create a lasting musical legacy.

Eiji Nakayama – Aya’s Samba

In partnership with the French National Audiovisual Institute (Ina), FUNK IN FRANCE: From Paris to Antibes (1969-1970) is the first official, previously unissued live recordings of legendary guitarist Grant Green in over a decade. This deluxe 2CD & 3LP set brings together a collection of recordings of Green captured at the ORTF studios in Paris on October 26, 1969 with bassist Larry Ridley and drummer Don Lamond, also including jazz guitar legend Barney Kessel comping behind Green on the beautiful “I Wish You Love;” plus full concert recordings from June 18 and 20, 1970 at the Antibes Jazz Festival featuring saxophonist Claude Bartee and organist Clarence Palmer, who both played on Green’s classic 1969 Blue Note album Carryin’ On, and drummer Billy Wilson. The ORTF studio session was taped for a radio broadcast produced by legendary French producer André Francis, and the Antibes recording was taped less than a month before Green’s first live release Alive! on Blue Note Records. Both performances showcase Green’s early transition to a heavier, funkier sound as he entered the 1970s. This is the first time any of these songs from the Carryin’ On and Iron City albums are being made available as live performances and represent his earliest live recording as a leader. The 48-page booklet for Funk in France includes essays by the renowned Blue Note Records discographer, writer and executive producer of this album Michael Cuscuna, along with producer Zev Feldman of Resonance and Pascal Rozat of Ina; interviews with Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno, the legendary organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, Grant Green’s eldest son Greg Green (aka Grant Green Jr.) and the organist from the Antibes concerts, Clarence Palmer; plus memorabilia and previously unpublished photos by French photographers Christian Rose and Jean-Pierre Leloir taken at the ORTF studio 104 and Antibes Jazz Festival, as well as jazz photography icon Chuck Stewart.
