It is not everyday we are sent a 5 hour mix from someone we have asked to join our Phonica mix series; but when Sheffield & Manchester legend Luke Una sends one… you have to jump straight into it! Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art. We were honoured to have close friend of We Out Here, Luke Una, join us again this year for a very special takeover.

Standing strong through 4 decades of music, we welcomed his É Soul Cultura takeover for a 6 hour session at The Bowl.

Co founder of the iconic UK club Electric Chair and founder of Manchester's much loved and long standing queer party, Homoelectric, alongside his label and event series E Soul Cultura, Luke has consistently remained at the forefront of a young dynamic forward thinking scene.

From  the momentous legacy of Sheffield and Manchesters musical heritage through the 80s and 90s Luke reworked 4 decades of dance through a distinctive futuristic lens into an alchemy that traverses from  spiritual jazz, slo mo chugging cosmic soul, Balearic Bossa to dance floor astral Jazz dance to the deepest House and Techno and bass buggin futurism, Afro and black heart deep Disco.

A true musical legend with no boundaries. Listen back to his takeover.

We know many of you have been waiting for this one...

We're overjoyed to finally be able to share the recording from a night in The Bowl with the pioneering DJ, producer, and architect for much of today's house music; Ron Trent.

Known for sets that embody the essence of soul, his performance from last Summer was undoubtedly a highlight for many.

Marsha Stern, the gift that keeps on giving <3 another generous offering from her sacred Roy Thode vault of recordings from a very golden age of dance floor culture. It’s a tremendous honour to be able to house this recording on our Soundcloud page, an untouched time capsule from almost half a century ago, allowing us the luxury of re-living that moment in that room with Roy Thode holding court behind the booth, providing the soundtrack to what would have been a wonderful night in a very special place. 1980, no smart phones, no discogs, no social media, CDJS or sync/loop buttons, the profession of DJing was still in its early beginnings of being defined and Roy’s dedication to the craft certainly helped define it. 
In a time where it’s not always so easy to feel proud of being “a DJ”, it’s inspiring to look back at the origins of dance floor culture, one of them being extremely dedicated, self-educated and oppressed homosexuals in New York who took it upon themselves to explore the aesthetics of music on the dance floor to extreme levels. This recording should give you a glimpse into what that might have sounded like. Please take a moment to listen carefully and allow yourself to understand the genius of Roy Thode’s craft as a DJ. We hope it inspires you as much as it inspired us. On this day, Roy would have become 76 years of age, long live his memory, thank you for the music and inspiring dedication to the craft. Happy Birthday Roy!

His production output has barely let up since, minting numerous labels and sub labels to release his and other's music, most notably Prescription Records, which helped define the smoky and jazz-indebted sound of deep house in the 1990s.
