This is music for wet Sunday afternoons where one delicious, ennui-tinged hour drifts and meanders and merges into another, for bright Thursday evenings spent watching popinjays promenading down the high street, for late night coffee-fuelled insomnia.

A deluge of critical hype -- and a cool name -- couldn't convince music fans that the Jack Rubies were doing anything original. Formed in London, England, in 1987, the Jack Rubies consisted of vocalist Ian Wright, guitarist Stephen D. Ineson, bassist Steve Brockway, and percussionist Lawrence Giltnane. Wright and Ineson were also the group's songwriters. Not in synch with the dance flavors of late-'80s British rock, the Jack Rubies produced derivative jangle pop with biting lyrics that hooked U.S. college radio. The haywire drums and sinister vocals of "Be With You" immediately landed on left-of-the-dial stations in 1988; the video for it also became a favorite of MTV's 120 Minutes. The band also released their debut album, Fascinatin' Vacation, that year. The group toured with They Might Be Giants and Modern English, and their second LP, See the Money in My Smile, appeared in 1990. In the mid-'90s, Ineson left the band to start the Milagro Saints in New York City with Joyce Bowden (clarinet, percussion, vocals, lap steel guitar) and Lee Kirby (piano, organ, harmonica), eventually relocating to Raleigh, NC. The Jack Rubies then switched their appellation to the Screaming Windsors, replacing Giltnane with Martin Owens of Speedball Baby.

Influenced by the catchy simple sound of the early Beatles as well as that of Blondie,[1] the band created melodic, hook-driven, short-duration singles. They were considered part of the short lived "Blonde" movement (indie rock band fronted by blonde female singer with all other members being dark-haired males) along with the likes of The Primitives and Transvision Vamp, but also referenced the C86 scene of a few years earlier

In 1980, Caroline Crawley and Jemaur Tayle met in Bournemouth, England, where they discovered a mutual appreciation of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.[1] Two years later, after taking the name Shelleyan Orphan from the Shelley poem "Spirit Of Solitude", the pair moved to London to seek out orchestral elements to add to their voices.[1]

In June 1984, the band got their first break and landed a session with David Jensen for BBC Radio 1. The band signed with Rough Trade Records in 1986 and released the singles, "Cavalry of Cloud" and "Anatomy of Love".[1]

In 1987, the band released their first of three albums: Helleborine.[1] Named after the Helleborine orchid said to have the power to cure madness, the album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with producer Haydn Bendall. Helleborine included an assortment of guest musicians including Stuart Elliott (the drummer for Kate Bush), and Kate's brother Paddy Bush.

In 1989, they released Century Flower.[1] So called after a flower that blooms only once in its lifetime, this album was intended to mark "an event which affects enormous change, maybe once in a century: on a world scale, the atomic bomb: on a personal level, the death of someone close to you".[citation needed] Produced by David M. Allen, the band's sound caught the ear of The Cure's Robert Smith, who invited the band to accompany them on their Disintegration Tour. While on the Disintegration tour, Caroline Crawley began a relationship with Cure drummer Boris Williams.

It's been nearly two years since Shelflife has had the pleasure of putting out new music from the eternal Close Lobsters, and we're proud to say that this will be changing shortly. On June 2, we are extremely excited to be releasing the Scottish band's new EP featuring "Under London Skies" b/w "Wander Epic Part II" on limited gold 7" vinyl with download and digital formats. 

These self-proclaimed "Post-Neo-Anti-Close Lobsters" are back in a big way, and with these two tracks you'll be quickly convinced of that. The A-side, "Under London Skies," serves as both a lament and ode for London- the radical London of The Clash, the Rock London of The Only Ones and Flesh for Lulu, and the Libertarian London of The Mob and the June Brides. There's a lot of history (both musical and otherwise) tied closely with London, and if any band is gonna do justice to that fact it's undoubtedly our trusted Close Lobsters. If that sounds like a big subject to tackle, the single's B-side "Wander Epic Part II" will make you think again. Calling the song an epic is no exaggeration; the band has described it as a yearning for the vast and endless sea. The song is both a wanderlust and a pilgrimage, designed to take the listener on a journey as huge as the subject matter they're tackling. 

The release will be available on 70 gram limited edition 7" vinyl with download coupon that includes bonus tracks "Wander Epic Parts I & II" and "Wander Epic Part III". Early presale copies will be available on gold colored vinyl. There will also be a digital-only version that includes an exclusive bonus mix of "Under London Skies."

Kinloch (sounds like "kin-law") Nelson (b. 1950) studied classical guitar privately with Stanley Watson in Rochester NY, jazz guitar with Gene Bertoncini at Eastman School of Music, and music theory at the University of Rochester. In 1973, he began teaching both privately and at The Hochstein Music School in Rochester where he was on the faculty for twenty-five years. In 1985, Nelson co-founded the Guitar Society of Rochester, which during its ten-year run presented many of the world's greatest guitarists. Nelson is the author of a book, Alternate Guitar Tunings. He currently teaches privately, conducts guitar workshops and maintains a performance schedule.

Nelson came to the attention of Tompkins Square via Duck Baker, who visited Rochester in 2018 supporting his own Tompkins Square archival release, Les Blues Du Richmond : Demos & Outtakes, 1973-1979.
