Artisan Dub Soup - IV

In my mind, Jamie has curated some of the finest and most elegant deep dub and immersive ambient music and to achieve it so consistently is truly impressive.   Particularly with his Silent Season project, I was introduced to many new producers with some of those then becoming part of my Verdant Recordings family.   

We've exchanged music and thoughts since the early releases of SS but this is the first time i've hosted a set on this cloud so undoubtably, this is a very special moment for me. 

I wanted "Dub Soup" to present music from across and beyond the dub techno spectrum and this set fulfills those aims superbly....    Thank you!

Eighteen months on from his "Left Hand Drive" debut on Bricolage, Wilks returns with his much anticipated, sophomore EP, "A Soul To Borrow".

Any fans of the "Left Hand Drive" EP will be elated to know that the emotive edges and cinematic backdrops are still at the forefront of the Wilks sound but there's a clear evolution at the core of his productions. It's a sound that is hard to pin down. Incorporating elements of ambient, electronica, garage and drum n bass into one evocative whole. Clean production techniques, a broader palette and more experience has elevated Wilks into a new realm of sound. Electronic music with finesse and grit.

There's a more lacquered nuance in the shades of the melodies on show and the basslines run that little bit deeper. Helping to add further to the stirring depth of all six tracks. The percussion feels tight but luxurious as it meticulously opens and expands around the soundscapes. There's a degree of melancholy throughout but the reflection of the shuffling rhythms provides us with a constant sense of moving forward and upwards.

Intricate, delicate, serene and atmospheric. You can hear and feel that this is a project that has had everything poured into it. Heart and soul.

Saturday 11th October, we welcomed @federsen, label boss of @altdub, to Inverted Audio Record Store in Peckham to celebrate the release of cv313 & Federsen 'Altering Dimensions Part One'.

Having recently relocated to the UK after nearly two decades in San Francisco, this session marked Federsen’s first DJ appearance on home soil since moving to the US in 2007.

For the occasion, Federsen delivered an all-vinyl deep dive into dub techno, drawing from a carefully curated selection of records by Maurizio, Echospace Detroit, Deepchord, Chain Reaction, Basic Channel, and Rhythm & Sound. The result was a transportive, dub-driven journey that perfectly captured the timeless pulse of the genre.

Big thanks to everyone who joined us in-store and picked up a copy of Altering Dimensions Part One. For those who missed out, we still have a few copies available.

We're thrilled to welcome Joseph Valentino aka Neglect as our special guest this last weekend of October. Get ready for a sonic journey that swings from energetic highs to moody lows, a mix that takes you on a ride through different vibes.

Neglect is a southern california born, southern arizona based visual artist and musician whose ambient compositions focus on the sparse terrain of living in the desert and how sound translates an environment of wide spaces and harsh extremes. He has been recording and releasing music since 2005 and started mixing records in 1995. His work has appeared on the labels Boomarm Nation, Harmonic Ooze, Adventurous Music, and Shimmering Moods, aside from his own
digital imprint, Neglectsound.

About the mix he said:
"I think of a mix like creating a photo album, a collection of moments in time. Where i was when i heard this song, what year it was, the sense of a season
when i recorded the music, what was happening at that time in my life? Everything begins with one track and then the map starts to take shape. For this episode in particular, it was the sense of spirit in the Millsart track ' Yantra.' I can remember where i was living and the mood of the time when i bought this record in a shop, a feeling of that i can only describe as ancient hope, a timeless desire for discovery. I hope as you listen to this, you will hear a sound, a rhythmic loop, or a chord change that makes something inside you connect with that ancient hope, the curiosity for change."

Deep Breakfast 332 ~ Neglect

Chrysalism 012 is a mix born from a deep attunement to place. Created by Eshie beside the borderlands of San Diego and Tijuana, it reflects a symbiotic relationship between landscape and sound. Drawing from traditional Mexican influences and global rhythmic textures, the mix moves at a slow, steady, and reflective pace.

There’s a drifting melancholy at its heart, balanced by moments of clarity and warmth which create a beautiful duality in this contribution to the series: an ebb and flow of light and shadow, movement and stillness, and ultimately the ups and downs of life. A meditative exploration, inspired by the ocean as a witness, teacher and companion.

Review by Juno: 

Mr Cloudy has a sizable back catalogue on labels like Entropy, Dubwax and Millions Of Moments, and now he's been snapped up by Local Traffic to impart his sumptuous dubby wares across four tracks. "Memoria I" and "Memoria II" let the A-side simmer in a bubbling broth of dub techno ambience, all shimmering chords undergoing heavyweight processing. "Sprayer I" is still immensely mellow, although a little rhythmic pulse creeps its way into earshot via the movement of the gravelly chords, and then "Sprayer II" rounds the EP off with something approaching a beat-oriented excursion through the same billowing clouds of dub techno finery.
