The 2017 offering from Jace Everett. Returning to some of his more Country and Americana roots on several tracks, including a chilling cover Guy Clark's "The Last Gunfighter Ballad" (recorded live the day that Clark passed away).Everett still manages to push the envelope up to the breaking point on tracks like "Love's Not What We Do" and "Free", infusing his politics with the personal. The opening track, "Woke Up in This Town", has the dark pacing of his "Bad Things" (Theme to True Blood), but with significantly more menace. Over all it's an album filled with love songs ("Green or Blue", "Rescue Me", "Golden Ring", and "Someplace") punctuated by outbursts of darkness and melancholy all set to some more traditional hooks. A fine return to form from an often idiosyncratic artist.
