About Quixosis
Born in Quito, Ecuador, Daniel Lofredo Rota comes from a lineage of
migrants which through various routes ended up settling in Ecuador. He
is a sonic explorer by nature and his musical practice centres around
exploring peripheral territories and interlinking them with global currents, methods, and possibilities. He is the producer of Quixosis, and also the manages También, and ambient label focused on bringing experimental ambient music from Latin America to a global audience. He is also the curator and lead investigator of the upcoming CAIFE records Reissue series which will be published on Honest Jon’s records in 2021, which focuses on a catalog of lost ecuadorian music on analog tapes, that were found by him in 2013.

Currently located out of the heart of the Caribbean coast of Colombia Jimena Angel blends a wonderful mix of Afro-Latin and electronic sounds with Disco and House to Champeta, Afro-Funk, Hi-life & much more including a few of her own songs for good measure.

Jimena Angel's music is impregnated with electronic and Afro-Latin rhythms, is the result of more than 2 decades of musical research, through the different projects she has been part of and her own project as a soloist, with which she was nominated for a Latin Grammy. 

During this time, Jimena has experimented with different musical genres, beginning in the 90's with rock music in her first band "Pepa Fresa", Colombian rhythms with her teachers Teto Ocampo (Mucho Indio) and Iván Benavides, learning from Richard Blair about the electronic fusion in "Sidesteper” and reggae music as the guitarist of Alerta Kamarada. 


These influences and wonderful collaborations result in a tropical and electronic hybrid sound with hypnotic melodies. 
Most recently she has been collaborating with the French record label Elis Records working alongside great musicians and producers such as iZem, Ben Arbarbanel-Wolff, Umoja, Poirier, Nikitch and Joaquín Cornejo, and is set to release her new musical productions in 2022.

In a dystopian cumbiaverse, utilising tropical rhythms as agents of sonic futurity, La Chinaca find an unlikely echo of the past on “Juegos Malosos”, a rendering of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” that simmers, finds communion, then unfurls. It was never meant to last.

If La Chinaca’s debut single, a narcotic reconfiguring of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” as a flickering fever dream, was the hazy release at the end of a long night, then “Sin Titulo”, its follow-up, represents a beginning.
Movement, dance, hedonism are all crucial to the La Chinaca ethos but there’s always something gnawing away at the group, a need to better understand their environment and their sentience, and this seeps whole-heartedly into “Sin Titulo”, as it does the rest of a debut album that is slowly evolving into existence, for “Sin Titulo” marks the birth of the porifera (sea sponge) and with it the beginning of a journey. A droplet, a sphere, a centre without reunion, the porifera is ready to enter the noosfera via the deep blue sea. Its survival is our survival, its tale unravelling our complexities as its conscious awakens.

Agents of sonic futurity, drawing inspiration from Mexico’s infamous guerrilleros liberales (soldiers without uniform), La Chinaca use tropical rhythms to create a dystopian cumbiaverse full of fables guided by the future. Here is its prelude.

The long awaited return of Fedzilla see’s her drop ‘Tiempo’, the lead single from her debut EP ‘Junction’ that draws on Global South roots and silver tongued hip hop to cook up a storm with Latin fire, rich sampling and piercing stories. 
‘Tiempo’ is a new version of a signature track from the group WARA whom Fedzilla co-fronted for almost 5 years - this time reworked with punchy Spanish verses and with a bass-heavy production emphasis with a nod to the dancefloor. It also features Puerto Rican singer Marina y su Melao who brings an ambrosial presence to the time-defying choruses. Produced and co-written by composer and pianist Eliane Correa, the track gains its bouncy touch from co-production by Kensaye who adds a potent flair inspired by global club scenes. 
The song itselves delves into a cosmic probe of space and time. Suspended existences in a world where the hours have run out. Who would you call? The clock melts in your hand, minutes dripping away, drop by drop. Except it’s incredibly catchy.
‘Tiempo’ is an exciting marker for what’s to come in Fedzilla’s upcoming EP ‘Junction’ that dances through upbeat anthems of pulsing rap, Latin-american folk fusion and salsa in a potent testament to her skill as an MC. 

The production and recording of this song have been made possible by the PRS Foundation’s ‘Women Make Music Grant’. 

