Robyn has just completed a short run of festivals in North America, including a headline set at Governors ball. Ahead of these shows she invited some of her favorite artists in dance music from across the globe to remix key tracks from throughout her career, she performed these new versions of the songs live. Circoloco is about as DC-10 as DC-10 gets. From humble beginnings in 1999 the Monday party (which still holds down the same weekly slot today) has become one of the most desirable Ibiza has to offer, irresistible to anyone who likes clubbing in its purist form.

Line-ups overflow with techno talent every week with DJs practically lining up to play; the Circoloco reputation is as strong on the industry side as it is for the clubbers. The careers of Tania Vulcano, Loco Dice and Luciano owe much to their involvement with DC-10 Monday afternoons, which stirred up a buzz that has never died.

Circoloco has a very colourful history, as fancy dress was once an unofficial pre-requisite to attendance. The atmosphere was wild and joyous – a true representation of the ‘anything goes’ ethos of Ibiza. Whilst fewer people dip into the dress-up box these days, the same community prevails of clubbers coming together for sheer joy of music – no frills necessary.

2008/9 saw a difficult time in the party’s progress, as a series of enforced closures and legal issues threatened to cripple it. Circoloco bounced back in 2010 however and has been looking forward ever since. The iconic clown face has since travelled across the globe, throwing Circoloco parties across the continents every year, however DC-10 will always be home.

KVK100 is the first document of the Swedish label Karlovak and consists of SDIK Baby (A1) and Marlboro Light (B1) with original production by label masterminds Mr. Tophat & Art Alfie.

"Established in 2011, it's unclear why it's taken Karlovak Records until now to put out their debut release. Run out of Stockholm by production partners Art Alfie and Mr Tophat, the label creates an avenue for the duo to persue their passion for raw house, away from the steelier, more measured aesthetic of their collectively-managed Junk Yard Connections imprint. 

Loud, coarse kicks and upright hi-hats fuse on "SDIK Baby," with as enticing a bassline as you'll hear all year. Potent snapshots of whirling synth and heartfelt female soul vocals all contribute to the track's wonderfully organic, pumping ride. Devastatingly simple, never once does the record's eight-minute casing feel drawn out or overplayed. On the flip, "Marlboro Light" treads a techier domain, as severe stabs lead the dance with metallic, orchestral vigour. Burial-style vocals—albeit in fully unravelled form—add depth to the track's otherwise stern swing."

KVK200 is the second instalment on the new swedish label Karlovak. This chapter reveals the tracks Crab at The Green Hunter (A1) and No Holdings (Radio Edit) (B1) by label masterminds Mr. Tophat & Art Alfie.

"After a stellar debut release, Mr. Tophat & Art Alfie return with their second EP in as many months on their own Stockholm-based imprint, Karlovak Records. Given KVK100's thumping delivery, the muffled first few minutes of "Crab at the Green Hunter" seem slightly out of place. Eventually the track's rolling, disco-tinged groove is given permission to unfurl, melding jovial mutterings with wholesome kicks. The track is a useful, energetic tool for DJs looking to inject a bit of spark. A playful twist on the "radio edit" suffix, "No Holdings" sounds like it was taped straight from your granddad's wireless. An unidentified disco loop gets put through the Karlovak machine, its brisk, celebratory spirit attached to a muscular, pumping structure. Fun, if somewhat lacking in originality."

KVK300 is the third chapter of the Swedish label Karlovak and consists of Crab At The Green Hunter (A1) and I Want You To See (B1) with original production by label string pullers Mr. Tophat & Art Alfie.

"Mr Tophat & Art Alfie seem uninterested in taking things slowly. Across both their Karlovak and Junk Yard Connections imprints, the Swedish duo has put out four EPs in as many months in 2013, with releases as far ahead as KVK700 already in the pipeline. Despite a slight dip in form on KVK200, their third outing sees the pair back to full-fitness.

