Murat is a New York-based composer and mastering engineer, and the founder of the music label Geryon. Marek makes hardware techno as Muxer, works on AI-driven synthesis with a research cluster in Hong Kong, and designs interactive systems for an audio scenography agency in LA.

Northern Irish, London based musician Michael Speers composes and performs music as a temporal and worldly extension of himself and the tools at his disposition. As a percussionist by training, Michael extends his contact and interplay with resonant objects through instrumentalised amplification and feedback, employing signal processing to articulate the almost tangible constitution of sonic material as structural, nearly cellular, microscopic entities. Following his integral presence in C.A.N.V.A.S. performance events since their inception and his recent participation in the Cipher compilation, xtr’ctn is released in September 2019 as a debut solo LP for both the artist and the label.

Dehumanised black metal screams, attributed to seagulls - specifically “recorded in Ramsgate, 06.2017”. It’s the inhuman that concerns us here, or our complex relationship with non-human entities and abstractions. Extracting is a process. By integrating recorded and found sound phenomena, treated as profane and material entities, Michael meticulously arranges sound objects into composition, upholding a fidelity to their emergent properties. Most of these objects become seemingly un-referential, although occasionally you arrive at a near-recognisable sound source or environment, disrupting the invitation towards a total loss of a sense of self.

This is fictional music - it is of and for a world that doesn’t exist. Although presenting sound with sincerity and integrity, without allusion to linear narrative, Michael's materialistic approach is transcended by the sensitivity of his composition. In a sense, it comes after both feeling and expression, as the subdued emotion of a person attempting to reach beyond their own affective limitations. It reaches out without ever really touching anything. Yet for all it’s clinical reduction, there are moments of unhindered emotion which strike harder for their arrival from such a seemingly nonhuman place.

“xtr’ctn” fails in reaching a point of immanent abstraction - a flatline horizon. It arrives instead at the outer brim of a sensory dam, where organic glitches from the extremities of our perception have spread - like sonic cataracts - intercepting the flow of our auditory awareness. In its state of fiction, “xtr’ctn” acts as a flag for the C.A.N.V.A.S. community, pitched as a marker of our enacted existence, weathered though unliving. To follow this signal to its depth is to accept the unknown - you only follow, knowing no alternative.

Lisbon-based Bruno Silva enacts pure voodoo with extended, restless LinnDrum workouts that take Prince’s distinctive LM-1 signatures as a starting point for loose-limbed tribal jams that flow with the colour of the Brazilian carnival and the rhythmic psychedelia of hardcore jungle.

The title ‘Parada’ cannily nods both to Prince’s ‘Parade’ album and the percussion of carnival parades, speaking to a plurality of polyrhythms in a tradition of fusion music that seeks to meld myriad forms of communal, ritualistic and ecstatic music - not a million miles from the bare carnival funk of ‘Parade’s’ ’New Position’.

In six parts ranging from extended runs of drumkit-falling-down-stairs to nimble junglist mutations and rapid, darting concisions, Serpente spells out a heavily intoxicating and intuitive sort of rhythmic psychedelia that lives up to a broad palette of influences ranging from Haitian voodoo ceremonies and central African drum circles, through to the Sun Ra Arkestra and Alan Silva’s Celestial Communion Orchestra, via Keith Hudson’s dub transcendence, and the rude modernism of UK rave and virulent styles currently coming from Lisbon ghettos on the Príncipe label.

In attempting to untie and unite these worldly references, an asymmetric percussive friction and hypnotically unresolved tension naturally emerges from Serpente’s flux of machine made patterns. It’s there in the restlessly gnashing, swingeing brilliance of ‘Nivel de Chama’ and the exceptional mix of detuned Linn drums and reticulated jungle breaks in ‘Trama’, while the B-side probes this idea in three subtly agitated, but more space-out ’Símbolo’ parts, and finally with a sublime tension between his twitchy percussive saccades and celestial synth pads in ‘Nivel de Cinza.’

‘Parada’ is pure body music in a minimalist/maximalist way that acknowledges both physical and spiritual needs, and requires a dancing or thinking body in order to properly unlock its purple magick.

"Like entering a palatial hall of mirrors, LXV’s A Screen Memory opens with a baroque, choral synthesis. There are seraphs atop gilded plinths, chandeliers overhead. You’re ushered through an ornate, jeweled backdoor, and outside, it’s a beautiful bright day. Down a mossy path the calm patter of rain begins. A brook gurgles. There are voices too, though indiscernible. You arrive at a well brimming with crystalline data. But then a fog descends from behind. And down you go.

The place you arrive in appears familiar, but something is off. Strange transmissions travel the air. Anomalies all around. Paradox reigns. Notions such as backwards and forwards lose meaning as do sender and receiver. The landscape is littered with softwares, broken bells. Looking up, there, some things in the shrouded distance: sonic objects, unidentified, glowing, you squint to get a good look, but before you can comprehend, the brain change concludes, and your paranoia turns to coursing pleasure.

Caustics, formed as an outlet for our group of artists working with experimental sound, the label has secretly evolved as a platform for art projects and a physical space where many of us live.
We always want to articulate what we are doing. Our organization started as a common label, but along the way we began to notice that it was irrelevant, the music industry had become too institutionalized and corporate for us to prosper and maintain our model, and we did not want to be another collective party. Labels are getting a lot less strong as cults in an age where everything has to be chewed to be consumed, People Mover is all about that; creating an information ephemera is not a final product.
