On Aug. 6, 2024 MPR News was among the first to report that Vice President Kamala Harris had tapped Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her Democratic running mate. MPR News immediately launched wall-to-wall, live coverage of the historic announcement. Our news hosts and producers scrapped their scheduled programming to get reaction from Minnesota lawmakers, political analysts and callers. Reporters fanned out across the state to talk to voters about the Walz pick. And our politics editor joined each of our new shows throughout the day to talk about the governor's political ascent and record. Our special programming culminated with Harris formally introducing Walz as her running mate during a late afternoon rally in Pennsylvania, which MPR News also carried live.

Members of the St. Louis County Rescue Squad spent almost 6,000 hours on the rescue and recovery of two canoeists who plunged over Curtain Falls in the BWCA on May 18. It was the all-volunteer squad's biggest operation to date in its more than 60 year history.
