'I Can't Love You Anymore' by Adam Barnes

Over the past few years, Oxford born singer/songwriter Adam Barnes has truly embodied the twenty-first century definition of a troubadour. In a bid to share his stirring songs of heartache with the world, the 23 year old singer has taken his music to the world, touring throughout Europe, across the USA and beyond, taking in many a sofa and floor along the way, and consistently wowing audiences en route. 

The release of his debut album 'The Land, the Sea & Everything Lost Beneath' last summer - a stunning and subtle collection of English-bred Americana - saw the world suddenly come to Adam, increasing his fanbase and extending his travels to further reaches of the globe. With an ever-expanding listenership, Adam's musical ambitions have in turn grown, as can be heard on the elegantly anthemic 'I Can't Love You Anymore', the lead single from his 'One Day We'll Be Fine' EP, released on Sept 27th via his own newly founded imprint Wild Native Records. 

The track - four minutes of raw, chest-beating indie-folk produced by rising producer Sam Winfield (Amber Run, Pixel Fix) - perfectly combines Barnes' pure, honeyed voice with clattering electric rhythms, Bon Iver-esque guitar lines, joyful harmonies, and a lyric brimming with honesty and integrity; it manages to be both intimate and seemingly capable of filling a stadium all at once. 

Lyrically inspired by the divorce of his parents in his late teens, writing the song was a cathartic experience for Barnes: "This is a song about my parents...towards the end of my late teens they split and it’s never really been something I’ve talked or written about before...but I had to, I know it's something so many people my age have lived through. 'I Can't Love You Anymore' is such a straight up sentence, but in that situation I guess it needs to be quite blunt."

Adam Barnes began his singer-song writing career in 2010 with early support slots for the likes of William Fitzsimmons and Slow Club in his hometown of Oxford. He has since released one EP ('Blisters') and one full-length album ('The Land, the Sea & Everything Lost Beneath"), both to critical acclaim throughout Europe, whilst his live performances have become renowned for their intimate intensity.

Bad Luck is the lead single and opening track to the 2nd full length album of Adam Barnes; A songwriter based in the countryside of Oxfordshire. This is an extension of the final song of the ‘One Day We’ll Be Fine’ E.P named 'Tennyson'.  

Bad Luck is a song that seems to be a staple of the independent music scene. Small independent artists looking to make space for themselves and the struggle that it’s taken to get to this point, A reflection on 3 years since Adam's last record.

It’s meant to be raw, open and intimate, backed by the strings of Barney Morse Brown (Birdy, Duotone, Richard Walters) This isn’t a song looking or asking for pity but stating the realisation that every two steps forward seems to be followed by a step back. It’s optimism in the face of defeat, a second wind to make a go of it. It seemed a perfect way to open the record and set up the songs to come.
