Having wowed tastemakers across the board with her debut album, “Barefoot In Your Kitchen”, in 2012 (Gilles Peterson made it his Album of the Week a year ago) saucy songstress and culinary linguist Bev Lee Harling returns with a one-off single covering one of her favourite songs of all time.

The Peggy Lee classic, “Why Don’t You Do Right?”, was recorded by many artists in the 1950’s and 60’s, including Della Reese, whose version provided the inspiration for this take, but seemed to have become a bit of a forgotten gem for contemporary recording artists, until now that is.

This limited edition 7-inch release features a pair of cracking mixes from two of Europe’s finest production outfits with an ear for a classic tune and a touch of jazz.

Italy’s Suonho has found fame recently with his tasteful edits, on-point remixes and his recent re-versions of Brazilian classics. Here he takes Bev’s interpretation to the dance floor with a bass heavy four-to-the-floor mix that will please jazz and house heads alike.

On the flip, our very own Colman Brothers are back, adding a little of their trademark ‘Cha Cha’ magic to Bev’s sassy vocals, and creating a mid-tempo shuffler that should please fans of both them and the lady herself!

The original vocal version is also available via an accompanying digital package, and should help stave off the hunger for more Bev Lee Harling material until her new album drops in early 2014.

Deetron is on a roll. Fresh off his Out Of My Head single with remixes from Kink and George Fitzgerald he has a new EP ready. “Character” is techno as you can expect it from our Swiss friend; deep but uplifting, refined but powerful. The track comes in two different versions, with the ‘Beats’ version being more stripped down obviously. “Can’t Love You More” on the flip drives on a catchy vocal and goes more toward the (deep) house spectrum, but with a punchy kick to keep that dancefloor going. Class A material as always from Deetron – watch out for his new album later this year.

On moving to Canada from his original home of Haïti, pianist and singer/songwriter Henri-Pierre Noel brought with him much of the tropical island’s influences. Henri is an incredibly versatile musican who uses the piano in a very percussive and syncopated way, almost like a drum. This particular technique naturally brings disco and afro-jazz elements into his unique brand of “Kompa Funk”. 

In 2012, Wah Wah 45s re-mastered and re-issued Henri-Pierre Noel’s debut LP from 1979, “Piano”, to huge critical acclaim. Whilst doing so, Canadian producer Moonstarr discovered a couple of previously unreleased cuts recorded in the same session way back when. Henri-Pierre Noel’s versions of the the Walter Murphy disco classic “A Fifth Of Beethoven” and the soul/jazz standard “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” are fire for the dance floor filled to the brim with the man’s tradmark keys, funky bass and afro flavoured percussion.

These exclusive recordings are sure to start many a party this summer, and set the scene perfectly for Henri’s UK visit this July – the highlight surely being a full London show at The Jazz Cafe on Saturday July 13th!
