DJ Johnny 5 (is alive!) AKA John Phelan has a long-standing love affair with Electronic Dance Music. Johnny 5 was introduced to EDM through Matt Darey's mix sessions at a young age, but found like-minded individuals few and far-between in Baltimore. Fast-forward to Miami, and its established club culture, and you find Johnny 5 in his element. After four years of soaking up as much Miami scene-shine as possible, Johnny 5 took off for Honolulu, where he performed at the Waikiki EDITION hotel and Next Door nightclub. Having performed in Miami, Hawai'i, and now taking on San Francisco, Johnny 5's style is the kind of eclecticism that distinguishes a true DJ from a jukebox (as they say, genres are for journalists). 

Johnny 5's style can be seen like a painter's palette in the sense that genres, like colors, evoke different emotions and responses. So, he might evoke some empathy with the dancers through a good vocal section on a synthy Progressive House track, and then drop it into a solid Tech Disco groove to let people really break it down. A lot of his performances have to do with taking calculated risks, sometimes they work out, sometimes they don't, but a DJ has to both lead the crowd and follow them, both educate and serve.  If you look at DJing that way, its impossible stick to one genre, it would be like having a canvass with one color on it, no dynamism.

Come to a show, talk about music, hell even make a request, and if you have trouble finding him, just look for the guy in the room with the biggest smile on his face, whether behind the tables or on the dance floor.
