1) Who are ya/what do you do?
I'm James Shinra and I make various types of electronic music. I've released on Analogical Force, Feel My Bicep, 20/20 Vision, Craigie Knowes, Null + Void.

2) How did you find making the mix/what was the thinking behind it?
I really enjoyed looking back through my old CDs and records to find tracks or albums that really had an impression on me. Most of the music here is from the late 90s/early 2000s - they're my teenage years and at the time I was on a real voyage of musical discovery, taking in loads of different styles, from the Prodigy to Daft Punk, trip hop to trance, speed garage to Detroit techno and electro, then eventually to Warp and Rephlex. Everything was new to me! I think that anything you discover between the ages of about 12 and 20 seems to stick with you the most, probably partly because of the new-ness and partly because of those youthful hormones! So the mix is kind of a mixtape of different artists or tracks I might have been evangelical about at some point in my life! In particular I rediscovered DJ Shadow's early album 'Pre-Emptive Strike' - I'd kind of forgotten how amazing it is, but ended up putting 2 tracks from it on this mix. 'High Noon' in particular is an all time favourite. I've only included one recent track mainly because of time constraints - it's by Cameo Blush. He's really impressed me recently, he is definitely worth watching! I've included some unreleased ambient stuff by me here and there during the mix, see if you can find it :)

3) What’s coming up?
I'm not quite sure, I've got a few things I'm working on and will hopefully sort them out soon. I'm sure I'll appear on Analogical Force again before too long. I've started doing remixes again too after a while turning them down, so there are a couple of nice remixes to look forward to in the coming months.

Im gonna level wit ya… for numerous reasons my life is significantly more busy than when I started Tangled Worlds. As much as loved putting each radio show together, it now proves impossible to find time to record anything, let alone the hours needed to produce the Tangled Worlds the way I was.

Add into the mix Threads Radio’s unexpected notice to vacate their Tottenham studio and subsequent Extended Radio Silence, and we have a big old void being filled with the relentless stream of top notch music that continues to come my way.

As such I have launched the ‘UNINTERRUPTED’ series to get right in about it, and share all these mint tunes whenever I get a chance to record a mix. Recorded live and WITHOUT the usual rambling V/O, these mixes will convey the smoking hot contents of my inbox direct to your ears, as and when possible.
(I promise Tangled Worlds will return proper eventually - hopefully this will keep the keen amongst you supplied with fresh cuts in the meantime.)

The concept for this mix began back in June 2022 when I started taking an interest in the artists that followed me on Soundcloud. One of the first people I checked out was Emanuel; I was really impressed with their track 'May8X' and decided to try and gather enough music to record a mix. It took a bit longer than I anticipated, but the quality of tunes in exceptional and I highly recommend you follow all of the folks involved immediately!

In the end I also included some unreleased tracks passed to me by Robin Wylie, Ninechecker, Scatterbaux, Zodiac Childs, BufoBufo and WILES (they were simply too good not to share). The second album from MOY is a musical evolution, borne of change.

Since his first compilation appearance in 2019, the prolific producer and live performer has released on some of electro’s most revered labels, including Analogical Force, AC Records, Nocta Numerica and Exalt - but this latest record, for his own MOY imprint, amps up the musicality and emotion to create something even deeper.

Moving cities and becoming a parent have imprinted the sound of ‘The Phenomenon Of Memory’. The opener, ‘Sunrise (Live)’, rides a thundering breakbeat, but the plangent acid lines, moody bass undertows and gorgeous piano riffs give it a poignant air. ‘Alpha Decay’ is a slow and low electro cut wreathed in bleeps and soaring string pads, with a monstrous low-end tying it all together, while ‘Echoic Memory’ sounds like a hidden gem of mid ’90s electronica, recalibrated for modern ears, with its mystic synth lines and stately break.

‘Positron Emission’ is huge, a rare instance of the producer in 4/4 techno mode, with a heavily armoured rhythmic undercarriage and sulphuric frequencies powering it along. Then there’s ‘Eternity Well’, which could be his best track so far; the ethereal synths suggest some shoegaze guitar classic, but the beats are pure electro, and when the cascading melody hits midway through, you know you’re in the presence of a future classic. ‘Forest Dungeon’ has a snaking bassline that weaves through the track like an adder through woodland, and ‘The Mist’ is what we need more of: acid drum & bass, filled with metallic fills, speedy 303 burbles and emotive bleeps. The final track, ‘Dusk’, is a reflective ambient closer, a hitherto unheard side of MOY that hints at further evolutions in the near future.

Built of improvisation, experimentation, and most of all, emotion - expect to hear this record resonating from festivals, clubs and home stereos for many years to come.

I have been following LoDubs since I bought my first records on the label in 2009 (DZ & XI - Guns at dawn) - fast forward to 2020, grabbed the Clubroot - Surface Tension vinyl on sight, and messaged Jon Ad the label founder essentially just to praise to presentation of the series. That started a conversation which eventually lead to me remixing 'The Stream' for @silentcubesofficial fantastic new EP!

A veteran producer (Who prefers to separate this incarnation from past works) working within many disciplines in sound, Silent Cubes demonstrates a particular skill in atmospherics and mood in their productions, creating three tracks of original UGK driven sound that speak in a dialect as familiar to the progeny and brethren of Clubroot, Sorrow, and Congi as that of Chez Damier, Mr Fingers, and Ron Trent. An exercise in deepness, Draped in the framework and immediacy of Garage.

Showing how evocatively these elements can be transformed is MOY, himself straddling a line between classic IDM, Old Skool, and Acid, and with releases on Analogical Force, Vinyl Fanatiks (AmenTec) and a slew of others. MOY comes forward with a hybridized remix of “The Stream”, which really is in a class of its own and closes out side B.

There are 3 different drum tracks layered up, the main 808 & two very quiet version with differing amounts of reverb and other spatial stuff.
(I tried to fudge with the 303 way more than I usually would, and ended up with a seriously squidgy twisting terror.)

I spent a long time playing around with different bassline for this track... scrapped them all and eventually ended up with something a lot simpler.

I 'think' this was the first track I recorded with my newly acquired 808 (well Behringer rd-8 to be honest).
