"For the second installment in their 12” series Music From Memory present two deeply forward thinking electronic tracks from British musician Michal Turtle made between 1983-4.

The first track ‘Are you Psychic?’ is taken from Turtle’s obscure ‘Music From The Living Room’ album which Michal recorded literally in the living room of his family’s South London house at the young age of 22.

Over-running his parents' front room with various synthesizers, amps and instruments, and setting up a portable four track studio the ‘Music From The Living Room’ tracks were built around live jams that took place alone or sometimes with musicians he would invite to play alongside him. Whilst seemingly sample based the instruments were played live and any voices or sound effects were actually recorded directly to tape, or put onto tiny 2.5 second cassette loops.

‘Astral Decoy’ was made in the year following the release of his only solo LP and forms part of a series of unreleased tracks that reflect a growing interest in combining electronics with more analogue elements such as Xylophone and live percussion. At the same time this track draws inspiration from the sound of electro and boogie which Michal had become greatly interested in at the time, and in particular the work of musicians such as Grandmaster Flash.

With access to the archives of the many recordings made at his family home, this 12” serves as an introduction to a wider compilation of Michal Turtles works which is to follow on Music From Memory."

NOTS have announced details of the release of their second album. Cosmetic is released on Heavenly Recordings on Friday 9th September, and the band have shared new single, 'Entertain Me'. Lead vocalist / guitarist Natalie Hoffman says of the track:

"“Entertain Me” is a song in a constant state of movement and deterioration around one central, repeating part. No two live versions of it sound the same. Drawing influences from experimental no wave, postpunk, and psychedelic music, “Entertain Me” takes its cues from the edges of genres, where one begins to blend into another, and nothing is easily classified. The lyrics reflect the cyclical, distorted nature of the song, addressing different facets of the grotesque horror show going on in American politics and how they are portrayed- the rise of Trump, the reality-TV-like nature of American news, the almost-forced compliance of the viewer, and the for-profit-constructed “right” of the viewer, the consumer, to require constant entertainment in order to participate, and to live."

Recorded with Keith Cooper and Andrew McCalla in the band’s home-town of Memphis, the album also features artwork by Hoffman.

Nots are still a wild guitar band, but above and below the guitar, bass and drum pound, Alexandra Eastburn's analog synth blurps melodies and nonsense, teasing squiggles of freedom which defy the false grid of modern life.

With Hoffmann on guitar & vocals, Eastburn on synth, Charlotte Watson beating drums, and Meredith Lones steering a solid path through the chaos on bass, Nots are neither content with the smug "stare at your shoes" approach of bands from both coasts, nor an Earth-hugging "we need to get back to nature" hippie copout. There might not be any answers here. That might be the point. Nots have arrived at the next level of their attack with a confidence and a music that lays waste to the wasteland without romantic attachment to a thing.

Signed to legendary Memphis rock ‘n’ roll label Goner in the U.S. Cosmetic follows the U.K. release of We Are Nots, their debut album, on Heavenly in November of last year.

Having played a short run of UK dates earlier this year, including a sold-out show at London’s Lexington and a brace of acclaimed performances at the Great Escape, the band are set to bring their ferociously urgent live show back to the UK later this year.

Marcos Valle burst onto the Brazilian music scene half a century ago as part, or to be more exact, the leader of the second wave of bossa nova songwriters and arrangers. Unlike a lot of his contemporaries, Valle refused to be stuck with the “bossa nova” tag, managing to reinvent his sound several times throughout the course of his carreer.

In the mix below I tried to capture the various music chapters of this illustrious career, from the samba and bossa days of the sixties, the psychedelic soul and jazz fusion of the seventies, boogie and disco in the eighties, and finally to his work in the 2000s for the legendary brazil-centric Far Out Recordings. At 72, Valle’s still as lively as ever, continuing to record and tour, so if you get a chance don’t miss out on the opportunity to catch a performance of a living legend of brazilian music.

