Characteristic features of a Much Better, Thank You ;-) song are varieties in metrical structure as well as in mood, always kept together by Heidi´s edgy voice. It changes from soft and delicate to strong with slicing heights, likewise Liz Fraser or Kate Bush, always expressive and independent. Time- and self-critical lyrics unite with a delicate sound and an often unusual song structure.
The song „Concrete Memories“ goes deep into the commemorative culture of Auschwitz. It was first released in 2015 and drew attention of the radio community. The single track was on air many times. Another song, „Lullaby“, seeks for sympathy towards refugees. These more political songs join with songs about everyday life of stressed contemporaries -and suddenly a love song gets in. „The music mirrors our experiences and our despair, creating songs is our way to cope with life.“
The sometimes acoustical, mostly electrical guitars emphasise this playfully, bursting with energy or suddenly softly singing, sometimes a violin takes over.
If you like Poems for Laila, PJ Harvey, Feist or Patty Smith you will go for Much Better, Thank You ;-) and their tunes, which will stick in mind. The original and sometimes surprising appearance of the music enters straight and catchy.
The debut album includes thirteen songs written by Heidi and Jens Engel. They were recorded on several occasions in a studio run by Marcus Praed (Tito and Tarantula, Cliff Barnes and the Fear of Winning).

Hot Deal – A Song of The Shirt

Der Song setzt sich kritisch mit der Textilindustrie auseinander, bzw. mit der Frage, wie Textilien "konsumiert" werden, obwohl wir um die Umstände wissen, unter denen große Teile unserer Kleidung produziert werden.
 
Der Impuls zu dem Song liegt schon einige Jahre zurück: In dem Brand in der Textilfabrik Rana Plaza in Bangladesch. Im Song selbst geht es allerdings nur indirekt um den Brand; eher geht es um Kritik an der Jagd nach dem günstigsten Schnäppchen. Das seltsame Hobby „Shoppen Gehen“ wird in Verbindung gebracht mit den Arbeitsbedingungen in den heutigen Textilfabriken in Fernost.
 
Das Problem ist ja nicht neu, sondern wurde seit Beginn der industriellen Textilproduktion nur verlagert. Um das zu verdeutlichen wird im Song-Text aus einem Gedicht von Thomas Hood von 1843 zitiert. Das Gedicht heißt „Song of The Shirt“, was ja auch gleichzeitig der Untertitel des Songs ist. Da heißt es: "Stitch! Stitch! Stitch! In poverty, hunger and dirt.” Am Ende des Songs wird der Konsument dann sarkastisch aufgefordert: “Go on whistle that tune while you go hunting for a snip of another must have shirt.”

Der Song wurde schon zwei Mal zuvor bei Studio-Sessions aufgenommen, ohne dass die Band wirklich zufrieden war. Beim dritten Mal, beim Studioaufenthalt Anfang 2019, kam dann die Idee sich dem Song mittels einer Drum-Maschine nochmal neu zu nähern.
Im Studio von Marcus Praed (Tito und Tarantula, Cliff Barns and the Fear of Winning) gab es so eine alte, schon fast historische Dr. Böhm Compact-Orgel. Auf der wurde dann einen Bossa Nova-Rhythmus gewählt und mit so einem typischen Alleinunterhalter-Sound als Basetrack unter den Song gelegt.
Bei der Akkordfolge des Verse handelt es sich um eine andalusische bzw. spanische Kadenz, mit der man irgendwie spanische Gitarren assoziiert. Im ersten Teil von Hot Deal startet es dann auch entsprechend. Auf der zweiten Strophe wird eine mit E-Bow gespielte E-Gitarre eingeführt. Neben der Böhm-Orgel ist das der zweite Signature-Sound des Songs.
Hot Deal ist zweigeteilt; die zweite Hälfte beginnt mit einem „stille Tal“; so nennt die Band die ruhige Passage in der Mitte des Songs. Zwei E-Gitarren simulieren Nähmaschinen und steigern sich fast unerträglich, bis die E-Bow-Gitarre dann die Spannung löst und die Melodieführung übernimmt.
Ganz am Ende bleibt ein dissonanter Nachhall, der mit dem Text des wiedereinsetzenden Gesangs korrespondiert, der zu „robbing“, statt „shopping“ wechselt.

Eigentlich ist Secret Service der neue Bond Song - nur dass James das noch nicht weiß.

Die Angst vor zuviel Überwachung ist allgegenwärtig, bei gleichzeitig recht sorglosem Umgang mit den sozialen Medien. Was geben wir von uns preis, wie wollen wir wahrgenommen werden und wen interessiert es wirklich? Schützt uns Überwachung? Schadet sie uns?

Zufällig fiel die Produktion des Videos in die Corona-Krise, passender hätte es aber auch nicht sein können, denn als Band kommunizieren wir in der Krise nur über soziale Medien. Wer liest und schneidet alles mit? Gefällt es Euch? Verfolgt ihr uns? Könnt ihr noch folgen?

The fear of too much surveillance is omnipresent, while at the same time we carelessly use social media. What do we reveal about ourselves, how do we want to be perceived and who really cares? Does surveillance protect us? Does it harm us?

By accident the production of this clip happened to be during Covid-19-crisis but it couldn't have been more fitting. In the crisis all band members have only been able to communicate online. Who reads and records everything? Do you like it? Do you follow us? Are you still able to follow?

Much Better, Thank You is an Art Folk Band from Germany. Airplays and reviews show a growing nationwide perception. The music is a mixture between Indie-Folk and Kraut-Rock. Characteristic features of a MBTY song are varieties in metrical structure as well as in mood, always kept together by Heidi´s edgy voice. It changes from soft and delicate to strong with slicing heights, likewise Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins) or Kate Bush, always expressive and independent. One can peg Heidi´s lyric soprano as elfish; it is extraordinary but expressive, changing between fragile and punchy.
Time- and self-critical lyrics unite with a delicate sound and an often unusual song structure. The songs are tricky, sometimes straight and combine the feeling of a mourning dance with the power of rock. If you like Poems For Laila, PJ Harvey, Feist or Patti Smith you might also like the songs of MBTY and the melodies which won't leave you for several days. This is really independent, with the first tune anyway catchy. Unusual, but for shure never boaring.
