- Make a song in response to the weekly assigned poem (a new poem is published every Wednesday)

As customary, the first haiku of the year is by Kobayashi Issa.

Among the four great masters of Japanese haiku, Kobayashi Issa (1763-1828) was the most prolific: during his lifetime he wrote over 20,000 haiku, hundreds of tanka, and several haibun.

As far as possible everything was created using VCV Rack virtual modular, manipulated via mapped physical controls and recorded to multiple tracks in one "Live" take. This was a bit of a speculative process as I intended to lift a section of the blossoms sequence, corrupt it using Nakama, the multi loop and tape disintegration environment from Giorgio Sancristoforo, https://www.giorgiosancristoforo.net then add the results back into the composition. There was a bit of tweaking needed as at the time of recording I had no idea how long the Nakama output would be. I also added a tape delay to part of the chimes track.

Saitō Sanki (1900 – 1962) was a dentist who discovered his passion for haiku poetry in his mid-thirties, when his colleagues at the hospital in Soto Kanda convinced him to write a haiku for a collection. Later, he became one of the most important exponents of wartime haiku: he was imprisoned in 1940 during the government’s World War II persecution of controversial artists, and was officially forbidden to write until the end of the war.

There is Crowley on the shelf, there’s Blavatsky in the wings
There’s a TV show from Saturn airing interviews with death
Like Zeppelins in Bohemia like a dragon on my back

Devastating all the neons saying “Woman I Love You”
He’s got tired of the parks, all the parks they let him down
With their cans of beer a plenty with the scent of bubblegum
In his mouth in his ears in his hands
Lies the universal truth of nowhere man

At Fontanepromenade there are mirrors on the floor
There’s a bathroom full of glue, there’s dementia in the walls
I’ve been cut eleven times by all these mirrors cracking up
Then I took an elevator to the bottom of my cup
In the fuzz in the bliss in the pines
In the universal eye of Father Time

There’s a galaxy of thieves, constellations of desire
Like pictures of Christine, her typewriter’s unaware
Rewrite Arabic poems, there’s this need to miscompare

I'm primarily a visual artist both 2D and 3D, for the last decade I've operated almost exclusively in the digital 3D realm.   since the late 80s I've made periodic forays into the sonic world, MIDI sequencing, minimalism, musique concrète, found sounds  and improvisation. I am seldom happy with anything and seldom consider a piece finished.
