In anticipation of Kit Sebastian's forthcoming second album in 2021, the duo have delved into their archives to present a special digital single release. Think of this as not necessarily a taster of what's to come, but more as a starter that refreshes the appetite for the next course.

'Rain (باران)' was the second track recorded in their analogue studio, and because of this, it has a slightly more primitive rudimentary sound. It was written more or less to test the studio and to learn what sounded good and didn't. It was a hot French hazy July day which you can hear translated into the sound of the track. The version on this EP has been re-sung to include Merve’s vocals.

'Questions' was written and recorded for the duo's short film 'C'est Quoi Le Mantra Moderne'. It was intended for a scene that they would later abandon: a summer night, sitting in an old-fashioned café in Le Grand-Pressigny, where they ask each other one question after another without any clear answers. Given the limited amount of film they had, this idea felt risky which meant they couldn't release the track with the film. Yet, it can still be enjoyed on its own and hopefully, still, enrich the experience of their visual essay and bring a new layer to it.

We hope you enjoy this further excursion into the world of Kit Sebastian, and big thanks to the duo for rescuing 'Questions' from the cutting room floor for us all to savour.

‘On The Daily’ is the electrifying first single taken from The Brkn Record’s forthcoming debut album, ‘The Architecture of Oppression Part 1’. A ground-breaking concept album from Jake Ferguson of The Heliocentrics. It is a critical journey through the eyes of black Britons, blending powerful and sobering narratives with psychedelic and soulful symphonies.

‘On The Daily’ is a future anthem that has a timeless quality to it. With flawless production that is relevant and urgent today, but would also feel at home had it emerged from the Cadet Records stable at their 60s and 70s peak. It displays the strength and intimacy of a modern-day Odetta jamming with Charles Stepney. 

A child of Nigerian, West African parents, Ugochi Nwaogwugwu, narrates and delivers the song with the strength and ethereal beautify of an avenging angel. Ugochi describes this song as an "attempt to express the degree of power, resilience and focus it takes to be black and in this world. So many forces trying to take our peace of heart and mind. Though the battle rages on, those on the frontline win when we keep our poise and expose the perpetrators of racism and white terrorism."

This song is a clarion call driving awareness to the fact that these things are happening to black people everyday, and you have to be strong to survive this - on the daily.

The Brkn Record - On The Daily (Feat Ugochi Nwaogwugwu)

We are very happy to premiere the meditative sounds of  “Spaceland”, by pedal steel player, visual artist and composer Joe Harvey-Whyte. Forthcoming on None More Records, London. 

Like everyone else anywhere that’s been opening up, we on the MIMS team occasionally feel overwhelmed by the new pace of life, work, events, new releases, social engagements and more besides, so it’s a real pleasure to take a step back sometimes and listen attentively to such soothing music as this. 

“Spaceland” is taken from a track EP, ‘Flatland/Spaceland’, Harvey-Whyte’s debut solo release. ‘Flatland/Spaceland’ blurs the borderlines between ambient and neoclassical to create an engaging and meditative listening experience.

The first side of the 2 track EP, titled “Flatland” is a glacial ambient creation made using pedal steel guitar processed through multiple effects together with field recordings and occasional revelatory sounds from Himalayan singing bowls. “Spaceland”, on side B, takes the composition and refracts it through an orchestral lens. A 26-piece ensemble delicately creeps into the calming world echoed by side A. As the piece develops the result is something more akin to a film soundtrack. Inspired by Edwin A. Abbott’s 1884 novel Flatland, in which a two-dimensional protagonist encounters a three-dimensional world for the first time, and struggles to explain it to his fellow natives of the 2D Flatland, Joe Harvey-Whyte attempts conceptually to give depth to what that which appears flat. 

On “Spaceland”, Joe Harvey-Whyte worked closely with Ell Kendal, a sound artist and orchestrator from London. Kendal is known for his use of experimental scoring techniques to create notated works for classical ensemble. His influences range from avant-garde composers and performance artists, to early religious music, and ritual, and you can hear that in his interpretation of the original piece here. The process of orchestrating and recording all the instruments for “Spaceland” took around a year, with additional challenges to the process caused by working through COVID. Everything was recorded at Joe’s studio in North London, with the exception of a few remote recordings. 

Joe says of the process of orchestrating the piece “Ell’s scores are quite idiosyncratic and were more of a gentle guide than a definitive representation of the piece as it should be played. Flatland was an improv creation and I wanted this orchestral refraction to embody that level of randomness and chance. Many of the beautiful blossoming moments in Spaceland came about by ‘accident’”.

Joe elaborates on his process: “With my music I often like to create a sonic landscape and just sit there. Breathing slowly and contemplating. When composing, my pieces allow me to take some time out from the fast paced nature of much of life here in London. The pedal steel is manipulated through effects beyond recognition. I didn’t really set out to make a “pedal steel” ambient EP. More that the pedal steel is my expressive tool and the means by which I can access a whole range of different tonalities which perhaps others might get with synths, voice or classical instruments like strings.”

Huw Marc Bennett creates a warm, deep, retro groove, the sound of sun kissed vinyl. He draws on Tim Maia, Augustus Pablo and Idris Muhammed as much as he does the Jazz scene and community he has found in South East London, with a streak of ‘Sain Records’ brand welsh phycyedlia running through the whole thing. 

Tressilian Bay started out as a long lost live session recorded at the  Total Refreshment Centre studios, featuring Chelsea Carmichael (Sax), Rosie Turton (Trombone) Shirley Tetteh (Guitar) Jake long (Drums) with Huw at the helm on bass and compositions. Huw utilised his human style of production and multi instrumentality seen in his project Susso (Soundway Record) as well as the glorious vocal contributions of Miryam Solomon, to mold these recordings in to this mature and emotional debut, with a subtle nod to hedonistic summer nights, whether spent on the glamorgan coast or the hot lewisham streets.
