Immortal

“As an astronaut, especially during launch, half of the risk of a six-month flight is in the first nine minutes.” -Chris Hadfield

“Launch” began as a simple c- minor theme accompanied by an ostinato pattern. Unable to breathe further life into the piece, it sat dormant in my sketchbook for months. When scrolling through my twitter feed on November 17th, I found an image of three astronauts of Expedition 50/51 (Thomas Pesquet, Peggy Whitson, Oleg Novitskiy), tweeted by Canadian astronaut and icon, Chris Hadfrield. He embedded a link which took me to NASA’s feed of the launch and video highlights. I found myself watching religiously that day, too fascinated and anxious to look away. I imagined the emotional and physical journey that a person aboard such a strong, yet fragile vessel would experience in the short period between being firmly grounded on earth and floating weightlessly in space; immense fear, cloaked in tremendous excitement, awe and wonder.

It was herein that I found new inspiration to revisit this seemingly old idea.
