Solid Steel (17th November) In Hour 1 we turn the spotlight on Mr Bongo the record shop and label that became an established bearer for hard-to-find, classic Latin music, particularly Brazilian, but also further afield and the first UK shop to sell vinyl releases from independent hip hop labels such as Def Jam, Rawkus and Nervous. It began in Venezuela 30 years ago – filling suitcases with amazing latin records to bring back to Europe. And it continued ever since; private warehouse visits in the US, dusty back street basements in South America, houses and garages in Africa, and lesser-known spots in Europe and Asia. Mr Bongo bring eclectic and unexpected Brazilian, Latin, African, Jazz, Soul, Reggae and Psychedelic flavours to the dance-floor with a seemingly bottomless stock of weird and wonderful selections. They told us;
"This mix was put together by David ‘Mr Bongo’ Buttle, Gareth Stephens, Gary Johnson and Graham Luckhurst. A selection of some of the deepest cuts from the their record collections, taking in Brazilian, African, soul, jazz, folk, psyche and disco. A reflection of what they spin during DJ sets and in radio shows plus a few mellow moods, chosen specifically to fit the Solid Steel vibe. Mostly acquired in a pre-Discogs world where the prices were nice. We hope you enjoy this mix and listen to it often."

Solid Steel Radio Show 17/11/2017 Hour 1 - Mr Bongo

Wooooah  on shuffling through some old mini discs , i stumbled across this track which is from 2005 !  and Features a collaboration with a real nice emcee from Colorado 
' The Clurk ' aka (Cale Farnham) .

I dont wanna talk too much about the mix( yeah its quiet ) other  than say , the usual ' all sounds from vinyl ' rules applies , but on this track  I wasnt using monitor speakers  just headphones  so this track was recorded straight from the MPC- direct into a mini disc recorder . And then probably mini disc into laptop  into sonic stage or wave burner  and then  off to Colorado in the form of an email.

I enjoyed this beat , and felt like i would throw it up again  just for nostalgia .

"Back in May of 2016, a message from my good friend Mark de Clive-Lowe showed up in my inbox. It was an email introduction connecting Eric Crandell (the founder of 101 Apparel) with me for a possible collaboration project. Over the years, 101 Apparel had collaborated with a list of acclaimed DJs, artists and music producers for their limited-edition "101 Apparel Artist Series", so I was quite honored when they reached out to me as well.

 At the time, Mark and I were riding the wave from my Sound Signature release, "Moon Circuitry", a raw uptempo dance-oriented song which features his brilliant keyboard playing in combination with some soulfully-unapologetic "slap you in your mouth" music I produced. The record broke boundaries, won awards and opened eyes in ways I didn't anticipate, majorly catapulting me back into the music production scene after my 5 year hiatus away from releasing records. And things have been growing stronger and stronger ever since...something I'm beyond grateful for. So when the 101 Apparel opportunity presented itself, I knew immediately that it would be important to connect the dots back to my history...helping my new audience I've acquired in the current underground dance chapter of my career, to also have a taste of my roots in underground hip-hop, etc.

For the exclusive promo 7-inch, I wanted to revisit a song favorite I produced and recorded with Mos Def, and on the flip, include a previously unreleased song I produced and recorded with Yukimi Nagano (prior to the formation of the band Little Dragon she's now become famous with).

Constantly touring and DJing internationally this entire time, it's taken longer for everything to finalize for this project, but I knew once all was completed, it would be special. Plus being that 2018 marks the 25th anniversary since my music was first released on vinyl, I felt this was also the perfect way to remind or enlighten folks that I didn't just pop onto the music scene in 2015. Despite my youthful appearance, I've been at this for quite a long time. It's remained important for me to not only continue to challenge myself in new ways, but to maintain the balance of staying true to the principles that my legacy was first founded on...the things that I've learned from the greats that came before me. 

Collecting records since the age of 5 means that diggin' for music has literally been threaded into the fabric of my lifestyle the last 4 decades. It's been a lifelong journey of discovery, education and pure joy that keeps me growing, learning and sharing. So I definitely wanted my DJ mix to reflect this. My goal was to cohesively weave a slow-building story using numerous vinyl gems from various soulful genres I've collected over the years...records that would eventually inspire the listener to get up out of their seat and dance, evoking the kind of inner happiness that only music from the soul can fill us with. Whether we're familiar with the music or not, or what year it was recorded and released...good music that moves us remains timeless in my opinion. And hopefully through my selections, this becomes apparent...enjoy!" - GE-OLOGY

Copenhagen based party starter Dj Universe presents a mix of 100% Azymuth: 

"In February 2015 my friends Sean and Anthon booked Azymuth for a show in Copenhagen and somehow I ended up juggling the roles of being the designated driver, camera man and warm up DJ for the concert. I will never forget those days. The group turned the depressing Danish winter into summer at the snap of a finger just with their presence and the concert itself had one of the most diverse audiences I’ve ever experienced in Copenhagen, all coming together under the warm Azymuth groove. 

Narrowing down 40 years of great music down to a 1h 47m mix was a tough process and I know there are some obvious ones missing, nevertheless I tried my best to grasp and represent the versatile soundscape the group has left behind. The mix spans over 4 decades and about 75 BPM, from the shade of the palm tree to the floor in the club, and I hope it can provide just a little of the magic that I felt witnessing the group play live."

Solid Steel (24th May) Following on from last year's treatment of 'Paul's Boutique' (by DJ Food, Cheeba and Moneyshot), United States of Audio does the same with De la Soul's groundbreaking album 3 Feet High and Rising. It's not just a mix, but more like an audio documentary about an album that is also about to celebrate it's 25th anniversary. In his own words;
'Several years in the making and including around 100 tracks, this is my personal tribute to De La Soul's '3 Feet High and Rising'. Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, 'How High's The Water Mama' tells the story of one of hip hop's most influential albums.
When De La Soul's debut album dropped in 1989 I was ten years old. Yet, by some stroke of amazing good fortune a cassette copy of '3 Feet High and Rising' found its way into my hands thanks to my best mate's older brother (though I'm pretty sure said brother had no idea of this fact!). The music was a revelation and had a significant influence in shaping my musical tastes - in fact I can't think of any other album that has had such a profound effect on me as this one. Thus '3 Feet High and Rising' holds a special place in my musical affections. Now, some twenty-five years after its original release, it's time to pay my respect to Pos, Dove, Mase, and Prince Paul...'