At first glance, "Kavolrak" revisits the techier terrain of "Marlboro Lights" (KVK100), albeit it with a grainier inflection. Techno, however, soon turns to house, as an unexpected outburst of summery piano yanks it in the opposite direction. "I Want To See (That You're in Love With Me)" is more upfront, marrying a pumping disco groove with rough kicks and captivating female cries. There's little else to say, other than this, and the accompanying A-side, should go down a treat with DJs and on dance floors."

"It's easy to see why Ricardo Villalobos was so drawn to "I Want You To See (That You're In Love With Me)." Like the Chilean artist, Mr Tophat & Art Alfie's productions mess with dynamics. Look at the track's waveform and you'll notice that its intensity builds slowly. Each drop is bigger than the last. What initially feels like an understated, funk-tinged house track morphs into something enormous. "

KVK800 is the 8th record on Karlovak from label founders Mr. Tophat & Art Alfie. It consists of Limehouse Afternoon (A1) and B. Karlssons Dub (B1). No surprises here, Tophat and Alfie keeps on in the same direction as they left off with infectious groovy party house.

Next up is KVK900 with the much sought after track ‘House Music’. A 14 minute long mesmerizing house journey that’s already been included in Ryan Elliotts Panorama Bar 06 mix. On the B-side you'll find 'The Glitch', a psyched out techbomb stuck in the Karlovak machine.

This release also marks the beginning of the end for this series. The KVK series is coming to an end with KVK1000 being it´s final release.

I first played Panorama Bar on July 7th, 2007 and I have been playing there regularly since. I remember entering the club and feeling all those things everyone feels when they enter Berghain or Panorama Bar for the first time - excitement, joy, tension, fear… almost every emotion. I’m a lot more comfortable playing there now after all that time naturally, but all those emotions are still present in every set.

Panorama Bar has, to me, always stood for quality house music. I still play many of the same records there that I did in the beginning. Of course many new records have come and gone in those seven years of sets, but my musical direction has never changed. The title of the mix is “Panorama Bar 06 - Ryan Elliott”, it is my version of what Panorama Bar sounds like.

I knew I wanted to have roughly 30 to 40 tracks on the mix. Also, because the mix wouldn’t be a physical CD anymore, I wanted to have two EPs of exclusive material, to add a little more of a physical element. I started the A+R process for the exclusive material in February 2014. I received so much good music that we decided to put five tracks on each of the EPs, totaling 10 exclusive tracks. After that I started going through all my records and folders of music to pick the remaining material. In a perfect world, I could have used any song on the mix that I wanted. But, there is the agreement from the tracks’ owners to consider. Saying that, there were only 2 or 3 records that I wanted to use on the mix that I wasn’t able to for one reason or another. 

The most important thing to me was that the mix actually sounds like a night at the club. That it would contain tracks that I’ve played in the club many times. I wanted the mix to contain a few of my Panorama Bar ‘classics’. Because of the new format of the mix, I was a little concerned that some of the older producers wouldn’t be up for giving their agreement for using their tracks, but for the most part I was pleasantly surprised. Besides a few classics, I really wanted a wide range of songs on the mix. Some old, some new and unreleased, some new and released, exclusives, etc.

I don’t view Panorama Bar 06 as just another ‘free downloadable mix’. This mix is available as a fully mastered wave file, includes full artwork and is complimented by two EPs of exclusive material. Vinyl still exists because it's a fidelity and physical thing for DJs. DJs actually use it to do their jobs. We don’t see many tapes or 8-tracks being sold now and the CD will soon go the same way. I made the mix as long as it should be, without thinking about time limitations. We can do that now!

"It’s a match made in dancefloor heaven: Swedish house maestro Mr. Tophat and pop phenom Robyn have come together for Trust Me, a three-tracker of dark disco and luscious grooves that only an inspired pairing such as this could conceive of. With each track going well beyond the nine-minute marker, Trust Me is the artistic culmination of two artists joining together in the studio and putting pure inspiration to tape, resulting in some of the loosest and most intriguing music either has made in their careers. 

