One of two pieces for cello and piano dedicated to Howard Pollock. In musical terms, a “lilt” is considered to be a spirited and usually cheerful song or tune, springy and buoyant in movement.

The fashion image accompanying this upload is of a Women's Kentucky Derby Church Wedding Noble Dress Hat. I found the image at ebay. My reason for selecting it is because I sensed a certain "lilt" to her look. Perhaps I should rename my piece "A Day At The Derby." 

About the performers:

Minah Choe (cello) was born in Seoul, Korea and began her studies at the age of 8. She graduated with Bachelor of Music with First Class of Honors from the Sydney Conservatorium where she was admitted whilst at high school and received scholarships throughout her studies. She was a full scholarship holder at the Australian National Academy of Music in 2002. In 2004 Minah received master's degree from the Indiana University Jacob’s School of Music under the guidance of Prof. Janos Starker and continued with doctoral degree as his teaching assistant at IU. Currently Minah is pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Sydney Conservatorium while working as a freelance cellist in major orchestras and performing widely in various chamber music concerts and recitals. ​Minah has appeared as a soloist with several orchestras including Sydney Symphony, Christchurch Symphony, Nizhny-Novgrod Philharmonic, Indiana Univeristy Philharmonic, Bloomington Camerata, Sydney Conservatorium Chamber, and Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic, the Beecroft orchestras, and Melbourne String Ensemble. Minah has won numerous awards including “Most Promising Performer” in 4th Adam International Cello Competition, Australian Postgraduate Award, inaugural Janos Starker Scholarship, Dorothy Fraser Scholarship and Australian University of Women Federation Commemorative Fellowship. ﻿Minah is passionate about teaching cello. She was a tutor at AYO Young Symphonists in 2010 and tutor at the Riverina Summer School for Strings in 2013. This year, Minah teaches at the Sydney Conservatorium and the Conservatorium High School and has commenced working as a Music Co-ordinator of the ​Australian Korean Classical Association.﻿Minah plays a cello by Joseph Hel (1869).

 

Jeanell Carrigan (piano) is presently an Associate Professor in Collaborative Piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. She has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and throughout Australia, and has recorded for the Bavarian Radio Corporation, the ABC and for regional stations in Australia on many occasions. She holds a Doctor of Creative Arts in the area of Australian post-1970 solo piano repertoire and in May, 2016 released her seventeenth solo compact disc of Australian piano music. She is passionate about promoting Australian Music particularly the piano music of Australian women composers. In a review of the CD A Little Variation, composer Houston Dunleavy said “This recording is one to add to the list of treasures of Australian music that seem to be growing by the year. Surely Jeanell Carrigan belongs in this category as well. Australian music has a great champion in Carrigan’s fine playing and scholarship. She deserves far wide recognition for the quality of her work.” (Music Trust 1/4/15)

Recorded in August/ September 2017 in Verbrugghen Hall at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

The piano was the Fazioli concert grand tuned and maintained by David Kinney.

A rare session recording of the late County Clare concertina player Paddy Murphy (1913 - 1992), recorded by John Knight In Ennis, on the 4th October 1972 (recovered from Tape_035/036 in January/April 2020). John's records don't specify who the box player is, but credit to them too for the excellent playing!

Some info on Paddy:
Paddy Murphy (who is regarded as a founding father of modern Irish concertina music) was born in the rural community of Fiach Roe in the musically rich heartland of west County Clare (Ireland). His music developed during a time of unprecedented change in Irish society. Emigration from the Irish countryside was reaching critical mass, but Murphy chose to remain at home on a mountainy farm. During the next fifty years, he would become one of the most celebrated concertina players in Ireland, responsible for developing a unique fingering system and for passing on his skills to a new and eager generation of teachers and performers.

In February 2013 we played 11 dates around Ireland to mark the re-emergence of the band. We had a fine old time in the process & recorded a few of the gigs along the way- here are a few live cuts from the concerts in Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin, Derry & McCarthy's, Dingle.

Track 118: The Four Provinces: The First of May (hornpipes)

This week's track come from a 78rpm disc recorded by the Four Provinces which included John McCormick on fiddle, Jacob Thomas on piccolo, and Edward Lee on piano. The tunes are listed as The First of May/Molly MacAlpine/Slieve Gorm. Molly MacAlpine seems to be a version of Poll Ha'Penny and Slieve Gorm is Boys of Bluehill.

Recorded in 1924 and released on the Vocalion label (14931). From the Ted McGraw Collection, McGraw 78 00-858.

The Four Provinces: The First of May (hornpipes)

The second you hear the ebb and flow of the music that emanates from David Munnelly’s accordion, you will be instantly convinced that this man was born with a button box in his hands. Hailing from Belmullet, a small town by the sea in Co. Mayo, Ireland, David has carried the strong musical tradition from his home and family across the world.

David is known for his colourful style which inhales bold bass fingerings, complex arrangements and modern compositions; and exhales hints of the Roaring 20′s and the energy of a box of dynamite coupled with a masterful knack for letting a tune take its own time for a completely unmistakeable and brilliant sound.

This unique style led David into the world of professional musicianship where early in his career he became a full-time member of Niamh Parsons’ band the Loose Connections. As his reputation grew in Irish trad circles, David quickly found himself recording and touring with some of the greatest Irish bands and musicians of the last century including The Chieftains, De Danann, Gerry O Connor, Arty McGlynn and Sharon Shannon.

After gaining ample experience and knowledge from his exceptional peers, David formed the David Munnelly Band in1999 and began a thirteen year journey with his own band touring Europe, America and Japan and recording four critically acclaimed CD’s.

Recently David has expanded his repertoire to mainland Europe where he is currently working on several new projects. Along with the most respected accordion players in Europe, David currently performs with the Accordion Samurai, who’s debut CD has won numerous high-profile awards. Additionally, David released  " t'is what it is"  a successful duo CD with fiddler Mick Conneely in 2012.