The creation of the music was supported using public funding by Arts Council England’s ‘Develop Your Creative Practice’ Fund.

Sanctuary Mix #4: Caribombo

One of favourite artists of the new wave of Latin American producer / musicians Lagartijeando aka Mati Zundel drops a very special ‘Huaynos del Ayer’ mix celebrating the wonderful Andean rhythms of Huayno folk music in its variants from Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador. In this mix there are many styles  like huayno-Jiyawa, Kalampeadas, Charangeadas, tunantada, huaylas, serranita, and more

Lagartijeando is synonymous with pushing the Latin contemporary electronic scene forwards along with contemporaries Nicola Cruz & Chancha Via Circuito.  Strongly influenced by his travels through Latin America, his signature psychedelic electronic tracks blend everything from traditional folk from the Bolivian alti-plano to the jungle beats of Brazil.

Keeping with the nostalgic vibes for the lockdown West Coast Mexican Cumbia don Turbo Sonidero digs in his crates for a strictly vinyl selection 'Discos de Mi Padres' in homage to his childhood thinking about family parties and holidays the records that used to get played at these gatherings, Nearly 30 tracks of Cumbia, Mambo, Salsa, Boleros including hits from the legends Beny Moré, Perez Prado, Celia Cruz, Billo's Caracas Boys and Sonora Satanera. 

One half of Kumbia Obscura Turbo Sonidero is music producer hailing from San Jose, CA who blends Rap/Hip-Hop with Mexican Cumbia Sonidera to create a new sound he calls “Tumbia”. In 2010, he moved for a few years to his fathers hometown in Puebla, Mexico to immerse in the Cumbia Sonidera Culture. While in Mexico, he played and toured all over the country.

Sanctuary mix #7: Turbo Sonidero

For our 9th edition of the Sanctuary series we are delighted to welcome the designer of these wonderful Sanctuary images Janiru - also known as DJ Bushbby! 

The mix draws on Dancehall from all over the Caribbean, namely Panama, Martinique, Jamaica… Colombian Champeta and other classics, and of course West African Soukous with some UK productions in there.  The artwork features her own photo of Cartagena, Colombia and a dancing couple from an old Champeta CD from her grandad’s collection.

Bushbby is a London born Colombian DJ who is heavily inspired by the sounds of the Caribbean via the soundsystems she grew up around in both Barranquilla, Colombia and the UK.

What can we say! … For our 10th Sanctuary series we are over the moon to welcome a rare DJ mix from the master Chancha via Circuito not just one of architects of the new Latin American sound but a pioneer and a reference for electronic music worldwide. Emerging as an artist just over a decade ago his foundations are in the new wave of Cumbia that happened around that time. Having hosted him twice as a DJ, we know that he’s got an eye for the dance-floor so it makes total sense that he pays homage to one of his inspirations with this Cumbia Sonidera & Guarachera mix celebrating Mexican sound system culture and beyond.

With that slowed down 'rebajada' sound this one is for the late night head head nod crew, blazing, hypnotic and addictive.

Don Mescal is the co-founder of Cosmovision Records - a new music label and multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary artistic platform out of Montréal, Canada. He is a character full of energy & love, who has a huge repertoire of songs that will catch your senses and awakens your emotions. Inspired by folkloric multiculturalism, he loves to experiment with the traditions of music from around the world and knows how to transfer it into a modern perspective to brew an electronic-music-elixir with that extra drop of mescal flavour. His unique musical voyage combines a well-selected myriad of styles from Folktronica, Rub-a-Dub, Downtempo with a joyfully flamboyant vibe. Traversing through deep huaynos, Colombian-inspired drum pandemonia, hard and soft chichas, this selection reverberates from the mountains of the Mantaro region in the central Andes, the Eden of Peruvian music, where most of these rhythms flooded into the coastal cities, fusing all kinds of styles along its path. The mixtape is dedicated to the legacy of Jose Gabriel Condorcanqui Noguera, Micaela Bastidas Puyucahua and Baltasar Jaime Martinez Compañón.

This is really a special one traversing folkloric roots to fresh contemporary sounds including some of his own productions.

