YOUTH host Significant Other’s glum but resilient meditation on love and loss, a broodingly therapeutic debut album that straddles IDM and industrial Ambient signatures, reminding us of work from Bola to Jay Glass Dubs, Spectre to classic late night Rob Hall mixes.

Sharing a different side of his sound to that heard on club-cut 12”s for Spe:c, Oscilla Sound and anno over the past few years, Significant Other here dwells on feelings that “emerged from moments of extreme passion and pain", patching new and archival material to work thru a mental fug of ambient noise laments and crankily dubbed out illbient lines of thought.

The pacing is stygian and the atmosphere near still, betraying a depth of suppressed emotion that he processes over the album’s eight tracks. ‘Demonology’ evokes a hash haze contemplation with its patina of Burial-esque vapours and incidental crackle, and ‘The Future Doesn’t Exist’ taps into a classic vein of screwed NYC downbeats a la Spectre, showing off a killer instinct for crushed hip hop drums also explored on the weighty swang of his ‘Love Beat.’ 

‘Residuum’ doesn't fall into outright doom, preferring to skirt the event horizon of a black hole and keep the chin bobbing up with the vulnerable yet hopeful tones of ‘Pendant’,  also in the Loren Connors-esque midnight peal of ‘Drifting In The Third Person’ and the elegiac closing sequence ‘Perpetual Care’, with its piano and string led coda.

Deadbeat and Om Unit combine forces to explore their shared love of dubbed-out electronics.

Starting a thread from Montreal to Bristol, this mini LP is rooted in the tradition of dub and techno, but with tinges of roots and acid as well as the etheric ambience they are both known for.

Root, Stalk, Leaf and Bloom is contemplative but heartfelt, with a sense of momentum and positive purpose.

Al Wootton returns to ZamZam with two more stunning sides of deep dubwise for late and later. It’s been a prolific year and a half since his last ZamZam, with multiple killer 12”s and an LP on his own Trule label, a four-tracker for Livity Sound, and two thrilling EPs as Holy Tongue alongside drummer Valentina Magaletti. Informed equally by UK dub, garage, roots reggae and techno, Al Wootton creates unique amalgams that always hit, and this 7” adds to that legacy in fine style.  

‘Every Knee Shall Bow’ opens with swimming percussion and echoing pads, ramping the tension before dropping into a potent, simmering 4/4 powerhouse, a perfect marriage of steppers and dub techno, at once visceral and cerebral, up front & deep, clear yet heavily atmospheric. Galloping drums, massive reverb splashes and FX, a wide-eyed drop into space… pure fire for the dancers. 

B Side 'Every Tongue Confess,’ drops the tempo down to 120, pulling us into pure heartbeat territory with drum kit, bass guitar, live percussion and keys all played by the artist and dubbed hands-on-desk style. A deep internal grounation in the timeless Count Ossie to Rhythm & Sound continuum, this is true healing music whether on a proper Sound or at home on the hi-fi.

Rushing us headlong into a vorticist maelstrom of hard-edged drum stutter and polychromatic synth fragmentation, Sansibar sophomore long-player for Kalahari Oyster Cult - “Sans Musique” - tackles the very essence of post-trancey, breaks-loaded UK blends with unabashed joy to wreak havoc on his path. Throughout seven tracks oozing burnt kerosene and depleted uranium residue merged with a hint of sacred incense, Sansibar deploys his extra-wide vision for the present and future of dance music.

“Scully” attacks pedal to the metal, hi-intensity bass onslaughts and knee-buckling breaks roaring as the groove slings us at bullet-speed into a hot, narrow barrel of floor-focused aggression. Fusing rattling DnB engineering with Goa trance motifs, “Force of Equilibrium” showcases Sansibar’s hybrid attachment to functionality and headspace fractalisation. Hi-velocity rimshots, pep vox samples and alien basslines blazing, “NRJ” eases us into a shape-shifting network of underground tunnels dwelled by shady raving creatures, harking back to Prodigy’s early wares and subsequent offshoots of the 90s era.

One to bend your mind to, “Teal’c” taps into an even darker vein with its fast-cascading hats and von Oswald-ian dub whirlwind set against a surgically laid-down, unstoppable EBM bass comber. Jagged and oneiric to the finest extent, “Send It” peeps at prime Hokusai and Photek material in its first stretch, slowly making room for further spacious liquid junglism as bars run by. Cranking the 2-step/garage power levels up a notch, “Fantasmas” sends us spinning into orbit right away, while the LP’s closing track “Aurora” takes us on a languidly serene voyage of a finale, tempo slowed-down and suave trip-hop flavours exuding with increased sensitiveness.

The psy, the rave, the sounds, the species, the food of the gods. Alpha Juno, Cyclon 303, mutable instruments and ideas collated, N4's modern mysticism to harness the Earth as a being of sound. Visions: A Benefit Compilation for Artsakh is a compilation album with music from a wide range of electronic and dance music artists from the West Coast, East Coast, and beyond.

The album is produced by a community of artists with the intention to raise funds for the recent displacement and violence towards 100,000+ Armenians from the Republic of Artsakh (also known as Nagorno-Karabakh) - a de facto self-governed autonomous region with an Armenian population indigenous to Artsakh. The displaced families and those who have no other option but to return to their war-torn towns are in need of housing, medical, psychiatric support, food, and basic essentials.

*This is an indigenous struggle, and as ethnic-supremacist ideologies are on the rise across the world, we wanted to have a project that stands in solidarity with indigenous people’s right to self-determination and existence, and help from here in a small way.

On September 27, 2020, a large-scale military offensive was unprovokedly launched against the Republic of Artsakh and Armenia by the authoritarian regime of Azerbaijan, backed by Turkey. Armenian civilians, settlements, and civilian infrastructures including schools and churches were continuously bombarded for 45 days with drones, aerial attacks, internationally outlawed cluster bombs and white phosphorus munitions. Several thousands of lives were lost, hundreds still in captivity, and over a hundred thousand Armenians displaced after 70% of Artsakh’s territories were taken away. Currently, ancient Armenian historical, religious, and cultural sites in Artsakh are being destroyed, contributing to the years of cultural genocide by Azerbaijan’s petro-oligarchic regime. This is an indigenous struggle, and as ethnic-supremacist ideologies are on the rise across the world, we stand in solidarity with indigenous people’s right to self-determination and existence.
