In the classical margam of bharatanatyam, the varnam is the recital’s centerpiece, its longest and most emotionally charged performance. In “Tome of Stars”, the varnam appears as the twenty-nine-poem section “Senescence”. Following the exaltation of Anthesis, the beloved as a celestial goddess, love now descends from the stars into the gravity of human frailty. 

This sonnet juxtaposes imagined fantasy with lived reality. It opens by reflecting on the poet’s later literary efforts to recast the relationship—transforming a hidden, stigmatized love into fictional narratives where characters could love freely, heroically, and across cosmic landscapes. These creative reimaginings stand in stark contrast to the actual circumstances of the relationship, which were shaped by societal pressures and personal guilt, rendering even their moments of physical closeness fraught and conflicted. The third quatrain shifts from these idealized stories to a specific, intense memory: a night of physical union not born of romantic triumph, but of mutual despair. Yet within that act, despite its surrounding sorrow and complexity, something briefly luminous was recovered. The final couplet captures this contradiction, memorializing a single morning of impossible brilliance, one that offered no resolution but nonetheless left a lasting impression amid the pain.

In later years, I would rewrite our tale,
Romanticize our shamed and hidden hearts.
In novels spanning space with star-crossed wails,
Our proxies honored love when torn apart.

They kissed on oceaned worlds that swam in seas
Of stars within the Magellanic Clouds,
That overlooked our brilliant galaxy, 
With night skies sketched in detonations proud.

But in the quiet breaths between our fears,
Where timeless truth sought freedom from its cage,
One night, your sadness shattered cautious years,
And passion overflowed upon life’s stage.

And nothing I might write could hope to frame,  
That morn you shone with starlight’s brightest flame.