Although Robyn and Mr. Tophat have known each other personally for nearly a decade, the first time they professionally crossed paths was last year, when the latter contributed a few remixes of material from Robyn’s EP with La Bagatelle Magique, Love Is Free. “I wasn’t making my own music at the time, so he forced his way into my studio and said, ‘We’re going to make music now,’” Robyn recalls the beginnings of the pair’s creative process. “It was really nice for me to be submerged into his world and lose myself in something that wasn’t my own.”

Trust Me is certainly situated in Mr. Tophat’s world. The Stockholm-based Junk Yard Connections owner and Karlovak co-founder has spent most of this decade releasing a brilliant stretch of side-long singles with production pal Art Alfie. Those singles’ dense, lovingly handcrafted club vibes are perfectly realized on this EP, with some subtle tweaks to the winning formula—a rich intricacy embedded within a deeper-than-deep sound perfect for peak-hour dancing and 3 AM comedown communions alike. 

The EP also represents a logical progression for Robyn, calling back both to Love Is Free’s dancefloor abandon and the darkly shaded electro-pop of her 2014 collab with Röyksopp, Do It Again. The title track and “Right Time” shuffle and slither with a jet-black slickness as Robyn toasts and intones over the rhythms, while closing cut “Disco Davato” provides an effervescent finale, with zipping samples and crisp hi-hats providing plenty of upwards propulsion. 

Joining Robyn and Mr. Tophat in the studio was Abba’s original drummer, Per Lindvall, who the latter met through a friend at National Swedish Radio. Lindvall lends Trust Me’s tracks a crisp, live feel amidst its sample-based confines—as does bassist (and Per’s brother) David Lindvall, who previously contributed on sessions for Love Is Free. “He can do anything,” Robyn gushes on Lindvall’s contributions.

These contributions only serve to strengthen Trust Me’s disco bonafides, as does Robyn and Mr. Tophat’s appreciation of the genre. “House music is something I’ve been listening to since I was 14,” Mr. Tophat wistfully remembers. “The house songs I like most is house that’s clearly sample-based in disco. That’s the house music that’s really attracted me. For me, it came really natural to discover what’s behind these samples.” “You can hear disco in all club music,” Robyn continues. “It’s the base of so much music that we listen to, and it’s one of the most influential music styles ever. You can hear it everywhere. Disco’s always been in my world.”

And disco will continue to be in her world, as Trust Me far from represents the end of Robyn and Mr. Tophat’s partnership. “We both have ideas of what we can do,” Mr. Tophat says on the pair’s continued work on new material. “There’s a lot of unopened doors.” For now, we can be thankful that they’ve opened us up to their sleek, lovely world on Trust Me—a collection of pure club music, streaked equally with mystery and unbridled ecstasy."

MR. TOPHAT

Born in Sweden in 1990 this guy is a true Stockholm original. Having had more than two dozens of his own productions released it’s almost an understatement to say that Rudolf Nordström aka Mr. Tophat has a real passion for dance music. 
This has led him to start his well-reputed label Karlovak, co-run with Art Alfie since 2011. “House music for club nights that most certainly can’t end” is how the founders describe it, which gives you an idea of what we are talking about. 

Mr. Tophat is also in charge of his own imprint Junk Yard Connections founded in 2009, a label operated with the motto 'strictly limited, no repress' – by saying that it is not much of a surprise these records sell out fast. In terms of Tophat’s own productions he ended 2016 with outputs on labels Public Possession and Music for Freaks, and earlier in the year also working with fellow Swede pop star Robyn, remixing two singles, being part of her live band and together releasing the single “Trust Me EP“ for Norwegian label Smalltown Supersound. 

Mr. Tophat is an interesting contradictive artist to follow - audibly as well as visually. Nordström moves confidently and freely between sonic worlds, never compromising, instead continuously building and strengthening his own unique foundation in sound.
