06 - Strange Fruit (Feat. Mattic & Justin Perceval)

Featuring Ed Harcourt, the muse of this track is World War II Soviet sniper Roza Shanina. It's taken from Rae & Christian's forthcoming album 'Mercury Rising', released on Late Night Tales' new sub label "Night Time Stories" on 20th October 2013.

"While writing abstractly about love and loss and going to a club of an evening are all passable things to write songs about, sometimes you just want a folk-tinged ode to a Russian female sniper. Thankfully production duo Rae & Christian have delivered just that with their new single, The Ballad of Roza Shanina. Taken from their forthcoming third album, Mercury Rising – their first since 2001's Sleepwalking – it features the soft, crumpled croon of Ed Harcourt and is based on the life of Soviet sniper, Roza Shanina, who fought and died during World War II. Having put herself forward to serve her country following the death of three of her brothers in battle, she went on to become the first Soviet female sniper to be awarded the Order of Glory and died trying to shield a wounded soldier in 1945. It's this context that fuels the lilting strum of The Ballad, with Harcourt singing from the perspective of Shanina and a loved one, the chorus of "Over and over, I'll wait for you, my Roza, my Roza", mocked by the line that precedes it: "one day all the shooting stops...One day came too late for you and me".

Marseille Movement is a 5-minute Latin Jazz jam follow-on from 'Okra'. Full of energy and spirit, It was recorded over in London in September 2022 with a bunch of AUS and UK based musicians.

From David: "After figuring out some basic sections and lead lines we did just one take of the recording and then the track was chopped up a few months later back at home. There’s so much joy in this song for me, it really captures the excitement of playing together and collaborating in a different part of the world. After the studio sessions some friends and I spent a bit of time in Marseille, South France where a lot of the ideas came from just listening to the recording over and over again while walking around the city".

Soundway Records presents a collection of Nigerian music chronicling a time when drum machines, synthesisers, imported pop, reggae, disco and soul collided with highlife, juju and cultural music.

The late 70s saw a period of political turbulence and prompted change across the country. Following suit, musicians and producers entered a period of experimentation, adaptation, modification and innovation, using new technology to renew and refresh cultural traditions. Nigerians formed their own unique approach to the limitless creativity these new instruments offered, to reveal a distinct sound which would dominate local airwaves for the decade to come. This is the first of two live albums that Terry has recorded for Mr Bongo. The second, entitled Welcome Home was released in March 2008 and features different tracks.

The German guitarist, bandleader and soundscape architect JJ Whitefield has been an innovative force of the contemporary scene of Neo-Jazz-Kraut, and adjacent sub-genres within the world of organic grooves, ever since the early 1990s. The work with his group Poets of Rhythm drew the blueprint for what’s now known as retro-soul, and his creative canvas has never been blank since with numerous solo projects and collaborations across diverse constellations.

'Oﬀ The Grid' is yet another testament to JJ Whitefield’s creativity. The album perfectly connects the dots to the spirit of the golden age of library music waving together a rich tapestry of his world of playfulness, hypnotic grooves, and driving drums. A year on from Dawn Again's pubwave classic Every Dog's Hotel, the Australian producer returns to Hell Yeah with more dreamy, breaks-driven downtempo brilliance.

Melbourne-based Nick Verwey won plenty of new fans for the sunlit, lo-fi sounds of his last album. It came after years of making music for, and playing records to, people who like to get down anywhere from rooftops to beaches and living rooms. The prolific producer has released on the likes of Houseworx and Enjoyment Division before now, and this new EP is another wonderfully dreamy and carefree outing.

'A Day In The Life of Pond Algae' unfolds over a lazy, dubby groove that is gently brought to life with bulbous synth loops and shakers, sunny chords and little smears of sound that pass like clouds. 'Guided Meditation For Dancefloor Nirvana' picks things up with dusty broken beats and instructional spoken words that encourage you to breathe over painterly synth strokes and effortlessly cool grooves. 'Vanilla Sky' lays you out flat on the lawn, the beach or the lounger and has you gazing up to an azure blue sky as gentle drums and synths wash over you like a cooling breeze. Lastly 'Crying Outside the Stadium' captures the magic of later afternoon on a summer day with more blurry pads and vocals and hints of cosmic melody that lead you towards nightfall with a loving hand.

This is another superbly soothing soundtrack for a calming day of outdoor dancing.
