Our mix series returns March 15, 2019 with the 9th edition mixed and compiled by Vatican Shadow. It includes 13 exclusive tracks available for download or on 2x12“ vinyl  [O-TON 119].

Since becoming a Berghain resident in 2017, Dominick Fernow’s risk-taking hybrid live/DJ sets as Vatican Shadow have become conduits for infusing techno with contrasting musical ideas – from noise, industrial and ambient to distorted melodies and rhythms that push the club’s borders in unexpected ways.

It’s an idiosyncratic approach to techno rooted not only in Fernow’s 25-plus years as an experimental and noise musician under more than a dozen aliases (e.g. Prurient, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement) but also in his role as founder of the vital New York-based Hospital Productions, whose discography exceeds some 500 releases. The label – which in 2017 celebrated its 20-year anniversary – is also home to the majority of Vatican Shadow output to date.

Under that alias, Fernow’s numerous albums and 12”s (including 2017’s ‘Rubbish Of The Floodwaters’ on Ostgut Ton) oscillate between ominous, distorted machine-funk, techno and ambient electronics; equal parts noise, melody and rhythm. Since 2011, the project’s intentionally ambiguous visual identity has been defined by War on Terror-related imagery and track titles – and the media’s role therein.

Both the ‘Berghain 09’ mix and accompanying exclusive 12”s – featuring exclusive tracks by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Virile Games, Los Angeles Death Cult, Ron Morelli, Volvox, JK Flesh, Alberich, Ugandan Methods | Prurient and Merzbow – reflect Vatican Shadow’s composite musical influences and relationship to Berghain as a club. Stylistically, the two vinyls are divided between clubbier and experimental electronics, with vocal samples of Genesis Breyer P-Orridge acting as a bridge between the two. All tracks on Side D end in locked grooves.

As Fernow describes in his own words:

“My interest in DJing developed naturally out of industrial music traditions such as mail art, tape trading, and sound collage. While this mix, of course, does not solely focus on cassettes, they were used as the bridge between the seemingly disparate areas and cross-sections of underground electronic edits you will find sewn together from diverse factions to create a sonic ‘cut up’. Accordingly, the artists featured with exclusive tracks span several continents and generations of electronic music subculture, from the birth of industrial in the UK and the rhythmic loops of Japanese noise, to the raw collision of genres found in the NYC underground. ‘Berghain 09’ is a tribute to the techno mixtapes that influenced me during my introduction to raves and dance music in the 90s.”

In 1990, Frankie Bones opened “Groove Records,” a techno outpost deep in Brooklyn. Adam X soon became a co-owner and by 1995 the shop was relocated to Manhattan, with Heather Heart rounding out the trio. The new shop was called “Sonic Groove” and it quickly became ground zero for techno in New York City. There was nothing like it in the area at the time or, arguably, anywhere in America.

Sonic Groove was 110% dedicated to techno, a genre that was just past its infancy and exploding worldwide. A community emerged around the shop and thus the label was spawned.

Adam X had an agenda from the very beginning as label curator (and eventually sole owner): to release some of the most forward thinking underground techno music around. Realizing that goal was no easy feat, considering the volume of records being released at the time in a fast-paced and growing scene.

Fast-forward 25 years. Adam X and Sonic Groove are still at the forefront of modern underground techno, sticking to the same ethos and pushing the envelope further into the future. The faces and sounds may have changed, but the label has kept true to the vision. In an era now dominated by image, style, and trivial content, Sonic Groove continues its mission of putting the music first and foremost.

Now in celebration of 25 years, Sonic Groove releases a muscular 12 song compilation of  previously unreleased music comprised from the label's current artist roster.  A testament to techno's ever evolving sound and serves as a modern document showcasing the path Sonic Groove has taken and where it has led to, proving that as time passes, there is still room for creativity and innovation in the genre as demonstrated throughout these 12 tracks.

'hot steel'  is back on трип!

For the second round in the series, the idea remains the same - Nina Kraviz announces the stream date and sends out a call to artists for their unreleased music to oidodekraviz@gmail.com, all genres are welcome. After the stream takes place, the favourite tracks are signed and a few weeks later a digital only 'hot steel' compilation is released.

The second hot steel stream took place in Mykonos' Cavo Paradiso and results into another multitalented, high octane and unique 21 track compilation.

PREMIERE: SHDW & Obscure Shape - Die Dunkle Bedrohung

Tresor Records proudly announces From The Far Future 3, a new album from Terrence Dixon. Continuing the story of his previous two iterations on this title, spanning 3 vinyl discs, it is a serene undertaking of unrivalled Motor City rhythms and sound. It finds the Detroit producer oscillating, from excursions in paradises of synth pointillism to husky storytelling and Dixon’s peculiar beat work.

A master in letting shapes find their form, Dixon allows the listener to wallow in recurring scenes. Lost Communication Procedure, Found In Space and Remarkable Wanderer etch a sound world of choral vibrations and cinematic dirge. Where gaseous clouds scrape the natural sonic pastures of such environments, the hypnotized listener staggers a drunken step, moving sideways by 0 or 1 or -1 into new scenes. Not least an expert in industrial abstraction, a human silhouette permeates Dixon’s sound. His ethereal storytelling portrays the heart-rending romance of Unconditional Love and unearths in I’m Away In Detroit monologuing moodscapes recalling our GPS voice assistants.

Out of Darkness initial recalls Kraftwerk’s Geiger counter, as from pure signal data and feedback spells an unceasing locomotive wormhole. Hazy, dense grooves drive across bleak city scenes in We Can Rebuild Him, into the raw vibe of Framework and the rude stabs of Spectrum of Light. The varying presence of Dixon's work is one of his textural signatures, at arm's length, brushing right within, and far out. The bumping mood of Earth Station is one such moment, close enough to isolate the diving bass somewhere within, simultaneously from afar it becomes positively gravitational.

The first two records of the series are rightfully considered among the finest embodiments of contemporary minimalism, symbolic documents of afro-futurism. This new work revives the classic series, continuing the relationship between Tresor and the undisputed master of Detroit techno into the present day.
