They aren't exactly something that can easily slip down the back of the sofa or our of your pocket when you check Facebook on your phone for the umpteenth time in an hour, just in case. No, to find that your Brazilians have gone missing is very irresponsible indeed.

However, after a little while you might just hear a little rumbling of something special in your ear. After a solid nine minute spell of your eardrums being thrilled, you realise that your Brazilians weren't missing after all but were safely tucked away within your lugs, sprouting all kinds of aural goodness. Something that sounds just a little bit like this...

Higher Authorities - Colour

The second music to be shared from the #N/A album, this edit of 12-minute closing track '#5' demonstrates the trio's uncanny ability to take the standard power trio set-up of guitar-bass-drums and produce all manner of otherworldly sounds. With a constant bass pulse and metronomic hi-hat keeping the horror movie tension of the track taut, whipcrack rimshots and spiralling shards of barely identifiable guitar noise disappear into a black hole of dub delay. This is ritualistic trance music for the dancefloor. 

There's definite parallels to be drawn here with producer Adrian Sherwood's other contributions to the 'metal dance' genre: re-assembling Einstürzende Neubauten's "Yü-Gung" in 1985; helping Ministry reinvent their sound from synth-pop to menacing Electronic Body Music on the Twitch album (inspiring one half of Glasgow DJ duo Optimo in the process); working with seminal Sheffield synthesists Cabaret Voltaire; kickstarting Nine Inch Nails' career with his production work on the classic Pretty Hate Machine; even his own music as part of Tackhead - cut-up fragments of newsreels, noise and cavernous beats. Whilst Nisennenmondai's music is a world removed from these 80s industrial experiments, #N/A demonstrates Sherwood masterfully applying his dub production skills to another kind of metal machine music.

This month Carhartt WIP Radio is bringing you a show by Adrian Sherwood and his legendary label On-U Sound. During a career of more than 30 years, Sherwood produced and remixed artists such as Lee "Scratch" Perry, Primal Scream, Depeche Mode or Einstürzende Neubauten amongst others. His label On-U Sound, formed in 1980, is worldwide known for cutting edge releases that are rooted somewhere between dub, experimental, Reggae, Post-punk and electronica. Furthermore many On-U Sound releases greatly influenced the sounds of today like ambient and techno. Recently many On-U Sound records of artists and collectives like African Head Charge, Singers & Players or Bim Sherman got re-released and Sherwood himself produced, dubbed and released contemporary bands like the Japanese trio Nisennenmondai. For Carhartt WIP Radio Adrian Sherwood tuned in a mix that grooves between the past, present and future of On-U Sound.

Carhartt WIP Radio May 2016: Adrian Sherwood - On-U Sound Radio Show

A metal dance deconstruction of a Prince classic, recorded in 1987.

Adrian’s mid-80s productions with the Tackhead axis were some of the most innovative of the period in their sheer sonic extremity - creating huge walls of sound with skull-crushing beats, a Dadaist collage of vocal samples, and instruments pushed way into the red. Distortion became another colour in his sonic palette, just as echo, reverb and parametric EQ had been to his dub productions. These records caught the ears of musicians from the emerging second wave industrial scene - an international affair taking inspiration from earlier groups like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire but applying it to tracks intended for a dancefloor or rock club. The hybrid would be dubbed ‘electronic body music’, and Sherwood very much had a hand in shaping the sound, being invited to work with the likes of Einstürzende Neubauten, Ministry, KMFDM, Nitzer Ebb and Nine Inch Nails.

Pankow were from Florence, Italy and Adrian made their acquaintance after producing fellow hometown act Rinf (also featured on this comp). Pankow's early synth and drum machine excursions such as “Das Vodkalied” have become a seminal touchstone for modern techno producers such as Helena Hauff in recent years, with their heavier late-80s productions with Adrian Sherwood being championed as metal dance classics by On-U compiler Trevor Jackson. They also ended up having their records released in the states by Wax Trax!, and worked on two albums with Adrian, Freiheit Für Die Sklaven(Freedom For The Slaves) and Gisela. This irreverent deconstruction of a Prince song is a highlight of their time working together and appeared in extended form on the humorously titled EP, Pankow Play The Hits Of The Nineties.

An unreleased gem from the On-U archives that features on the forthcoming 'Sherwood At The Controls Volume 2: 1985 - 1990' compilation.

Born Lloyd Jarrett Vincent in Westmoreland, Jamaica, the re-christened Bim Sherman was a star of the 70s roots reggae era on the island, his sweetly melodic voice adorning classic tunes such as “Love Forever” (later covered by the New Age Steppers), “Tribulation” and “Mighty Ruler”; often issued on his own imprints such as Scorpio or Red Sea. Adrian Sherwood became a fan whilst importing records for the aforementioned Pama record shop, and when Bim moved to the UK in the early 80s he was invited to join Adrian’s burgeoning crew of singers & players. He stayed part of the On-U family up until his untimely death in 2000, making guest appearances on numerous releases, and cutting essential solo LPs such as Across The Red Sea and Miracle. He also frequently used the ever-evolving On-U studio facilities to cut material for his own Century and RDL labels.

Bim Sherman - Haunting Ground Dub

An unreleased gem from the On-U archives that features on the forthcoming 'Sherwood At The Controls Volume 2: 1985 - 1990' compilation.

Brought together through the efforts of BBC Radio DJ Steve 'On The Wire' Barker, the sessions that birthed this track saw Adrian work with one of his heroes and big influences for the first time. Working alongside Style Scott and Dub Syndicate, they cooked up a fresh batch of rhythms for the Upsetter to voice, resulting in the critically acclaimed Time Boom X De Devil Dead LP which came out on On-U Sound in 1987. This alternate mix of the track "Music & Science Lovers" is heard here for the first time.

“Snatch A Style” is a short, previously unreleased bridging track, that can be found on the new 'Sherwood At The Controls Vol 2: 1985 - 1990' compilation. A small snippet of rhythm found on one of the many decaying quarter-inch reels in the label’s vaults that are currently being lovingly transferred and restored to life by DJ and On-U archivist Patrick Dokter. Most likely caught on tape whilst warming up for another session, in less than a minute it ably shows off the killer chops of Roots Radics and Dub Syndicate mainman, Lincoln Valentine ‘Style’ Scott. Tragically, Scott was gunned down at his home in Jamaica in 2014 - an incomprehensible act of brutality and a huge waste of musical talent.