"I decided to do a selection celebrating timely and timeless Colombian productions, including alabaos, currulao, bullerengue, chirimilla, porro, cumbia, champeta, salsa choke, and electronica, featuring national record labels Llorona Records, Palenque Records, Mambo Negro Records, Sonidos Enraizados, Matik Matik Discos, and Juga Music, and a few unreleased Biomigrant tracks and field recordings.  Due to a series of circumstances, this is the longest I've been away from Colombia since I first arrived there, and the selection was a way for me to bridge the distance and warm my Chilean winter."

Featuring sublime cuts from the likes of Frikstailers, Numa Gama, Uji, Tribilin Sound, Tremor and many more, as well as several exclusive tracks from Barda herself. 

Barda is Cecilia Gebhard, music composer and DJ from Buenos Aires, Argentina. In her music she fuses sonic beatmaking with melodies, synthwaves and rhythmic patterns that can be influenced by folklore or world music as well as electronic music. She grew up in the Argentinian Patagonia, surrounded by pumas, foxes, dessert, rivers, lakes and the beauty of the natural world. She is also cites Leda Valladares and Maria Elena Walsh (pictured in the artwork) as huge inspirations and indeed Leda appears in one of the tracks in the mix alongside a stack of unreleased Barda gems.

Xaman X are Bristol’s Tropical Bass all star live act featuring Mexican producer PantherPanther!, Worm Disco Club’s Jackson Lapes on percussion, Andalucian vocalist Marta Zubieta and Peruvian instrumentalist Susana Gutarra. Their  live sets are raucous journeys of high energy dipped in psychedelic flavours and their soon to be released debut EP is no different. In the meantime we got London’s mighty Village Cuts on the remix to bring an extra twist to the track ‘Hoy’ combining that killer Afro-Latin instrumentation with some driving beats and low end frequencies.

Movimientos celebrate their 15 year anniversary with ‘Santuario / Sanctuary’ a compilation of 19 tracks from the UK-Latinx community and beyond. Representative of the new scene of artists taking the UK-Latin sound forward into the 21st Century and at the same time raising much needed funds for the UK Latin American community impacted by COVID-19. It includes 10 exclusive tracks specially commissioned for this project and features a range of styles from mutations of Reggaeton, RnB & Hip Hop alongside acoustic Soul, Cumbia, Jazz, Afro-Latin and future tropical electronic sounds.

The compilation stars long standing members of the scene and part of the Movimientos familia like Wara - who contribute a brand new track (and video) ‘Yo No Me Voy’, The Fontanas who get a Chill Baile remix treatment from London based producer Blue Canariñho, Lokandes who showcase brand new material and producers Soundspecies who team up with Venezuelan vocalist Luzmira Zerpa on a track merging Afro-Cuban percussion with deep electronics. Elsewhere there’s exclusive contributions and brand new tracks from new generation acts including Argentinian-British singer Malena Zavela, Colombian-British producers CXLI (pronounced CALI), songstress JSCA, Bristol based Mexican producer Panther Panther and electro-tropical band Xaman X (remixed by British producers Village Cuts), Downtempo meets Dembow with conscious spoken word from new dynamic combination Bushbby and Swuni. Plus there’s plenty of Cumbia from Imperio Bamba, Malphino, and Manchester’s Mama Racho plus stellar cuts from Esteban Card, Holly Holden y Su Banda, Soul / RnB from Stephanie Santiago and Pao Pestana and Reggaeton - Hip Hop from Mike Kalle x Morfius. The compilation also features specially commissioned artwork from British-Colombian artist and activist Janiru. 

100% of the profits generated from this project will go toward supporting Latin migrant communities in the UK impacted by COVID-19. We will support the following organisations LAWA (Latin American Women’s Aid), LAWRS (Latin American Women’s Right’s Service) and Apoyo Communitario Sur de Londres Covid-19 to ensure money will go to support workers in precarious situations, vulnerable women affected by the rise in domestic violence and more.

With much of the Latin American community here in the UK already in insecure situations, and with the loss of culturally important spaces like Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre, and with the Seven Sisters Latin Village under threat it’s more important than ever to use the power of music and art to fight against injustice & inequality and to help raise up voices of the under represented.

With its origins in the Latin American solidarity movements in the UK and it’s 15 year history of events in the UK Movimientos has always aimed to highlight the issues affecting the continent and the diaspora alongside working with artists, musicians and DJs to use culture as a weapon.
