After 15 years of writing, producing, and performing some of the most influential sounds in the Los Angeles underground funky soul scene, Miles “Music Man” Tackett is releasing his most personal, guitar-centric & soulful album yet -The Fool Who Wonders. 

Tackett’s musical reputation extends well beyond the underground clubs of Los Angeles. He has performed and collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Macy Gray, Damien Marley & Nas,  Blind Melon, B.B. King, Little Feat, and legendary soul singer Syl Johnson. 

After years of focusing on Breakestra Tackett has finally taken some time to reflect, write new songs and return to his first love, the electric guitar. With an array of influences that draw from vintage soul, rhythm and blues, psychedelia, and blues/jazz influenced folk and rock, The Fool Who Wonders’ new vintage sounds bring Tackett's varied musical travels back to where it all began.

Always a city synonymous with its music scene, Bristol is setting the standard for many to follow these days, be it with the finely curated house and techno of Idle Hands, the seismic soundsystem manipulations of Livity Sound, abstract electronics of Young Echo and the No Corner label or the more reverential bassweight approach of Peng Sound. There’s a communal spirit linking these various institutions which is as apparent from the outside as it is when you spend some time speaking to those fully entrenched in the city.

It’s telling that Jacob Martin has managed to successfully find a niche for himself within Bristol both as part of Outboxx, the classicist house project with Matthew Lambert, and in a solo capacity as Hodge. His work in this latter capacity has really come on in strides for over the course of the past year or so, cultivating a murky, dark style of sub focused house and techno which has increased in impact with every release. Last year saw his profile raised considerably thanks to some strange, bass-heavy house hybrids made in collaboration with Peverelist, and a further solo release on Punch Drunk which contained two pieces of clattering, low end-fuelled techno. A subsequent debut for Livity Sound sister label Dnous Ytivil made perfect sense and featured perhaps our favourite Hodge production so far in the devastating dancefloor tool “Amor Fati”.

It’s been a good few months since we last caught the mood of Bristol in our podcast series, so it felt right to ask for a mix from Hodge, whose subsequent 50 minute set is filled with unreleased and forthcoming material from himself and contemporaries such as Beneath, Addison Groove, Tessela, Batu, Facta and Rhythmic Theory. In the days leading up to publication it was revealed Hodge would be gracing Berceuse Heroique with some music, and his plans for the future are among the questions he was kind enough to answer.

EX by Plastikman 

Plastikman, aka @RichieHawtin, recorded EX at the Guggenheim, New York’s iconic art museum. This very special performance was at the invitation of influential Belgium fashion designer and artistic director at Dior, Raf Simons, for the Guggenheim’s annual fundraiser, performed around a specially constructed LED obelisk.

Richie Hawtin explains, “I knew that Raf was a long time Plastikman fan so by accepting his offer to perform at the Dior event at the Guggenheim I knew I’d set myself up to a huge challenge. Although Raf was happy to have the already complete Plastikman Live 1.5 show, I locked myself away in a series of intense studio sessions and quickly recorded enough new material for the performance and realized I might also have enough for a complete new album. The music came out of me effortlessly as I was very inspired by the opportunity to play in this beautiful architectural space renowned more for art than music. The location also allowed me to step far away from the dancefloor, giving me a huge amount of freedom to EXplore any sonic ideas that I had. Art, music, architecture, painting, sculpture – these mediums are supposed to live together.”

Recorded at John’s last night at The Vagabond Nightclub in Downtown Miami during this year’s Miami Music Week, ‘LIVE IN MIAMI’ features 37 tracks and nearly 4 hours of the very best underground electronic music, spanning across more than two decades.  

Showcasing a wide selection of new and classic records ranging from as far back as 1992 (Secret Knowledge – Sugar Daddy) and 1993 (Nicole – A Small Entrance To A Large Spectrum and Laurent Garnier – Acid Eiffel) Digweed’s latest opus effortlessly takes us through a vast array of sounds, eras and genres from what was an incredibly special night back in March of this year.

 From some major reminiscent acid moments of the early 90s right through the years to the upfront house and techno soundscapes of present day, John Digweed blends tracks from some of the most notable producers into one seamless mix that truly captures the spontaneity and vibe of the crowd in one of the world’s coolest, most intimate and unorthodox clubbing destinations.

This is a shorter radio edit of the remix featured on the 12 'Underpass' 12 inch which is released by Metamatic Records on 27 May, 2013. The full remix on the vinyl edition is over six minutes. Hand-stamped and numbered by designer Jonathan Barnbrook, the single is limited to 530 copies - only 500 of which will go on sale. The 12 inch also features the nine minute Oh The Hilt Mix of 'Underpass' by John Doran and John Tatlock.
