Following on from a solid two-year-run of releases, Berlinite Max Graef rounds of 2015 by embarking on his latest undertaking: The Max Graef Band. The project consists of five guys jamming together on the Dog LP, forthcoming on Graef's own Money $ex imprint. This takes form as his second fuller-length release, after the unparalleled Rivers of the Red Planet album he presented on Tartelet last year.

Dog now sees Graef working in the realm of live instrumentation, but using much of the same musical inspiration found in his former, more digitally inclined productions. All eight tracks are imbued with a free-wheeling emphasis on jazz, funk and soul – uniting the work as a whole rather than singular-functioning songs. It was, therefore, a difficult task to single out a favourite. "Die Elektrische/Der Weisse Vogel Part II" earns its stripes as possibly the most wholehearted "jam" of the bunch. The funk dominates heavily, with the use of the Rhodes piano, Clav, live bass and plenty of bubbling "out-of-this-orbit" sound FX. Packed with floor-shaking energy from start to finish.

Fifty releases in the bag, WOLF Music come correct with a second drop in their 10th year release schedule from French wizard LB aka LABAT, as hotly anticipated as anything Palace could even begin to dream up.
 
‘Scanner’ opens the EP with LB bringing that trademark MPC crunched, sample-heavy style he’s become known for. Dusty jazz loops, distorted percussive hits and vocal cut ups, sounding like they’re straight outta forgotten VHS movies, are laid over the top of a monstrous bassline and emotive strings for a contorted house bomb.
 
Next up ‘Track One’ hits with some Theo Parrish inspired, full frontal synthwork as tight drums and an effect-laden melody are interjected with soulful vocal snippets and a fervent kick. A surefire dancefloor destroyer with a big bass breakdown for good measure.
 
Flip it over for a heads down, late-night ‘Dirty Walk’ with fizzing percussion blending behind sublime Rhodes, overdriven kick drums and that acid infused bass, ready set to be a club staple this year. ‘Shut The World Down For A Moment’ rounds things off, capturing the syncopated mind of LB with a half-time drum loop in the background, slightly off kilter, that he somehow just makes work into a hazy jam.
 
Half century complete and kicking off the next with a bang from the man they call LB aka LABAT.

His 'Garden EP’ is a more machine-led outing than his debut 'Peach Shuffle’, with six expertly crafted cuts aimed squarely at the dance-floor. '727 And Arp Breaks' is as you'd imagine an effectionate nod to two of Dampé's most loved studio tools. The TR-727 and an Arp Odyssey marry dubbed out stabs to some deeply, groovey rolling breaks. However this is not an empty club banger by any means; deftly played jazzy Rhodes keys add more than a touch of soul to the proceedings. Classy stuff.

Straight out of Melbourne, Ryan Berkeley takes on jazz-house group Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchanges self-titled album (originally released in 2018 through Wax Museum Records) and flips Nikita into a hypnotic deep house roller in typical Berkeley fashion. 

Starting off with swirling pads and raw 909 drums the remix takes you into cruise control all the way to the bridge, which tips its hat to the original ZFEX sound and melodies building up and up with flutes and synths taking you to a climactic finish.

Ziggy Zeitgeist has become a staple of the Australian Music scene. Touring and recording with Melbourne Nu-Soul/ future-jazz collective, ‘30/70’ has enabled Zeitgeist to forge new frontiers in improvisation and drum-set application. Zeitgeist has stepped up to the role of bandleader in the debut self-titled album Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange. 

The vision of this project was to create a live band experience that is closely aligned with an extended DJ set, heavily influenced by club culture and transformative festivals where people seek a more transcendent experience- a continuous odyssey, sound and groove with the spirit of live improvisation. The main influences for this project include house, broken beat, and a good dose of 70’s jazz-funk in order to create a unique and cosmic pocket.
