Belfast-based, DSNT resident and owner of Computer Controlled Records, Nez has been one of my favourite DJ's on the planet for as long as I can remember.

Nóra Feryne: A real music freak, who has mixed her fave electro, idm and techno tracks since 2005. She is the former co-editor of Selection Sorted TechnoPodcast, has been a guest in many-many radioshows and podcasts, she has played in many clubs and festivals of Hungary(Kontra, wndrlnd, Corvintető, Müszi, Kuplung, R33, Egál,S.U.N festival,Ozora ect...) and also abroad, like Slovakia,Austria,Romania and France.She is currently based in Nijmegen(NL).
She is also program coordinator and resident at Open Source Radio in Nijmegen.

FERYNE / Mars Frequency Mix Series

Nez is a dj of all things techno/electro/acid/jungle and everything in between and has been djing regularly around the Irish underground electronic music scene since 1998. Refusing to be pigeonholed to anyone one scene has led Nez to sharing stages and warming up for the likes of Mala, Surgeon, Hudson Mowhawke, Kyle Hall, Supa DJ Dimitry from Deelite, DJ Deep, DJ Pete, Regis, Skream & Benga, Trevino, Marcel Dettmann, Trevino, Daniel Bell, Perc, Egyptian Lover, DJ Funk, Source Direct, Legowelt, Radioactive Man, Roy Davis Junior, Lil Louis, Blawan, Neil Landstrumm to name a small few. He's held down many residencies over the years and played around all around Europe which culminated in a Boiler Room set at AVA Festival in 2018. Currently he's running the Computer Controlled label and is part of the techno collective Coda.

Which artist has influenced you the most?  

- I'd have to say Dave Clarke.  He was the man that introduced me to so much great artists when I started getting into dance music.  From the banging European techno to Chicago house, deeper Detroit Techno and of course electro he was a major influence on my taste.  I still listen to both the Electro Boogie compilations regularly, two of the best electro mixes.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now? 

- Could be here all day listing people, the electro scene is healthier than ever at the mo, but off the top of my head people like Client 03, Sound Synthesis, iNFO, Ben Pest, DMX Krew, Moy, Umwelt, ERP, Serge Geyzel, Zeta Reticula and have all been releasing buy on sight records.

Strange But Dance Music #141: Nez

Time for my monthly delve into the depths of deep-space electro. Some beautiful brand new records from ReKab, Taupe and Innershades along with some not so new on labels such as Nebulae and Futhur Electronix. Electronic Convergence Mix - February 2024

In The Mix - The finest DJs from across the globe - and from every end of the genre spectrum – doing what they do best, sharing the music they love.

Steeped in old skool dance history - his extensive CV takes in illegal raves and pirate radio as well as running various record stores and five key labels – Jerome Hill is just about as longstanding and dedicated an ambassador for techno music that it’s possible to imagine.  In preparation for his  appearance at East London clubbing mecca The Cause’s multi room bonanza A Very Very Good Friday on March 29, he’s spun out a fantastic mix for our listening pleasure.

In The Mix: Jerome Hill

This podcast series was created to help define and broaden the Asphalt Records sound, ethos and sonic etiquette, and the latest installment of the series does just that, and masterfully so. Madrid based, but Zaragozan born, Rachael’s bio and online presence are so sparse, as prolific is her gigs list and podcast appearances, which leads us directly to a sole truth: in this age of pathologic egotistical behavior, hiper-self branding, and fake humbleness, she lets the technics do the talking, which is frankly refreshing to say the least. 
 
The artist has been storming the most underground and adventurous cabins since a good while now, imprinting her furious blend of high-bpm-breakbeats, sharp and banging drums, dystopian atmospheres and sci-fi melodies which conform now her sonic imprint, no matter the speed or style she is playing. Not only that, but she has been doing it the hard way, the way of the vinyl only, which in a present full of dj aids and compressed digital formats, makes her a music romantic on top of a hardened dj, such commitment saying a lot about her personality and activist dedication to a dying craft. 

Her mix for Asphalt is tribal, deep and mental, rich in percussive minimalism, with influences between autonomic heritage and with a modern take on the noir tech-steppism of Source Direct and Photek, and evolves into modern jungalist roughness and recent dread mutations, unto the fringes of the sonic experimentation: always pushing forward, always with a dark and twisted narrative edge, always embedded in the nuum’s chemical nightmares and paranoias. 

This mix in particular was thought after the effects of the technologic alienation provoked by digital devices, and as framing, here below is an alternative tracklist provided by Rachael herself, so throw your phone and turn on your speakers, it’s time for going back into the matrix.

DECENNIUM05 - Plant43 (Plant43 Recordings, CPU, Frustrated Funk)

For the 5th edition of our DECENNIUM series we bring you an artist recognised as a genius by the elite in the Electro world; our good friend Emile Facey aka Plant43. For 15 years he has regularly released on labels considered as royalty in the scene, which any Electro artist would dream of, such as Central Processing Unit, Frustrated Funk, Ai, Semantica, Cultivated Electronics, Shipwrec and TRUST. Now busy with his own label Plant43 Recordings, we are immensely grateful to Emile for taking the time to produce this well informed, masterclass of a DJ set, made exclusively for Natural Selection.

First inspired by Kraftwerk in the early 80′s Emile was hooked on Electro from an early age. In 1998 he got involved with promoting Electro events in London and soon after started writing music as Plant43. His first vinyl release came in 2006 on the much-missed Ai Records. Several 12’s and the well-received “Burning Decay” album in 2010, alongside other releases on Semantica Records, CPU, Frustrated Funk, TRUST, Shipwrec, AC Records (acidlab.de), Bleep43 Recordings and Cultivated Electronics have highlighted his singular and ambiguous style of sinewy Electro that draws deep from the influence of Drexciya. Emile is also a graphic designer and co-founder of bleep43.com, which is dedicated to promoting and reviewing electronic music. Since 2003, the London based Bleep43 parties have seen him play live alongside such acts as E.R.P., DJ Stingray, Surgeon, Regis, Objekt, Sync 24, Demdike Stare, DMX Krew and many more.

After being huge fans of Plant43 for many years, in 2019 we were finally able to relish the opportunity to book Emile to play a live set as part of our collaboration event with CPU Records at FOLD, amongst a lineup that included The Advent, E.R.P. aka Convextion, 96 Back, CPSmith and our residents Annie Hall, Kodah and Osc Kins. His set went down as one of the best live sets we have ever had the pleasure of witnessing and we were proud that this was produced at one of our events and heard by a packed venue on one of best club sound systems in the UK.

It is an absolute honour to have Emile on our series and we hope you enjoy listening to this set as much as we did.