Beginning in the south, the Bruce Trail hugs the ancient shoreline of Lake Iroquoia as it follows the edge of the Niagara Escarpment. The Path, over its lengthy journey, winds its way through a landscape of natural beauty as it moves up to central Ontario. 
As the Trail leads further into the depths of the woodland and Ravine, sunlight falls through layers of evergreen branches stamping intricate patterns on the forest floor. Continuing north, the Trail passes an array of plants and wildlife native to the historic forest. Vivid colours saturate the forest canopy, complimented by the sounds of the cascading waterfall echoing through the Ravine. In the distance a carpet of gently waving fern cover the rolling hills dotted with slow-growing centuries-old coniferous trees that reach towards the sun.
At the home stretch of the escarpment you will be offered stunning views of the Peninsula, with the calm blue water of the western end of Lake Ontario reaching out to the lush greens of the temperate rainforest. This is the journey of the Bruce Trail.

Mystica Tribe is the musical alias of Tokyo-based producer, Taka Noda. Drawing on a wide range of influences – from dub, soul, bass music, rhythm and blues – Mystica Tribe has quickly been developing a very distinctive sound that exists in a weird, freaked out zone between dub and techno. Noda is especially interested in deep, psychedelic music, and this is reflected in his productions, which are equally suited for late night listening sessions or bent, broken in dancefloors. His first track, “Meditation Stick”, was released in 2011 on Dutch label SD Records, backed by two remixes from label owners Syncom Data. This was followed by two more EPs on SD Records in 2013: “Stars are Mine” and “Flowers”. Artists like Gilles Peterson and 2562 have supported these well-received releases, and his track “His Temple” recently appeared on Pangaea’s Fabric Live 73 mix CD. In 2014, Noda is launching his own label, Mystica Tribe Records, through which he plans to continue developing his uniquely psychedelic take on dub and techno. His recent EP, “Lizard”, was released on his label in 2014. “Jade Eye” was released on his label in 2016.

Wow! Something very special for R$N readers in the form of an exclusive (no free) remix download of TOY’s ‘Clock Chime’ the b side to current single ‘Left Myself Behind’.  It’s been shown some ‘Love From Outer Space’ by the Hardway Brothers with their Outer Space Dub reworking.

TOY look set to be one of the bands of the year... and we're only just into February. R$N saw them support the Horrors back in December and we were blown away by the power of their sound in The Roundhouse.  They finish their month long residency at the Shacklewell Arms on Friday. Don't miss. Probably your last chance to see them in such intimate surroundings.

Expect to hear the track getting a full P.A airing at one of the ‘A Love From Outer Space’ nights next week.

Sean Johnston needs little introduction to R$N readers. Great things already this year from Love From Outer Space traveller in the form of recent Mania Theme, already championed on these very pages. 

TOY is a Korg Delta led five-piece formed in 2010. It consists of Tom Dougall (Vox/Guitars), Dominic O’Dair (Guitars), Maxim Barron (Bass/Vox), Alejandra Diez (Synthesizers/Modulation) and Charlie Salvidge (Drums/Vox). TOY’s musical influences incorporate a wide range of genres including punk, psychedelia, krautrock, post rock to name a few and they explore experimental recording techniques in the studio.

With the majority of 2010 spent writing, TOY played their first show at the Cave Club in Islington earlier this year. Since then the band have played a string of live performances including Field Day and 1234 festivals and have supported bands such as The Horrors and The Pretty Things. Hardway Bros
Sean Johnston has been DJ'ing since his formative years in the frozen
North. Acid House Veteran, Techno Survivor, Hardway Bros, Beard Scientist
and Freelance Disco Consultant he has played at many of London's landmark
clubs from Sabre Sonic to Disco Bloodbath and was one of the founding
residents at London super-club Cable. He also plays regularly at up and
coming Berlin venue Salon Zur Wilden Renate.

Alongside Andrew Weatherall he runs and DJ's at A Love From Outer Space, a
cult monthly residency at The Drop in North London and The Berkeley Suite
in Glasgow, which has won plaudits as one of the country's best mid-week
clubs. Such is the night's popularity the pair have taken ALFOS to clubs
and festivals throughout Europe. An oasis of slow in a world of increasing
velocity, the club's manifesto is to never knowingly exceed 122bpm and is
home to a multitude of genres including ambient, balearic, dub, krautrock,
post punk, proto house, un-disco and other curiosities from the pair's
extensive record collections

Sean's productions, alongside fellow Hardway Bros, Jake Davies and a
mysterious South Londoner known only as Rico have graced such forward
thinking labels as Beard Science, Aniligital, History Clock, Astrolab, Luna
Flicks, I'm A Cliche and Is It Balearic?
