Back in the day, almost everything associated with Star Wars bubbled with excitement, adventure and a certain sense of grandeur (delusional or not), along with the mystique of the philosophical and theological aspects of the saga. Sometime in the early ‘90s, AFX did a track which he initially called ‘Jedi’ and it was simply amazing. Later on it was renamed ‘On The Romance Tip’ and honestly, that change took away a little of the magic gifted to it by its original title.

Nowadays Star Wars is, at the very least, a deeply divisive franchise and so I don’t expect everybody to appreciate the title, but please, please - when you think of a Jedi, try to picture Luke as a young man with the world at his feet and a cyborg for a dad, or Obi-Wan as a silver-haired proponent of deep mysticism and the ways of a lone warrior. You get my drift?

So on to the music! I was fairly happy with the original mix of this track (currently out of stock), but I felt that some of the initial themes could be extended and modified, with some new chords introduced toward the end, giving it a heavily remixed feel. In fact, other than most of the original instruments staying the same it has gone through some serious alteration. It’s not really better or worse than the original - just different.

By the way, just to clarify, this track has literally nothing to do with Richard D. James.

Narration: Meeting people who are so much like yourself at a different stage in life can be quite a daunting affair. This track focusses on one such event. As a variation of the Romantic 'Doppelgänger'-motive, it forces out some of the mental magic making you ask: How 'my' is 'my life'?

This piece was fairly challenging to produce and initially it just wasn’t working - that is until I introduced a deep bass drone, which keeps going throughout the vast majority of the track. Once I’d added that bass, the rest slid fairly easily into being.

Description:
I have been working on an expressive drone, the NOF_ExciteThePipe to supplement my performances on the Soma Cosmos and Soma Pipe. A stable release has been completed, time to put it through it's paces. And it's my Christmas Holidays, so plenty of time to ponder, ruminate, experiment and lay down some tracks with my Soma Cosmos, Soma Pipe,  human voice, and myNS Wav electric violin. The COSMOS was loaded with the Rhythmic Firmware release R1.51.

This is pretty much a one or two take improvised recording three movement piece. Movements one, two and three were recorded into Ableton Live to capture the ideas and final minor adjustments to the mix. Some reverb was added onto movement one as well as a granular synthesiser, apart from this no other effects were applied in Live as the main effect device was the hardware Soma Pipe, switching between various algorithms live during the recording. A touch of unpredictability was added through the memory station of the Soma Cosmos.

Movement one, features the NOF_ExciteThePipe drone feed from a custom programmed (programming and concept by Norman Freund) Max standalone executable to the Soma Pipe, to the Soma Cosmos memory station, then fed back to the drone for the initial recording. This formed track three. Copies of track three were dropped into the granular synthesiser of Robert Henke, the Granulators III, forming a drifting harmony back drop.

Movement two, features the Soma Pipe played through the Soma Cosmos, feeding it human speech articulations and singing. Having all the Soma instrument dials there in front of me and having my hands free, allowed complete artistic freedom, for an organic performance.

The final movement, much quieter now, was played with my electric violin through the Soma Pipe, then through the Soma Cosmos. This comprised of four tracks, recorded in a layer fashion from Live, but each track used the drifting memory station capabilities of the Soma Cosmos, just a bit more challenging to lay down the violin bow to make adjustments on the Cosmos. The third track used the octaver of the Pipe to emulate the Bass and Cello sections. The fourth track used the Orpheus mode of the Pipe,  a twin resonator, where the resonator frequencies were adjusted live during the recording.

Mr. Andrew's Garden was across the street from our house when we lived in Seattle.
This was in 1959, before the World's Fair and the Space Needle.
We would visit the Garden when we could, and every day was different.
The Chinese would visit on weekends, in the afternoon.

It was a  huge garden and the Andrews were always busy working in it.
Avery and Sarah, Mrs. Andrew's grown children, lived there with them.
Sarah lived above the garage and Avery lived in the garage.
Avery fought in Korea and had a habit.
Cradle Needle was written for him.
Sarah was just wrong.

Everything in our selections is a memory of what happened. Do not become confused. The Garden is as deep as your imagination.
