I have been thinking about it a lot and I have decided that DUFFDISCO007 is the last bootleg I am going to press to wax. It's been fun and I hope you all enjoyed them but I think it's the right time to stop. (you can order the last in the series here - http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/450211-01.htm)

I do however want to continue re-imagining songs and giving my interpretation of them for you to play and listen to and so i'll be giving the reworks away for free. I have set up a donations page if anyone wanted to help with covering the costs of mastering future tracks as i'd still want the best sound possible as I can't afford to be paying for it all myself.

So keep an eye out for new tracks! donate whatever you feel appropriate, of course you can still download if you can't afford to donate.

Blue skies and late nights, camp fires and cheap delights and whisky drained straight from the jar. In a hammock slung below a sky of dreams and sea of stars lay a pop princess and a hip hop pioneer, arms entwined and eyes locked into each other’s stare they whisper sweet –nothings to each other, “You’re flash” he says “take it slow” she purrs back “and don’t even don’t think about going down under!”
 
A mile or two out to sea, floats what has come to be known as a mega-yacht. Aboard his life like an episode of MTV Cribs but with more parties and less gold-encrusted pool tables. Surrounded by beauties by the bevy and sipping on gin and juice, Duff scans the horizon with his telescope (solid platinum, encrusted with diamonds, built in infa red) and spies young love or a new hope. Smiling to himself he thinks “they look different, younger perhaps at least changed, if not for the better but changed at least which is surely a good thing”. He turns to the girls on the boat, one hand pointing to the shore and the other raising his drink to the sky he shouts “I helped create that”

Following on from the likes of “Backstreet Brit Funk”, “Destination Boogie” and the ever-popular Soul of Disco series Z Records continue to release hi quality compilations filled with lesser known disco, funk and boogie. After the universally well received Under The Influence Vol.1 compiled by Red Greg ZR returns with Vol.2 this time compiled by Paul Phillips.
 
Paul Phillips first got into soul music in the late 1970s with the discovery of radio shows such as Greg Edwards and Mike Allen (Capital Radio), Robbie Vincent (Radio London) and the original soul pirate Radio Invicta. These were discoveries that led him to start his own soul pirate radio station in 1982 and go on to present radio shows on London based pirate radio station Starpoint FM from 1986 to 1991 and as the official on site radio station at the Southport Weekenders during the 1990s.
 
Paul is still involved in radio and currently presents his own show on Solar Radio that features the new soul and soulful house releases of the day mixed with the classic and lesser known soul, funk, jazz, disco and boogie tracks from the last four decades. Paul also continues to travel around the UK and USA in pursuit of collecting soul vinyl, a conviction that this new Under The Influence compilation highlights.
 
The story behind UTI is this, being a seasoned record collector Z label boss Dave Lee (Joey Negro) has made the acquaintance of many of the worlds other vinyl junkies. People that may be unknown to the general public but are hardcore enthusiasts who have built some of the best collections of soul, funk and disco on the planet. The idea of UTI isn't about big name djs but is to give a musical platform to those who have the knowledge to put together a track listing of killer tunes.

As always with Z Records, we've spent time and money to make the masters sound as good as possible so if you're a fan of compilations from BBE or Dimitri From Paris and our own Soul of Disco CD’s then this new series will not disappoint.

Following on from the likes of “Backstreet Brit Funk”, “Destination Boogie” “GoGo Get Down”, the well-received and growing Under The Influence series and the ever-popular Soul of Disco albums, Z Records continue to release high quality compilations filled with lesser known disco, soul, funk and boogie. Now ZR returns with a long overdue Gospel album compiled by David Hill. 

A word from David Hill...

“Gospel music has often followed the prominent trends in secular music, probably in the hope of widening its audience by giving the subject matter a sprinkling of cool. In the 60s it happened with R&B and then funk-flavoured gospel, the 70s brought sweet-soul crossovers, and by 1975 the sounds of early disco had started to permeate the genre. This compilation brings together overlooked gospel gems that have their production rooted in disco and boogie, the sound of the early 80s that followed in disco’s wake. It’s only recently that this music has begun to be appreciated by fans outside of its original target market, and I’m glad to help it finally reach a wider audience.”

David began his music career in 1994 as a member of the Ballistic Brothers, together with Ashley Beedle and Rocky & Diesel of X-Press 2. In 1994 he co-founded the Nuphonic record label, where he managed the creative aspects on almost a hundred releases, with artists including Faze Action, Norman Jay, Andrew Weatherall, Maurice Fulton and David Mancuso. In addition to the record label, Nuphonic also produced the Sony award winning London Xpress radio show for Xfm, which led to various club nights. 

David has also acted as a music consultant to several record companies, one of these being Soul Jazz records, who he produced a series of successful albums for - in 2004 the ‘World of Arthur Russell’ and more then the acclaimed ‘Soul Gospel’ series. He was also production consultant for Auralux, the London based reggae reissue record label, where he worked with Lee Perry, King Jammys, Sly & Robbie and Linval Thompson.

He continues to work on personal projects such as Rootikal, the monthly roots reggae Night, and has a number of reissue and compilation projects currently in production. He is also currently overseeing the production of a book and an accompanying touring exhibition that will showcase Bill Bernstein's photographs of New York nightlife in the late ’70s.
