Pendant des décennies, les personnes analphabètes de ma famille se sont enregistrées sur des cassettes afin de communiquer avec leurs proches en France. Ma mère et moi venons de retrouver une K7 audio datant de 2004, glissée dans une enveloppe qui n’a jamais été ouverte. Elle l’écoute pour la première fois, dix-sept ans plus tard. Nous étions persuadées qu’elle contenait un message de ma grand-mère. Mais la cassette renferme en réalité un message de la première femme de mon grand-père, yaye Elisa ou "maman Elisa", aujourd’hui décédée. Ma mère semble bien plus émue que s’il s’agissait de la voix de sa “vraie” maman. Cette découverte surprenante me pousse à échanger avec elle sur la polygamie, mais aussi sur l'importance de l'oralité et de la transmission dans notre famille partagée entre France et Sénégal. Ma mère, comme beaucoup d'immigrés, a mené une double vie entre deux continents. L’écoute de cette cassette réactive une mémoire de l’immigration : une arrivée en France douloureuse et l’amour des siens laissés au pays. (Emilie)

Qui appelle t-on quand on a un souci dans une petite commune rurale de 200 habitants ? Le maire. Et quand le maire est occupé sur son tracteur, on lui laisse un message. Pour dire ses doutes, ses questions, ses angoisses et parfois ses joies. Le soir, Laurent et son épouse Laure, présidente du comité des fêtes, écoutent et commentent ces messages comme des archives vivantes de la vie du village. Un chien qui chasse le gibier, une panne de l'éclairage public, un nouvel arrivant qui demande à ce qu'on lui transporte ses tonnes de livres... Toutes ces petites choses qui font la vie, et qui rendent celles de Laure et Laurent fatigante, palpitante mais surtout essentielle. The reader is Ann Harada.  A boisterous and brilliant student threatens to upend the order of her high school in Shanteka Sigers’ “A Way with Bea,” performed by Pascale Armand.  And a Victorian-era wife fights for her sanity in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s classic “The Yellow Wallpaper,” performed by Carrie Coon.  The show also includes commentary by the Egyptian-American journalist and activist Mona Eltahawy.

Dangerous Women

Dr. Bandy Lee saw it coming – the violence foretold in Donald Trump’s election.  While millions of Americans were still trying to figure out if Trump was just a crude playboy and fast-talking con man she felt a duty to warn the country about dangerous possibilities stemming from a man who lacked the mental fitness to be president. For almost 20 years she had been trying to understand violence. It was her calling. After earning medical and divinity degrees while studying at Yale and Harvard, and a stint at Massachusetts General Hospital, she joined Yale’s faculty to teach in both the school of medicine and the law school. In her clinical practice, she treated inmates in maximum security prisons. And in time she began applying psychiatric concepts to public health and safety. When Trump emerged as a political candidate, everything she had learned from her career in mental health seemed to converge. She began corresponding with kindred spirits and colleagues about how best to make their voices heard. She would become the catalyst of their collaboration, and the editor of the book they produced, titled THE DANGEROUS CASE OF DONALD TRUMP. It appeared just months after Trump’s inauguration and became an instant bestseller, dubbed by The Washington Post as “the most courageous book of the year.” But not without a price. Bandy Lee and colleagues had broken ranks to speak the truth, had stirred the hornet’s nest, and the hornets came after them in swarms. Now, Bandy Lee has published another book – PROFILE OF A NATION: TRUMP’S MIND, AMERICA’S SOUL.

George Kourounis is a renowned global explorer and storm chaser who specializes in documenting extreme forces of nature including: tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes, deserts, caves, avalanches and more. He is an Explorer In Residence for The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, the Chairman of the Explorers Club Canadian Chapter, and has received several awards and medals for his efforts. He frequently finds himself driving into the eye of fierce storms, or descending ropes into actively erupting volcanic craters, often while hosting television programs including “Angry Planet” and others.  He has given four TEDx talks, and has addressed the United Nations Environmental Emergencies Forum. George’s expeditions have taken him to 65 countries on all seven continents to such far-flung places as: Madagascar, Turkmenistan, Vanuatu, Greenland, North Korea, Myanmar, and Antarctica.
