Vibe Quest is the debut solo album from long-time DJ and producer Sabo. More than three years in the making, the record represents the artist's own personal journey, navigating the egos and politics of the music business while searching for positive vibes, open-minded audiences, and musical experiences that transcend a typical night out.

In 2011, Sabo left New York City after 11 years and headed to Los Angeles, both in search of sunshine and to chase a dream of playing deep, mid-tempo tribal music to fresh young ears. At the time, the new sound was being called moombahton, a style essentially created by Nadastrom, Sabo, Munchi, and a handful of others. In its early days, this music was rhythmic, sexy, and unified the dance floor, but as its popularity and reach broadened, it developed into something increasingly electronic and aggressive. Amidst this evolution, Sabo felt a bit lost; as the origins and influences that originally shaped the music were increasingly being cast aside, and his own deep, organic tribal style resonating less and less with mainstream crowds.

Vibe Quest is post-moombahton, a deeper, spiritual version of the genre that first put Sabo on the map as an established producer. A big part of the album's genesis can be traced back to 2013, when Sabo's DJ set on the Robot Heart bus at Burning Man introduced his unique vision to a whole new audience. "My deep, slow tribal sound was finally understood by a whole community of open minded people," he says. "That was really the beginning of the Vibe Quest. From there, I knew I wanted to make a whole album expressing my different influences."

And the influences are many—Vibe Quest is a bouillabaisse of cultures, samples, and sonics simmering together for a 12-course meal of body-moving entrees. Cumbia combines with jazz on "Vibe Quest," the album's title track, and actually features Sabo's own Mom, a self-taught vibraphonist. Songs like "Singing Game," "Afro Fuego," "Coconut Matras," and "Grey Is the New Sunny" infuse pitched-down tech house rhythms with African chants. Minimal dembow rhythms link with Jamaican basslines and echo effects on "Mind Dub," Caribbean steel drums are plated with techno on "Force 4 Movement," Sabo's own vocals float atop analog, sub-heavy disco cuts like "Sure is Pure" and "Black Flowers," and South American folklore melds with deep house on "Timbiqui Hasta DC" and "Drop That."

"My intention with this record is to manifest moments of positive feelings on the dancefloor," says Sabo. "I want to continue traveling the world, instilling these positive feelings within people and creating something meaningful by unifying cultures and communities."

The cover artwork is designed by Helia Jamali to symbolize a portal into the sounds of Vibe Quest . The image of the centered sun creates a hypnotic entrance into the music. Let the Vibe Quest begin...

The artwork by Helia Jamali visualizes the themes of summer and sunshine together perfectly.  This compilation will be released on the 1st day of the Summer Solstice - June 21st. 2016. "

The core element is the bassline (from the MOOG Voyager…), which I have layered with deeper pads and other effects in order to get more depth of field."

Coming together out of their own individual musical worlds, Rodriguez Jr. and Liset Alea met 15 years ago creating music for Laurent Garnier’s legendary imprint, F Communications. Since then, each have gone on to have blinding careers of their own, developing individual personas and sounds, becoming leaders in their fields.

A stunning partner, singer-songwriter, Liset Alea has been releasing albums since her teens. Perfectly poised for stardom since, her solo career saw her co-founding drum and bass, trip-hop band, Etro Anime in New York; co-writing and providing vocals on all songs. From here the only way was up for Alea, leaving the band to pursue her own truly solo ventures, her debut LP, No Sleep, released on EMI, was popular across multiple European territories. As an already well-seasoned artist, she later fronted the French new-wave group, Nouvelle Vague for seven years, touring the world, providing exciting and enchanting performances. With such a notable career to date that spans numerous musical styles from Drum and Bass to Downtempo New Wave, it is clear to see how Alea and Rodriguez Jr. are so perfectly matched.  
 
Known to many, as one of the best live electronic music acts the industry has to offer, Rodriguez Jr. is a multi-faceted musician as opposed to a DJ or producer. Well respected for his unique brand of melodic techno, Jr. takes his influences from genre’s far and wide feeding into his eclecticism. From classical artists such as Stockhausen to electronic groups such as Kraftwerk and LFO, his performances offer a new take on how electronic music can function in a club environment. Upon signing with Mobilee Records, Rodriguez has remained one of the imprints most treasured artists, proving time after time that live electronic music and performance, is as spell binding as any digitized track or record being spun. 

No strangers to collaboration, Jr. and Alea recently worked together on Rodriguez’s album ‘Baobab’; it was here that their creative flame was ignited. Inspired by one another’s musical tastes, the synergy between these two talents was clear from the start, making the prospect of future work together a certainty. Now picking back up on unfinished business, Jr. and Alea announce their new project RJLA, kicking things off with summer track ‘Radio’, releasing on Rodriguez’s native home, Mobilee Records.

Drawing on previous collaborations together, new and original single ‘Radio’ is a reflection of both artists musical appetites. Alongside ‘Radio’ Jr. and Alea include ‘Radian’, initially released by Rodriguez on his ‘Baobab’ album, Alea and him re-recorded the track during their cliff-top live performance for Cercle; Alea’s vocals elevating Rodriguez’s highly complex and technical melodies to new places. An extremely exciting and interesting project for Mobilee, the partnership between Rodriguez Jr. and Liset Alea presents electronic music for ears on and off the dancefloor.

Hicky & Kalo's Montreal-based imprint Plaisirs Sonores Records continues its rapid ascension to the fore of the scene with a lethal new two track EP led the label bosses themselves. The original cut from the Canadian pair is titled 'Astre', and it comes strapped an inimitable remix from ethereal techno master and founder of Steyoyoke; Soul Button.

'Astre' is a memorable melodic anthem with a signature groovy rhythm, it's certain to light up the dance-floor.

Since 2016, Soul Button has only ever released music via his own label, so it is a very special occasion as Hicky & Kalo welcome him to the ranks of Plaisirs Sonores. His remix of 'Astre' is a beautiful dreamy piece with angelic bells and hypnotic shakers.

The first notes of “Feys”, R.EK’s latest work and first single release in 2020, leave a volatile impression. The sound’s grace evokes the moment when you see a stranger’s face for the first time, when you inspect its details; cheek dimples, wrinkles on the forehead, a mysterious shade around the eyes.
With every passing second one discovers new details, striking passages taking turns with vulnerable sounds, and with every additional piece of the puzzle you’ll get closer to the core of this work. “Feys” heralds a new era for R.EK and introduces a new chapter for his label KnotenMusic—by uniting melodic techno with cinematic dramatics. In collaboration with Hannes Bieger, whose mixing adds a warm touch to the sound, R.EK is again pushing boundaries, and explores new grounds, where subtle, harmonious synthies and an enormous love for detail are paired to enable a new, distinct sound.

About KNOTEN
Under the umbrella of KNOTEN, R.EK is currently developing a new live performance concept that attempts to reinvent the communication between the artist and the audience by adding innovative visuals to the show. The new track will be released under KnotenMusic, which was launched as part of the KNOTEN project.
