The work of acclaimed L.A. rapper Blu is a hip-hop time capsule perfectly embodying the vibrant culture of the City of Angels.  With no signs of slowing down, the talented artist continues to supply listeners with vivid lyrical imagery over exceptional production. The latest addition to his catalog is "A Long Red Hot Los Angeles Summer Night", a new album entirely produced by Oh No.  The son of singer Otis Jackson and younger brother of beat god Madlib, Oh No has been among the most consistently relevant artists on the independent hip-hop scene since the release of his influential debut album 15 years ago.  Equally skilled as an emcee and producer, Oh No’s storied career has included forming the duo Gangrene with Alchemist, composing the original score for the popular video game Grand Theft Auto, and producing for De La Soul, Mos Def, Action Bronson, Talib Kweli, Danny Brown, Prodigy, and many more.  Now, these two unique and innovative artists are joining forces for an impressive full-length album featuring guest appearances from Abstract Rude, MED, Self Jupiter, Ca$hus King, and more.  With Oh No’s dynamic, soulful production setting the stage, Blu’s effortless flows and streetwise storytelling are on full display. J.Lamotta Suzume - Back In Town

If 2018's WOLFEP046 touched on the burgeoning talent of rising Portuguese star Pedro, this 2019 follow-up delves deep into the accomplished head that rests on those youthful shoulders.

Opening the EP, 'She is' gives a taste of the path Pedro takes with this record. A ten-minute twisting trip, that moves and melds modern jazz leanings with a rugged aesthetic. Off kilter sax flurries, at times gleaming, at others melting, open up the distorted dreams of Pedro's world, as a metronomic double bass attempts to steady the ship. Metallic rides and abrupt percussive hits contrast with the sustained piano chords, further foraging down his surrealist sidewalk.

Take to the flip to find the waltzing 'Faces sob o sol'. A beatless contemporary jazz piece in 3/4 time, where deft piano melodies dance around a looped up, muted guitar phrase and twanging riffs. A simplicity born from only a handful of layers, that in turn creates a free-flowing fluidity through this jazz rabbit hole. 

The most club ready of the cuts, 'Alef' rolls around next, where a funked out bass and psychedelic strummings, marry with crisp cymbals and polished piano playing. Pedro's dream inducing trip still takes its hold though, with distorted, panning, hallucinogenic vocal cries swelling across the airwaves.

Stepping up to close out the EP, Moomin flips 'Faces sob o sol' on its head, laying a rough and ready, liquid DnB rhythm as the basis alongside adding delicate arps and sweeping, atmospheric pads that follow Pedro's original. As hypnotising as its forebearer, but with an ethereal dancefloor orientated radiance.

With hundreds of new producers cropping up, week by week, it's rare to be challenged by something of such high quality from an up-and-coming artist. And with jazz finding a new lease of life across the UK, Pedro's latest output will be sure to find a home on these shores.

‘Cogito Ergo Jam’ meaning, "I think therefore I jam" sums it all up nicely.  Natural Lateral was born organically out of endless and spontaneous jam sessions at the Lazy Robot Studio in North London. Since 2017, Aziz Mustafa, Ozan Nidayi, Oli Arlotto, Malte From and Tim Balasubramaniam, have all been enjoying playing and recording ideas which gave the birth to their first LP on the Social Joy imprint.

‘Cogito Ergo Jam’ weaves together strands of different musical forms and roots. Although much of the band's love for jazz massively influences their music, their open-minded spirit keeps them engaged in other creative fields and venturing into new territory.Creating organic vibes and textures, the music draws from jazz, through to electronic, with deep grooves and mesmerising psych-synth melodies, weaving magic over the top.

The band fuses rhythmic elements from funk & Latin jazz to syncopated odd meter timings drawing inspiration from Azymuth to Soft Machine, Coltrane to Liston-Smith, to name few of their many influences.

On every track of this LP, Natural Lateral’s frenetic energy in the studio is almost palpable, giving these recordings a beautifully intimate insight into the phenomenal vision of the band.

Each track has been handpicked by the artist themselves to represent their unique style in support of a bold charitable cause.  

This year, the Natural Resources Defense Counsel (NRDC) has been selected as the recipient of all proceeds. As one of the world’s most prominent environmental protection organizations, it strives to protect nature in ways that advance the long-term welfare of present and future generations. Tartelet Records is proud to support this important mission with its exclusive end-of-year release.

O fervor criativo de Hugo Oliveira, autor nascido no Porto, quis separar duas
metades de si, que tendem a unir-se com o tempo para expor o seu
crescimento musical e pessoal: Minus na rima e MrDolly nos instrumentais, na
mesma pessoa criaram o álbum “Árvores, Pássaros & Almofadas”.
Os trabalhos anteriores no EP “Distracções” (em 2012) e no álbum
colaborativo “Passeio” em Ollgoody’s denunciavam um ouvido minucioso no
corte e cose, ou seja, na usual técnica de sampling. Agora, mantendo um
olhar atento ao seu redor, Minus é capaz de desenvolver a sua linguagem
duma forma mais aproximada àquilo que sente: nos dois últimos anos houve
um esforço pessoal no sentido de progredir no processo de composição
passando o seu tempo a aprender piano jazz, uma das ferramentas
indispensáveis na sua nova forma de expressão.
De “Beats, Rhymes and Life” a “Árvores, Pássaros & Almofadas”, há um tributo
à arte exploratória do Hip Hop num contexto social e pessoal, criando pontes
rítmicas do boom bap aprimorado de J Dilla à nostalgia cinzenta do Porto.
