The sweeping, the ticking, the chimes, the revelers…loved it

Disquiet Junto 0663 was an invitation to compose music to accompany a spinning-platter hard drive. 

I thought I would miss this one, as I was traveling abroad these past two weeks without any gear, not even a pair of decent headphones. But inspiration struck at the kitchen table in a rented flat in Manchester UK and there was no ignoring the impulse. This piece was recorded off the tempo grid, the notes were painted in a piano roll, and the automation was done with a trackpad. A very different creation experience and set of constraints for me! 

I like a little percussion with my drones, so I used the new stem splitter feature in Logic Pro to extract a few isolated samples of the hard drive chitter to establish a rhythmic foundation.

You will experience the song differently played through computer speakers vs headphones, and I can't say which way is the right way.

The Lake Shore Drive Incident (disquiet0663)

Still had time to taste some crystals of silence, before the devil began to distort the transparent symmetry.
Hands with arched nails pull up the white raw silk stockings to her knees; she feels a renewed spirit, even though she knows the stockings will eventually come down again.
You can already hear the mud walking outside.
She goes out to buy milk bread at the cafe, when she opens the door of the building; she gives in to the dream the primacy of guiding her, tiptoe over water lilies.
A sting each time a bottle was dropped at the bottom of the recycling bin, she thought of the neighbors who were still sleeping, would they receive messages in their dreams that weren't written on the bottles?
She was reading a book like an actress in rehearsal as she walked down the street in autopilot mode, her knuckles brushing against the fresh morning myths; she was possessed by images in the heavy, noisy air, lines of passion in fragmentation.
People running on the small stone walkway with burning pain in their knees and heels.
He arrives at the cafe, sits down on the terrace where the sun shines, a breath of coffee spreads in the air with mysterious symbols. Under the water mirror of a small lake, roots in the form of clock hands that do not give in to the call of time, clinging to childhood, giant egg in the center of the lake half out of water, has a crack, is full of blood, through the blood a way. In the distance, a rocky slope, dismembered, alienated trees.
Cobalt-blue bodice, pointers tremble little needle screams, shadows in the eyes of the titties, two twin chapels, between them goes the size of your soul, close your eyes and remain static, cathedral of flavors of private cultivation, the pink mouth gives itself naked in the open air a procession courting the skin. Fine silk on which a heart of light is drawn falls from her breasts, with her hands she brushes away things like abracadabra, awakened mystery, creator plush, desert cross, chalice between her legs, soda with bubbles, she plays the organ.

The haiku more or less said it all for this one, so yes a bit obvious but had to be done. I knew I was going to start and end with collages of samples so created sequenced elements and some semi-random pings in virtual modular using VCV Rack. As usual I set up multi-track recording and physical controls then recorded a live one take improvisation. 

I then added the sampled elements, initially the New Year midnight chimes, these are my own recording. The bell as recorded didn't fit the final mis so I pitched it down a couple of semitones.

Margin Shoulder

Mount Asama
amidst its fumes and ash
fresh young leaves! 

The event Bosun refers to is the eruption of Mount Asama in 1783, which instantly killed over 1,000 people. The toxic ash traveled 100 miles to Edo, making farmland useless and causing many more people to starve.

One of the four great haiku masters, Yosa Buson studied both Japanese and Chinese poetry. He was also an accomplished painter, and most of his poems were accompanied by paintings, resulting in a more diverse and individual set of works than the one by his main historical influence, Basho.

I'm primarily a visual artist both 2D and 3D, for the last decade I've operated almost exclusively in the digital 3D realm.   since the late 80s I've made periodic forays into the sonic world, MIDI sequencing, minimalism, musique concrète, found sounds  and improvisation. I am seldom happy with anything and seldom consider a piece finished.
