THE HOLY SPIRIT (LOOPDIGGERS CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE 2022)

This woman wanted to help me clean, she suggested a plan, I'd spray, she'd wipe. She was 65 pushing 16 and as drunk as it gets. I played along, but with my guard all the way up. By the time we were finished, her sorrowful eyes were lying to me. She claimed to have craved hot dogs ever since she hit the coast. I prepared one and presented it with gruff disinvolvement. Now that she had opened the doors to deceit, we were doomed. She would lie to prolong her stay, but in doing so she would wear her welcome to a thread. Had she never spoken, she could have stayed all night, but embarrassed, she would be forced to raise a shield of confusion. A young man bought cigarettes past her, and she sneered at him. She turned to me and asked my name, "Jim", I lied. "I like you", she lied. She fidgeted. I went about my business.

So one day this guy walks in, passes by the fresh-case and grabs grabs a block a cheese, then he goes to the back and get chips and salsa, but by the time he gets to the counter he's only got the chips and salsa. So thinking quickly, I add a little monologue to the sale: I say “chips, at $1.99, salsa at $2.09 and cheese at $2.69". He looks at me and says, “Look, I don't want any cheese". Well I bite my lip and I say, "So take it out of your pocket". Silence befalls, and there we are, our chests in the air, exchanging 'high noon' glances, when from all the way down at the panty hose, this guy - I swear he was the Incredible Hulk’s twin brother - breaks into a dead on run straight toward us. I’m backing’ up… I’m pressed into the little hooks on the pegboard that holds that Advil and condoms, and the thief thinks I’m scared of him so he fluffs up real good. But by then the Hulk is there and he grabs the accused thief by the hair on the side of his head screams, "GIVE HIM THE FUCKING CHEESE!". Then breaks his nose on the counter right in front of me. Well, cheese appears, and so does blood - like a lot of it - and this fuckin’ guy drags his captured villain kicking and screaming from the store, kicks him a couple a times out on the sidewalk and watches him run away. Well, by the time I got the counter clean, the phone is ringin’ and it’s the Hulk, and he is apologizing. He explains to me that he is an former police officer, (released from the department for excessive force), and he is very sorry, he doesn't know what came over him, but if there is anything he could do for me… I declined politely and hung up. What a fuckin’ day.
