Mia Koden (@miakoden) first emerged as half of Sicaria Sound but since breaking out alone has established her own musical identity. It draws on her South Sudanese heritage and music from across the African continent and beyond, not least her current surroundings in South London and the city's rich sound system culture. Often operating around the 140BPM mark, she dropped two head-turning tracks ‘Hot Take' and 'I Did’ early last year then debuted on Ilian Tape with a dark and irresistible EP that traverses multiple bass-heavy genres.

Mia does the same with her mix for us this week with, in her words, "bass, percussive, 2step, 140BPM, dubstep, dub, dub techno and breaks" all coming thick and fast at up to 150 beats per minute. It's a breathless 90-minute selection of global body music packed with lively percussion, big on low ends and not afraid to get rhythmically inventive while also dropping in the odd playful vocal from the worlds of grime and r&b. Both technically sound and tastefully assembled, it's a thrilling statement from the vital Koden.

As the Queen of Swords card expresses power and sensuality, this São Paulo via Bogotá B2B celebrates feminine club royalty.

Electronic flashing sounds and perreo vortexes alternate with animal calls to evolve into a heavenly soul absolution.

An extremely fluid mix with a tight rhythm of layered textures, techno floor thrusts in 4/4 sped up like a cardio workout, with a machine-gunning trance bassline merged with Middle Eastern and Latin brushstrokes. A set that is a festival, galloping head-spinning euphoria and a full alphabet of genres from G in guaracha to T in tango.

Anz - Spring/Summer Dubs 2019

British producers and DJs MM (@djdoublem94) and Suda (@sudanim) joined forces at Unsound 2018 to present a brand new collaborative show in a vast, abandoned industrial kitchen in Hotel Forum. Working with music, fog and light, the artists created an immersive experience, combining the sleek futuristic textures and heavy drums of hybrid club music. This exclusive podcast is the first recorded sound of Async Figure available online and a taste of what's to come. Look forward to their China Tour (14 June - Oil, Shenzen; 15 June - All, Shanghai; 22 June - Loopy, Hangzhou) and forthcoming releases.

Next up in our series of recordings live from the booth is Lee Gamble. This one's from a steamy summer night in August during which we tipped our hats to essential UK label Hyperdub in celebration of their 15th birthday. 

In between a stellar opening b2b from local rave heroes Akanbi & DJ Temporary, and leading into a serious beatdown from label boss Kode9 (that started with Burial, nonetheless), Lee Gamble's set exemplified the wild-style, distinctly UK sound the label has been pioneering for well over a decade now.

There's something in the air on special nights like these, and Gamble channeled it to his full advantage, resulting in a set that was nothing short of outrageous. It's a two hour rollercoaster through genre & tempo, spanning sub-destroying bass & grime, dubstep infusions, plenty of breaks and a hefty dose of freaky techno. Full of unpredictable twists and turns while always remaining highly danceable and exceptionally fun, Lee blew the roof off and the minds out with one of the most mental sets we've heard in our two years between the stacks. 

Big love to all steppers in the place for this one, to the Groovy Groovy crew for the support, to Lou for all the technical finesse and the Lee for the tunes.
