I tried to imagine what John Wayne might say, had he still been alive today………

You know...

(pause)

I've played a lot of soldiers in my time. Marines, cavalry officers, Green Berets. But I never confused what I did on a movie set... with what the real heroes did on real battlefields.

(slight pause)

The difference between me and them?

When the director yelled "cut," I went home to a warm bed and a hot meal. When the shooting stopped for them... some of their buddies didn't go home at all.

(longer pause, voice deepens)

Now, I'm gonna tell you something, and I want you to listen good.

This country of ours... this America... she wasn't built by politicians making speeches or folks sitting around complaining. She was built by men and women who stood up when it mattered. Who said "I'll go" when everyone else said "somebody should do something."

(voice firms up)

From Bunker Hill to Baghdad... from the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of Afghanistan... American veterans have written our nation's story in blood, sweat, and tears. And they didn't do it for glory. They didn't do it for parades or medals, though God knows they earned every one.

They did it because when their country called... they answered.

(reflective tone)

I see these young men and women coming back now. Some of 'em are whole, some of 'em aren't. Some carry scars you can see, others carry scars buried so deep that only the good Lord knows they're there.

And you know what really gets me?

(voice tightens with emotion)

Some of them come home and they can't find work. They're sleeping on the streets. They're struggling to put food on the table for their families. That's not right. That's not the American way.

(pause, voice strengthens with conviction)

These men and women signed a blank check... payable to the United States of America... for an amount up to and including their lives.

The least... the very LEAST we can do... is honor that check when they come home.

(slower, more emphatic)

I don't care if you agreed with the war or not. I don't care about your politics. That soldier, that sailor, that airman, that Marine... they didn't make policy. They just did their duty. And they did it with honor.

(building intensity)

So here's what I'm asking you to do:

When you see a veteran, you shake their hand. You look 'em in the eye and you say "thank you." And you mean it.

You hire them. You help them. You stand with them. Because they stood for you when it counted.

You teach your children and your grandchildren that freedom isn't free. That the liberty we enjoy, the rights we take for granted... they were paid for by someone else's sacrifice.

(voice softens but remains firm)

And on Veterans Day... or any day, for that matter... you take a moment. Just a moment. And you remember.

Remember the ones who didn't come home.

Remember the ones who came home different.

Remember the families who sacrificed alongside them.

Remember that every generation of Americans has produced men and women willing to stand between us and the darkness.

(pause)

That's not just history, pilgrim. That's sacred trust.

(final thought, strong and clear)

I may have played a lot of tough guys in the movies. But the real tough guys? They're the ones who wore the uniform. They're the ones who served. They're the ones who sacrificed.

And as long as I draw breath, I will honor them.

America should too.

(long pause)
