...This music mix focuses on my composition teacher, Cuban-born US-American composer Tania León (then at Brooklyn College / CUNY Graduate Center). Tania speaks in the program notes for Scourge of Hyacinths about connecting with the character of The Mother and “the important women in my life as I grew up,” her mother and grandmother, as that character calls on Yemanja. That’s relatable to me, too, thinking to my mother and all the time I spent with my grandmother - and Tania is one of the figures I often think back on not only in my musical work but how to approach the world. (The connection to Wole Soyinka is meaningful, too, as I got to know some of the Nigerian Ogoni dissident scene in the 90s including Ken Wiwa, son of the slain Ken Saro-Wiwa, whom Soyinka wrote eloquently about.) It’s also nice to get to include the Louisville Orchestra and Lawrence Leighton Smith, who I grew up listening to in my hometown.

Even after the Pulitzer and other accolades, I’m glad for any chance to advocate for Tania’s musical voice to those who don’t know it. These varied recordings are also all available digitally for purchase (most on Bandcamp), so I hope it leads to more support for those musicians.

Episode 9 (٠٧) features a special original sound piece by guest artist Peter Kirn. Peter is a Berlin-based composer and artist of Lebanese-American heritage. He teaches electronic music and creative technology; he’s a journalist and the writer behind cdm.link. He’a also regularly a host of collaborative performance labs, including most recently collaborations with Sonic Territories and MUTEK. His music is available on various labels including his own Establishment. We had the chance to meet and collaborate during the Sounds of Places residency, and it’s an honor to welcome him to the show with this one hour sound walk tracing textures from Jordan to Palestine and Lebanon.

In Peter’s own words:
« This adaptation for radio traces a path from the King Hussein Bridge through the West Bank, Bethlehem, and occupied Jerusalem, and to the seaside and port in Beirut. It’s partially performed, partially mixed, including reworkings of performances at Manifest:IO and Riwaq Berlin. Two tracks included come from the Palestinian National Archives (thanks to Basel Naouri). Otherwise, original material and field recordings, including recordings made as part of a residency with Wonder Cabinet Bethlehem working in the Cremisan Valley, and additional recordings by Sofia Lambrou and Ibrahim Owais. This comes as a plea to act, to stop the violence across the region. »
