Noizz Factor - Eyjafjöll

This is a basic i-phone recording taken from a rehearsal session for above Indian/Irish arrangement for a live performance commission on 29th August, 2015, Galway, Ireland.

It is a collaboration between Indian singer and piano player Fezin Edathadathi based in Galway and traditional Sean Nos singer Seosamh O Flaithearta from Connemara.
We arranged two pieces of music, one a classical Indian piece of music called Chaliye and the other an Irish song An raibh tú ar an gCarraig (Were you on the rock)sung in Sean Nos style (Old Irish singing style). 

I wanted to fuse the two and show the comparisons between the styles of singing. The ornamentation used in Sean Nos singing is similar to the quarter notes used in some Indian styles. Some of these styles use 24 note scales rather than our traditional Western scale of 12 notes.

An raibh tú ar an gCarraig (Were you on the rock) was a 'code' song used during English occupation of Ireland. The singer would sing 'did you see my love today at the mass rock?' If the answer was yes then it was safe to attend gatherings; if the answer was no, then it was not.

This piece was commissioned and played live for the Indian Ambassador to Ireland on the 29th August 2015 at the unveiling of the Indian Stone at the Circle of Life Commemoration Memorial garden in Salthill, Galway, Ireland.

If you ever find yourself on your travels to Ireland, it is well worth visiting this beautiful garden. It was designed, and is maintained by Martina and Denis Goggin in commemoration of all organ donors worldwide.
