In the classical margam of bharatanatyam, the varnam is the recital’s centerpiece, its longest and most emotionally charged performance. In “Tome of Stars”, the varnam appears as the twenty-nine-poem section “Senescence”. Following the exaltation of Anthesis, the beloved as a celestial goddess, love now descends from the stars into the gravity of human frailty. 

This sonnet reflects on the crafting of a Siyotanka, a Native American courting flute, as both a physical object and a vessel of personal and spiritual expression. Beginning with a fallen sycamore, the poem traces the transformation of natural material into a sacred musical instrument intended to carry a song for the beloved to the heavens. The act of creation becomes metaphorical as well, representing the poet’s devotion, the sacredness of their relationship, and the longing to elevate the beloved’s essence into something transcendent and eternal. The verse moves from death and decay (a fallen tree) to divine attention (cosmic stillness at the sound of her name), forming a full arc from earth to sky.

The poet has, in fact, made such flutes, and decades earlier gifted one to the woman who is the muse of “Tome of Stars”. The act of carving sound from what was once inert matter mirrors the deeper ambition of the entire sequence: to transmute memory, longing, and loss into something that endures, something capable of resonance beyond the self. In this, Siyotanka becomes both instrument and symbol, an offering of breath, art, and spirit across the silence.

Through seasoned wood, a channel straight is minedTo form its beating heart—a passage new.A cylinder awaits a breath divine,From cutting edge and totem, mated true.

Six portals to the womb of sound are placed,Precision-pierced, birth notes in melody.A bridge from mortal strife to heaven’s grace,Her raga, writ in runic harmony.

Sweet Stargirl’s name shall sing in psalms so dear,The stars themselves shall cease their dance to hear.
