Like I said in the thread, the instrumentation of this is awesome. I love the contrast they all have to each other, especially on top of the drum machine. Followed.

My recordings with contact microphones and electromagnetic pickups started being systematic in an attempt to explore every aspect of my environment and the city of London. After this first contact with these devices I took a different and more technical approach, trying to improve both the piezo transducers and the magnetic pickups. In an attempt to reach hidden sources of sounds I started coating my piezos with layers of plastic, turning them into primitive hydrophones. This drove my exploration of London and made me focus on places where water in all its states could be found (such as the river, a swimming pool, a pond, a freezer or a boiling kettle). The magnetic pickups have revealed a wide array of complex sounds formed of beeps, hiss, drones and pulses where harmony is often hard to find. However the underground and the DLR have proven to be a good source for harmonic sounds, specially while recording trains passing by from the platform.

  I have composed this piece with sounds obtained from the Thames because of the challenge such recordings have involved. These were all done on different days in Southwark's "beach" with different techniques. To obtain underwater recordings the plastic coated contact mics have been buried in the sand, placed under rocks, placed inside available objects and placed directly on the area where water gets in contact with the sand (or the mud). To obtain the more metallic water sounds the piezos were attached with tape or bluetack to metal handrails and pipes.

  As soon as I started recording in the so called beach, my vision of the river changed radically. Beforehand I considered it dead and nearly stagnant but the direct contact made me realize that the river can be considered as a living creature in a metaphorical way. I started thinking of the debris, waste, dirt and lost objects as its organs and extremities, the pigeons and crows as friendly collaborators, the tide cycle as it's sleep-wake pattern (curiously similar to a normal human cycle). The learning curve I had to go through to improve my recordings could be thought of as the time and effort it takes to make a creature have the slightest trust in you.
 
  My composition evokes the idea of constant collision; There is an everlasting competition between water, earth, debris and animals for the same space, a space that is scarce and permanently occupied. The microphones are intruders and as such they struggle to find a place of their own, each wave makes them more vulnerable and each rock threatens to break them apart. In the end we receive a gift from the river, in this case an object that can provide shelter: an empty fuel container, half buried in the sand, heavy enough to resist even the most violent wave. The river accepts the microphones for a short while, they can now focus on their unique purpose: to be part of the stream, to be one with the river.
