KPFK Conversation Piece...You Have To Move! Human Rights Watch Report @ LA CAN

What it is!!
A coalition of tenants, housing rights advocates, public interest lawyers and community based organizations formed a coalition called Keep LA Housed with the goal of protecting tenant rights by the of way of strengthening the Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance for the City of Los Angeles, improving the Los Angeles Rent Stabilization Ordinance for rent control, and ensuring the Right to Counsel for low income renters to name a few of the ongoing actions by Keep LA Housed.  

I covered two of their many press conferences hosted by this coalition upholding the Housing Movement.  Hear some of the voices from Keep LA Housed saying housing is a human right and that no one should EVER be evicted without legal representation. This rally took place on the South Lawn of Los Angeles City Hall.

Later hear about the Pickle-ball craze in the City of Inglewood, which is a combination of tennis, badminton, ping pong and racquetball and is currently one of the fastest growing sports in America! KPFK Conversation Piece...Housing Rights Rally and Inglewood Pickle Ball

During our KPFK Membership Fund Drive, we have a special Black History Edition of Conversation Piece with a speech you may not have heard as much as the I have a Dream speech. 

This speech was given in Los Angeles on March 16, 1968, less than three weeks before Rev Dr Martin Luther King Junior was assassinated.  The setting is a house in the Hollywood Hills with a group of artists who were concerned about the war in Vietnam. Dr. King is introduced by one of the artists there, novelist, playwright, and poet James Baldwin.  KPFK was there to record the event and Pacifica Archives has curated it. The recording aired on KPFK on April 4, 1968.

What it is!  Friday,June 6, 2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents invaded Los Angeles.  They used administrative civil warrants to arrest students, hotel workers, cooks, landscapers, and construction workers.  Invading schools and workplaces demanding that any Angeleno who wasn’t sufficiently Caucasian produce their papers.  Taking them away in unmarked vans, without judicial process.  Of course, the people of LA wouldn't stand for this, and mass protests flooded out downtown Los Angeles.  The news, federal government, and even some members of the city council lied about these peaceful protests being riots, but the video shows that the only ones rioting were the LAPD.  Today we are going to speak to a community member who was there all week, and later we will be joined by Matyos Kidane to explain the strategy behind these lies...Welcome to Conversation Piece.

KPFK Music To Resist By Edition of Conversation Piece with WRAP Members

Unhoused constituents reported waking up to a heavy turnout of LAPD officers, just before an encampment sweep on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025. They said they were lined up and detained, before sanitation workers had shown up, many of them issued citations for LA's anti-camping law 41.18. 

Some of those constituents confronted and sought answers from LA City Council member Eunisses Hernandez's staffer, Eric Ares, who identified himself as the office's district director (he has served as the office's Director of Housing and Homelessness).
