Old Breed asked me to make a Coltranesque improvisation for him to play along with (talk about setting the bar impossibly high!). It seemed such a mad idea to put the drums on after the sax that I was really intrigued. As a sax player I've become used to making my part fit with other people's musical ideas...that's part of the job...so having someone respond to my creation instead was interesting, fun and liberating. 

I had the idea of using Somewhere Over the Rainbow as a departure point because I read somewhere it was the world's favourite song and I liked the idea of playing a song that well known and liked and making it like no-one had ever heard it before. I had a 100 bpm funk groove in mind when I recorded the sax part, but Old Breed took it way beyond that in all sorts of ways. He's done a brilliant job. His playing is dynamic, sensitive, intuitive, musical and always exciting....makes me sound like I know what I'm doing!
