Paul Murphy’s Claremont 56 label welcomes a genuine legend of UK music to its roster – Chaz Jankel, the man whose dizzying musicality and love of soul, funk and disco did much to shape the sound of Ian Dury’s Blockheads band in the late 1970s and early ‘80s.

A virtuoso keyboardist with a deep love of Black American music, Jankel’s arrangements and compositional skills were key to the success of their records, the funkiest of which not only became crossover pop hits – see ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’ and ‘Reasons To be Cheerful, Part 3’ in particular – but also saw heavy rotation in now iconic New York clubs including the Paradise Garage and Studio 54. 

This continued during the formative years of his solo career, with ‘My Occupation’, ‘Questionnaire’ and ‘Glad To Know You’ (later famously re-edited and dubbed out for nu-disco dancefloors by Todd Terje) all becoming club hits. The great Quincy Jones also covered Jankel’s infectious single ‘Ai No Carrida’, while experimental, club-ready synth-jam ‘3,000,000 Synths’ was also influential during the early years of the electro movement.

For his Claremont 56 bow, Jankel has delivered an all-new workout recorded earlier this year, the simply titled ‘Rhumba Jam’. A typically warm, groovy and rolling affair, it features Jankel delivering infectious, stretched-out Rhodes electric piano solos over toasty bass, clipped guitar licks, warm bass, accordion-style synth motifs and a densely layered Rhumba rhythm. While relaxed and sun-soaked, it also has bags of Balearic dancefloor potential.

Murphy remixes under his now familiar Mudd alias, leaning into the track’s languid Balearic vibe while keeping a firm focus on the dancefloor. Beginning with an enticing mix of metronomic drums and jangly acoustic guitars, Murphy slowly layers up key elements of Jankel’s original – think rubbery bass, rhythmic handclaps, mazy synth sounds and those wonderful, stretched-out solos. It’s a version that pays due reverence to the quality of Jankel’s musicianship, production and arrangement while subtly extending it and reframing it for 21st century Balearic dancefloors.

A few wonderful Polish friends @theverypolishcutouts @jestembisti and @juliarover from Poland recently visited me and those encounters inspired me massively.

Maybe I’m just missing home...

This selection feels fresh with late 70s, ’80s and ’90s Polish popular music, full of super cool Reggae, Ska, Electro, and late-Disco adventures. Some of the tracks were waiting for me for many years - I finally feel they are here to shine again.

Though the New Jersey label Cheri Records only released a handful of records between 1974–1982, its impact echoes through soul, gospel, disco, and modern dance culture, and influenced artists ranging from Patrick Adams to MF DOOM.

We're happy to present the funky gospel from a group led by legendary producer Julius Brockington, The Family Tree, and their tune "Brand New Day".

Soulful dance music legend, producer and DJ Alexander Lay-Far returns to his jazz-funk & fusion roots in a completely new incarnation. For his latest project Lay-Far Dance Orchestra he has assembled an instrumental band with a stellar line-up, while occupying the role of the bass player, band leader, composer, sound engineer and arranger. Lay-Far Dance Orchestra has already won the love and recognition of audiences at live performances, reimagining songs from Lay-Far's previous albums, and are now ready to release the first album “Skybreak” with all new and original material written and produced by Lay-Far together with his band members and star guests, including Lipelis, Antoha MC and Seven Davis Jr. This work shows the departure from the predominantly electronic sound of his previous solo albums in favor of live instrumentation recorded to analogue tape, bridging the gap between jazz, library music, disco-funk, house, broken beat and drum’n’bass. The album “Skybreak” is out on In-Beat-Ween Music in Early 2026 on vinyl, digital and audiophile ¼” tape.

The first single “Aquarius Love” was created in collaboration with the inimitable artist, vocalist and lyricist Seven Davis Jr. In this composition cinematic soul and heavy jazz meet the restless energy of live drum & bass with deep and heartfelt vocals - timeless sound combined with a timeless message about life and love!  

Seven Davis Jr. tells us an intimate yet ironic story where the protagonist is navigating his breakup - trying to find peace and closure while fighting back the regrets, doubts and “forbidden” thoughts about his ex. The plot which is familiar to pretty much anyone. What must he do? Should he move on or call his ex? Fortunately there is no universal answer to this question and each should decide on his own. All we can do is “Live and learn”!

‘Melinda Latino’ is taken from the awesome ‘Melinda’ OST written by Butler & Peters, released in 1972. This is a heavy track right from the first beat –harps and breakbeats, leading into a soul piano mood, huge strings and backing vox.

Jimmy Smiths version of Barry Whites ‘I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More Baby’. A very dope intro break leads into crazy vocal chops before heating the main melody, in true Jimmy Smith style. Taken from his ‘Black Smith’ LP forPride, released in 1974.
