For those who have expressed an interest in how I record my acoustic guitar, I use two small diaphragm condenser mics set up in an XY pattern mounted on a stereo bar within a reflexion filter. I record identical versions of the guitar tracks and then select one for the stereo left channel and one for the stereo right channel. 
Soundcloud has proved to be a wonderful place to connect with musicians and with people who love to listen to music all over the world. There is something truly magical and inspirational about receiving feedback from someone who has listened to my music.

The Key

This round I'm covering a Japanese pop song.
The problem is, I don't know Japanese but I really like the music.
The original was performed by veteran singer-songwriter Hideaki Tokunaga.  
I kind of shifted a little bit towards country pop in my arrangement and added an outro sax for completeness.  Just see what you think.

When I sent @Rosindust a very first demo, the piece still didn't have a name. She asked me on WhatsApp "Ok, how do you want me to play it?" and I replied "Nervous, furious like... like.. Wait!" and I sent her a picture of Medusa from the famous painting by Caravaggio. :)
Actually this piece is a kind of playful revenge: her last piece she asked me to play had guitar parts that were difficult for me and when I recorded them I swore revenge to her with a fiendishly complicated piece for 2 violins :) But, as always, she was so brilliant! On Lindisfarne, there is a ridge of land called 'The Heugh' made out of unyielding igneous rock. It is not particularly high but from this viewpoint you can see the Castle, the Abbey, St Cuthbert's Island, in fact most of the sights of the otherwise flat Lindisfarne. The old coastguard station is now an observation platform. I wanted to use this piece to describe the view as experienced by a modern tourist but also give a reflective nod to the old herring and general fishing industry of the past.

The High on the Heugh instrumental feature strings, cello, alto flute, high whistle, harp, bouzouki, concertina, choir, bodhrán and water pumpkins.

Background

I wanted to start this piece with an ascent section so it includes a climbing motif that leads the listener up to the top of the Heugh. There they can reflect on the view of St Cuthbert's Island etc. 

The next section introduces the idea of starting to think about the vanished fishing industry so I used the concertina, an instrument often used by sailors,  to start painting this picture. It also adds in the bouzouki supporting the harp and supported by various strings. 

Then it's into a hornpipe section and and it's a much more lively section as the listeners imagination takes free reign and features a bouzouki solo. It builds to a climax before the final melancholic reprise. This final reprise reflects on a lost time as it guides the listener back to the present day.

Q: Is there such a thing as a 'default daydream'?
My second favourite activity (after music) is moorland walking, where lost in thought as I amble along I often end up in a 12 bar blues reverie. As such, this track sums up such journeys with a striding/plodding country bass line and twittering bird flute backdrop. I've added a 'psych-blues' intro to reflect the mood stimulus.

Reverie Blues

The Globeflower Masters Vol. 2 is the slightly edgier and more grown-up sequel to Mark and Glenn's 2021 debut album. For this excursion, the Brighton-based duo wanted to lean a little further into their European film soundtrack influences, with inspiration mined from the works of Stefano Torossi, David Shire, and Roger Webb. This expansion of their sound builds upon the rich tapestry of cinematic funk à la David Axelrod, Serge Gainsbourg and Morricone that fashioned Vol. 1.

The Deluxe Edition of the album features five new tracks, comprising two new original recordings, a piano solo version of the closing track from the original album, and two remixes from Project Gemini and Andres y Xavi.

‘Shaded By Your Side’ takes things right back to the moody, dark and Axelrod-inflected sound of their first album. Much of this track was played in single takes to try and retain as much of the urgency and spontaneity as possible. 

‘Return to Salvador’ is described by the duo as if “Shuggie Otis and Marcos Valle have one too many caipirinhas and decide to visit outer space”. It fuses together Mark's space sounds and floaty pianos with Spanish guitar and busy, melodic bass creating a musical trip from the grounded and earthy sounds of Vol.1’ to the more upwards-looking and musically diverse sound of Vol.2.

The remixes give a different flavour to the release, but both pay homage to the original recordings. Sharing a mutual admiration for each other’s work, it seemed like a natural choice to ask Project Gemini to contribute. Here is what he had to say about his rework, “I’m a big fan of both volumes of Mark and Glenn’s ‘Globeflower’ LP’s and it was a huge honour to get a chance to rework one of my favourite tunes from Vol.2. There are many great layers to ‘A Voyage North’ so it was a lot of fun to choose my favourite elements, then put some Project Gemini flavours and sounds into the mix and create something new whilst hopefully keeping some of the spirit of the original track. A darker, fuzzier take on the album version”.

When Glenn first passed the original album to Steve KIW, his collaborator in Balearic production outfit Andres y Xavi, this was one of two tracks which he picked out as having some particularly Balearic DNA. As such, pushing this concept to its logical conclusion seemed like the obvious thing to do. There’s a shaded sunset sound paired with a 4/4 beat of Latin-leaning.
