Study Hall Chapter 24

Dopeness! Playing in D'Angelo's first Voodoo band ’99 was one of the biggest musical learning experiences I've ever had. I was enthralled by the organic and intoxicating sounds of the soul, and funk textures. 
 On "Summer Cookout" I was going for a DMV ie. Maryland, DC, Virginia sound that is heavily influenced by the black church and soul music. The song describes a summer day of good Baltimore Seafood, a picnic or BBQ, friends, family, kids playing, cars driving through Druid Hill Park, sexy women, drinks, smiles and laughter in the air. I tried to capture a full warm hot summer's day in the city.
To do this what better ingredient then Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson who is a sonic architect of Vodoo, Adam Blackstone, both Philly's finest, and Baltimore guitarist Darryl Pearson who is one of my hero's from all the Timbaland and Jodeci records. I also employed guitarist Shon Hinton who played with the gospel quartet group the Williams Brother's, my Mentor Roy Hargrove who played on Vodoo, my wife Mashica who knows church music cold, and JK who sang with the soulquarians. On organ I used Timbaland cohort Craig Brockman. Lastly I added my signature Vocoder for the hook and my Jimi hendrix style pedal on my trumpet for a bit of extra grease and emotional cry.


Summer Cookout feat. QuestLove & Roy Hargrove

Mr. Hall holds a B.A. in Music from the University of Central Florida and a Master's of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Louisville. He studied with renowned figures like John Almeida and Grammy-nominated composer John La Barbera. A versatile trumpet player, Mr. Hall has performed with notable musicians, including Miles Davis's soprano saxophonist during his electric period, David Liebman, The 5th Dimension's Florence LaRue, Shelly Berg, Lorraine  Feather, Michael Phillip Mossman, Ray Charles's sideman, David "Fathead" Newman, and Mr. Hall played trumpet in Sam Rivers' Double Big Band World Premiere. His expertise is not limited to a single genre, but spans across Jazz, Classical, Hip-Hop, and R&B, showcasing his adaptability and range.
